LaOBr:Eu3+ nanofibers have been successfully fabricated by electrospinning combined with a double-crucible bromination technique using cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) powers as bromine source. The products were characterized in detail by X-ray diffractometry (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersion spectroscopy (EDS) and fluorescence spectroscopy. The results indicate that LaOBr:Eu3+ luminescent nanofibers are tetragonal in structure with space group P4/nmm. The diameter of LaOBr:Eu3+ luminescent nanofibers is ca. 150 nm. Fluorescence spectra analysis shows that under the excitation of 302-nm ultraviolet light, the LaOBr:Eu3+ nanofibers exhibit red emission centering at 620 nm, which is attributed to the 5D0→7F2 energy levels transitions of Eu3+ ions.

Rare earth metal complexes have special characteristics, such as extremely narrow emission bands and high internal quantum efficiencies, which are suitable to be used as the emission materials, chemistry and biological technology. Ternary nano complex of terbium gatifloxacin phenanthroline was synthesized. The composition and structure of ternary complex were characterized by element analysis, Mass Spectrometry (MS), UltraViolet Absorption Spectrometry (UV) and fluorescence spectra(FS). The influences of solubility, thermal stability and luminescent properties of complex as well as addition of phenanthroline secondary ligands on the fluorescence spectra of the ternary complexes were studied. The results of fluorescence spectra analysis showed that partial energy was transferred from Characterization to terbium ions by intramolecular energy transfer processes, meanwhile, the addition of phenanthroline can effectively increase the luminescence intensity of terbium icons. The complex possessed well luminescence and showed characteristic emission peaks of Tb3+ under UV light excitation and emitted strong green fluorescence. Moreover, in an ITO/PVK/Tb(GFLX)3Phen/Al device, Tb3+ ion can be excited by intramolecular ligand-to-metal energy transfer process. The main peak of emission at 545 nm is attributed to 5D0→7F2 transition of the Tb3+ ion, and this process results in the enhancing green emission. Biological actrivity properties of the rare earth complex was well studied.

In this communication, selected results obtained in the course of a 10-year Sino-Italian collaborative project are presented. During this collaboration, several studies on marine organisms collected in the South China Sea have been conducted, resulting in the characterization of a large number of novel natural products. The main interest has been focused on sponges, cnidarians, and molluscs. Here, the recent research, including some not yet published studies, on cnidarians and molluscs, in particular, opisthobranchs and pulmonates, will be briefly described. The study of cnidarians and pulmonates led to isolate molecules, in particular, biscembranoids and polypropionates, displaying carbon skeletons already described in previous papers. Our studies resulted in their complete structural characterization including the absolute stereochemistry that was clarified by coupling X-ray diffraction to circular dichroism (CD) spectra analysis. Some unique nitrogenous molecules containing either an isonitrile function or an 1,2,4-oxadiazole moiety, this latter found for the first time in a marine organism, as well as known sesterterpenoids and diterpenoids were isolated from opisthobranchs. Owing to their anatomical location, these metabolites should play a relevant role in the protection of the molluscs. Finally, a series of alkaloids structurally related to known anticancer agents were also characterized.

Nd:YAG nanopowder was prepared by urea co-precipitation method. XRD, TG-DTA, SEM and spectra analysis were utilized to study the properties of the powder. Results indicated that fine Nd:YAG nanopowder can be acquired at 1000°C for 10h. The fluorescence spectra shown that the strongest peak was located at 1061nm, corresponding to the 4F3/24I11/2 energy level transition of Nd3+ ion.
