Dielectric elastomer actuators (DEAs) are a promising technology for soft robotics. The use of DEAs has many advantages, including light weight, resilience, and fast response for its applications, such as grippers, artificial muscles, and heel strike generators. Grippers are commonly used as grasping devices. In this study, we focus on DEA applications and propose a technology to expand the applicability of a soft gripper. The advantages of gripper-based DEAs include light weight, fast response, and low cost. We fabricated soft grippers using multiple DEA layers. The grippers successfully held or gripped an object, and we investigated the response time of the grippers and their angle characteristics. We studied the relationship between the number of DEA layers and the performance of our grippers. Our experimental results show that the multi-layered DEAs have the potential to be strong grippers.

A new actuation mechanism using the twisted string concept to trigger the snap-through of a bistable buckled beam to produce an effective on/off bistable actuator is proposed. The twisted string concept combined with a pin utilizes actuation moment to actuate a bistable beam. The required actuation loads are analytically formulated using the Euler–Bernoulli beam model and solved with the proposed solution algorithm. The actuation mechanism is fabricated to meet the 24.3 N mm actuation requirements. A prototype of the actuator was built, and its performance was evaluated. In a unidirectional actuation, an actuator response time of 104 ms was achieved. The overall response time of the actuator is affected by the length of the string. The twisted string mechanism was also placed in an antagonistic configuration to enable bidirectional actuation. The shape of the input voltage signal also affected the bidirectional performance of the actuator. The actuator produced an actuation bandwidth of 2 and 5 Hz with sine and square input voltages, respectively, while generating 10 mm output displacement.

Because of its excellent energy dissipation capacity, friction damper has a wide application in engineering structure, while its use is restricted by constant frictional force. Piezoelectric ceramic actuator has electrochromic deformation ability, by the use of this advantage to combine piezoelectric ceramic actuator with friction damper to form piezoelectric friction damper. This paper conducts some experiments, firstly to study the force output performance, response time of ordinary piezoelectric friction damper, hysteretic behavior as well as its energy dissipation, secondly to study the performance of the Pall-typed piezoelectric friction damper which is consisted by Pall-typed frictional damper and piezoelectric ceramic actuator. The results show piezoelectric friction dampers have good force output capacity and they increase with the input voltage increases; the dampers have a quick response and a short response time; the hysteretic behaviors are stable, which almost has no relevance with loading frequency.

In this paper, a variable-focus ultrasonic liquid lens controlled by the external voltage is demonstrated. That is, the liquid lens can be reshaped with the external voltage, which will cause the focal length to change. The relationship between liquid lens’ shape and the control voltage was obtained. The influence factors of the response time were researched. And the distribution of the ultrasonic field after the lens under different external control voltages was simulated.
