Experimental investigation of the effects of compound angle holes on film cooling effectiveness and heat transfer performance using a transient liquid crystal thermometry technique

In gas turbine engines, film cooling holes are commonly fed with an internal crossflow, the magnitude of which has been shown to have a notable effect on film cooling effectiveness. In Part I of this study, as well as in a few previous studies, the magnitude of internal crossflow velocity was shown to have a substantial effect on film cooling effectiveness of axial shaped holes. There is, however, almost no data available in the literature that shows how internal crossflow affects compound angle shaped film cooling holes. In Part II, film cooling effectiveness, heat transfer coefficient augmentation, and discharge coefficients were measured for a single row of compound angle shaped film cooling holes fed by internal crossflow flowing both in-line and counter to the span-wise direction of coolant injection. The crossflow-to-mainstream velocity ratio was varied from 0.2–0.6 and the injection velocity ratio was varied from 0.2–1.7. It was found that increasing the magnitude of the crossflow velocity generally caused degradation of the film cooling effectiveness, especially for in-line crossflow. An analysis of jet characteristic parameters demonstrated the importance of crossflow effects relative to the effect of varying the film cooling injection rate. Heat transfer coefficient augmentation was found to be primarily dependent on injection rate, although for in-line crossflow, increasing crossflow velocity significantly increased augmentation for certain conditions.

Abstract The present paper reports on an experimental investigation on the aerodynamic and heat transfer performance of different platform cooling schemes: two based on cylindrical and shaped holes and one featuring a slot located upstream of the leading edge plane simulating the combustor to stator interface gap. Tests were run on a 6-vane cascade operated at an isentropic cascade exit Mach number of 0.4 and a significant inlet turbulence intensity level of about 9%. The cooling schemes were first tested to quantify their impact on secondary flows and related losses for variable injection conditions. Heat transfer performance was then assessed through adiabatic film cooling effectiveness and heat transfer coefficient measurements. The Net Heat Flux Reduction parameter was then computed to critically assess the cooling schemes. When compared with the cylindrical hole scheme, shaped holes outperform for all tested injection rates, while the slot alone is able to thermally protect only the front of the passage. Discrete holes are required to cool the platform region along the whole pressure side and the suction side leading edge region.

This paper describes the results of an experimental investigation into the effect of the mainstream flow history on the film cooling effectiveness and the heat transfer characteristics from the combination of one row of simple angle holes and one row of compound angle holes. The mainstream flow history includes: favorable pressure gradient factors in the range −1.11 × 10−6 to +1.11 × 10−6 and turbulence intensity in the range 0.3% to 4.7%. The presence of favorable pressure gradients in the flow reduces the film cooling protection of the surfaces from both compound angle holes or combination of simple and compound angle holes, while the presence of adverse pressure gradients increases the film cooling effectiveness at low blowing rate and decreases it at high blowing rate. Increasing the turbulence intensity reduces the film cooling effectiveness from compound angle holes or combination of simple and compound angle holes.

An efficient steady-state wide band liquid crystal technique is used to study the film cooling performance of a variety of geometries in a flat plate: a single row of holes, a double row of holes (both in-line and staggered), and a single cooling hole. This method allows temperature information to be captured in one image, without the difficulty involved in a transient experiment. The streamwise inclinations tested are 30°, 60°, and 90°. The freestream is maintained at 13m/s, and at ambient temperature. The range of blowing ratios varied from 0.33 to 2.0. Both heat transfer coefficient and adiabatic cooling effectiveness are measured for all the cases. Air is used to produce a density ratio near unity. From the range of blowing ratios tested, the most effective film cooling is achieved at a value close to 0.5, for near unity density ratio. It has been revealed that film cooling effectiveness is improved when the jet remains attached to the surface, however, this is generally coupled with an augmentation in heat transfer owing to the disturbance the attached jet causes to the boundary layer. The 30° inclined holes show to be the most effective. Results demonstrate the full coverage capability of liquid crystal thermography.

Detailed surface measurements of the heat transfer coefficient and the film cooling effectiveness by application of the transient liquid crystal method were carried out on a heavily film cooled nozzle guide vane (NGV) in a linear cascade wind tunnel at the EPFL as part of the European Research Project TATEF2 (Turbine Aero-Thermal External Flows 2). The external cooling setup included a showerhead cooling scheme and suction and pressure side of the airfoil several rows of fan-shaped cooling holes. By testing two different cooling flow rates at a NGV exit Reynolds number of 1.46E+06, detailed aerodynamic and heat transfer measurement data were obtained that can be used for validation of numerical codes and design tools for cooled airfoils. The data include the NGV surface static pressure distribution and wall heat transfer and film cooling effectiveness obtained by application of the transient liquid crystal technique. An engine representative density ratio between the coolant and the external hot gas flow was achieved by using CO2 as coolant gas. For the coupled simulation of internal cooling and external flow the numerical model was composed of the cooling air feeding the internal plenum, the cooling holes, and the outer external flow domain. An unstructured mesh was generated for the simulations by applying two different commercial CFD codes (Fluent and CFX). Identical boundary conditions were chosen in order to allow for a direct comparison of both codes. The computations were carried in two ways, first using a built-in transition model and second by imposing fully turbulent flow starting at the leading edge. For both codes the same built-in turbulence models were applied. The computations were set up to solve for the aerodynamic flow quantities both within and around the test model and for the thermal quantities on the vane surface, i.e. heat transfer coefficient and film cooling effectiveness. The computational results from the two codes are compared and validated against the results from the experiments. The numerical results were able to confirm a suspicion that the cross flow in the feeding plenum causes an observed non-symmetry of the measured film cooling effectiveness at the outlet of some cooling holes.

Abstract The laminated cooling configuration can effectively enhance heat transfer and improve cooling effectiveness through combining the advantage of impingement cooling, film cooling and pin fin cooling. In this study, four laminated configurations with different pin shape including circular pin shape, curved rib pin shape, droplet pin shape and reverse droplet pin shape are numerically investigated. Extensive analysis are conducted within the blowing ratio range of 0.2–1.8 to reveal the influence of pin shape on heat transfer characteristics and cooling performance. Compared with circular pin shape, other three pin shapes can enable more complex internal flow field, which greatly affect the heat transfer performance. Among these shapes, the droplet pin shape presents the best capacity on improving heat transfer performance and distribution due to its stramlined shape and little upstream surface, especially at relatively high blowing ratio and the augmentation can be up to 7.91% under the blowing ratio of 1.7. Besides, results show that the cooling effectiveness can be enhanced by adopting curved rib pin shape and the enhancement monotonously increases as the blowing ratio increases. When blowing ratio is 1.7, the improvement can be 2.7%. The reason is that the large lateral blockage decreases the exhausted velocity and hence forms relative firm film coverage.

In order to explore the effect of blowing ratio on film cooling over a convex surface, the present study adopts the transient liquid crystal thermography for the film cooling measurement on a straight circular hole configuration. The test piece has a strength of curvature(2r/D)of 92.5, pitch to diameter ratio(P/D)of 3 and streamwise injection angle(γ)of35∘All measurements were conducted under the mainstream Reynolds number(Red)of 1700 with turbulence intensity(Tu)of 3.8%, and the density ratio between coolant and mainstream(ρc/ρm)is 0.98. In current study, the effect of blowing ratio(M)on film cooling performance is investigated by varying the range of blowing ratio from 0.5 to 2.0. Two transient tests of different injection flow temperature were conducted to obtain both detailed heat transfer coefficient and film cooling effectiveness distributions of measured region. The present measured results show that both the spanwise averaged heat transfer coefficient and film cooling effectiveness increase with decreased blowing ratio.

The transient liquid crystal technique has been used to measure film cooling effectiveness and heat transfer on a flat plate in a free jet, and a turbine airfoil in a linear cascade. A multiple-test regression method has been developed for the data reduction, considering a transient coolant temperature evolution. Flat plate film cooling was investigated for a single row of 35° inclined holes at Mach numbers of 0.3 and 0.5, and two turbulence intensities. Downstream of injection heat transfer was increased in-between the holes due to enhanced turbulence caused by the shearing of the coolant and the mainstream. At higher turbulence intensity the range of blowing ratios was broader as lift-off was delayed. Rim cooling measurements on the airfoil were conducted at engine-representative flow conditions. A maximum effectiveness of 0.3 behind injection was observed on the suction side, with slightly higher values for a double row in comparison to a single row configuration. Due to a high coolant momentum, the effectiveness on the pressure side was very low at about 0.05 for a single row configuration.

Results of an experimental investigation of film cooling and heat transfer following injection through two staggered rows of holes are reported. The two staggered rows are considerably more effective in protecting the wall than a single row. The film cooling effectiveness at locations beyond about 30-hole dia downstream of injection is laterally uniform. The heat transfer coefficient is within a few percent of that without injection at low blowing rates, but it increases rapidly as the blowing rate increases above unity.

Several steady state measurement techniques are used to measure the film cooling effectiveness on a flat plate. Pressure sensitive paint (PSP), temperature sensitive paint (TSP), and infrared (IR) thermography are used to measure the film cooling effectiveness. To compare these measurement techniques, a single row of cylindrical holes, with a compound angle, are used. Seven holes (D = 4 mm) are equally spaced 12 mm apart, and the hole length-to-diameter ratio is 9.92. The axial angle (θ) of the holes is 30°, and the compound angle (β) is 45°. In addition to evaluating the various measurement techniques the effect of the coolant blowing ratio is considered; effectiveness measurements are taken for blowing ratios, M, of 0.4, 0.6, 1.2, and 1.8. The effect of mainstream turbulence intensity is considered with the addition of a turbulence grid to the low speed wind tunnel. Of the three steady state measurement techniques considered in this study, PSP demonstrates the most promise for the measurement of the film cooling effectiveness. Because PSP is a mass transfer technique, film effectiveness measurements can be readily obtained near the film cooling holes. Although the heat transfer techniques of TSP and IR thermography are more desirable than traditional thermocouples or liquid crystal thermography, the applicability of measurements near the holes is questionable due to conduction problems associated with steady state heat transfer techniques.
