The concentrations of NaCl in aqueous solutions have been determined with the use of near-IR spectra between 1100 and 1900 nm. Models expressing the concentration of NaCl are developed with linear and nonlinear regression with the use of the absorbances at selected wavelengths and with principal component regression (PCR) using entire spectra. Temperature perturbations on water bands interfere with the measurement of NaCl but can be removed by linear or nonlinear regressions using the absorbances at the wavelengths where the temperature effects are zero, or they can be accounted for by PCR. Standard errors of 5 mM and a detection limit of IS mM are obtained for NaCl. This technique can be applied for quantitative analysis of NaCl in the laboratory or can be readily adapted for continuous monitoring in process control.

An UV-VIS-Near-IR spectroscopic method for determination of optical loss in organic/polymeric films has been suggested. The optical losses of two polyimide polymers with push-pull azobenzene chromophore attached were examined by this method and the data were calibrated by conventional optical method.

AbstractFuture prospects in observational galaxy evolution are reviewed from a personal perspective. New insights will especially come from high-redshift integral field kinematic data and similar low-redshift observations in very large and definitive surveys. We will start to systematically probe the mass structures of galaxies and their haloes via lensing from new imaging surveys and upcoming near-IR spectroscopic surveys will finally obtain large numbers of rest frame optical spectra at high-redshift routinely. ALMA will be an important new ingredient, spatially resolving the molecular gas fuelling the high star-formation rates seen in the early Universe.

AbstractWe discuss the use of seeing-limited near-IR spectroscopic imaging combined with high resolution millimeter and submillimeter wave observations, as a diagnostic in the study of the nuclear interstellar medium in starburst galaxies and active galactic nuclei. As an example, recent near-IR spectroscopic imaging of the starburst galaxy NGC 253 is analyzed. It is shown that the central ~ 100 pc of NGC 253 contains a number of giant star forming complexes, the stellar content of which is at least as large as that of the 30 Dor region in the LMC. We suggest the use of the [FeII]/Brγ ratio as an approximate age indicator for such complexes. The warm component of the nuclear molecular medium in NGC 253 detected in submillimeter CO spectra and in near-IR rovibrational lines of H2 is probably heated by stellar UV radiation or slow shocks in star forming regions, rather than by supernova remnant shocks. There are indications that molecular material is being removed from the nuclear region by the “superwind” observed in optical emission lines.
