The role of top-down processing on the horizontal-vertical line length illusion was examined by means of an ambiguous room with dual visual verticals. In one of the test conditions, the subjects were cued to one of the two verticals and were instructed to cognitively reassign the apparent vertical to the cued orientation. When they have mentally adjusted their perception, two lines in a plus sign configuration appeared and the subjects had to evaluate which line was longer. The results showed that the line length appeared longer when it was aligned with the direction of the vertical currently perceived by the subject. This study provides a demonstration that top-down processing influences lower level visual processing mechanisms. In another test condition, the subjects had all perceptual cues available and the influence was even stronger.

An non-vertical stereoscopic 3-D display method by changing the parallax value of the parallax images is proposed. This method is capable of displaying virtual reality with high-immersion sense because the observing depth only depends on the parallax value. An experimental 3-D display system capable of producing high-immersion and virtual reality video images at 45 degree is developed. Furthermore, the effectiveness of the method is demonstrated by using this system.

Resistance to distraction is a key component of executive functions and is strongly linked to the prefrontal cortex. Recent evidence suggests that neural mechanisms exist for selective suppression of task-irrelevant information. However, neuronal signals related to selective suppression have not yet been identified, whereas nonselective surround suppression, which results from attentional enhancement for relevant stimuli, has been well documented. This study examined single neuron activities in the lateral PFC when monkeys covertly tracked one of randomly moving objects. Although many neurons responded to the target, we also found a group of neurons that exhibited a selective response to the distractor that was visually identical to the target. Because most neurons were insensitive to an additional distractor that explicitly differed in color from the target, the brain seemed to monitor the distractor only when necessary to maintain internal object segregation. Our results suggest that the lateral PFC might provide at least two top–down signals during covert object tracking: one for enhancement of visual processing for the target and the other for selective suppression of visual processing for the distractor. These signals might work together to discriminate objects, thereby regulating both the sensitivity and specificity of target choice during covert object tracking.

We introduce and present preliminary results for a hybrid display system combining head-mounted and projector-based displays. Our work is motivated by a surgical training application where it is necessary to simultaneously provide both a highfidelity view of a central close-up task (the surgery) and visual awareness of objects and events in the surrounding environment. In this article, we motivate the use of a hybrid display system, discuss previous work, describe a prototype along with methods for geometric calibration, and present results from a controlled human subject experiment. This article is an invited resubmission of work presented at IEEE Virtual Reality 2003. The article has been updated and expanded to include (among other things) additional related work and more details about the calibration process.

AbstractWe assessed how self-motion affects the visual representation of the self. We constructed a novel virtual reality experiment that systematically varied an avatar’s motion and also biological sex. Participants were presented with pairs of avatars that visually represented the participant (“self avatar”), or another person (“opposite avatar”). Avatar motion either corresponded with the participant’s motion, or was decoupled from the participant’s motion. The results show that participants identified with i) “self avatars” over “opposite avatars”, ii) avatars moving congruently with self-motion over incongruent motion, and importantly iii) identification with the “opposite avatar” over the “self avatar” when the opposite avatar’s motion was congruent with self-motion. Our results suggest that both self-motion and biological sex are relevant to the body schema and body image and that congruent bottom-up visual feedback of self-motion is particularly important for the sense of self and capable of overriding top-down self-identification factors such as biological sex.

The virtual reality visual display system creates a realistic virtual product display system, allowing users to swim in a three-dimensional virtual environment and perform interactive operations, fully simulating the process of shopping selection and payment in reality, so that users have an immersive feeling. The purpose of this article is to realize the design of an immersive 5G virtual reality visual display system through big-data digital city technology. This paper uses big-data digital city technology to design and implement an immersive virtual reality visualization system from the three-dimensional display mode of vision, hearing, and touch, creating a real and interactive three-dimensional visualization environment for users to have a more intuitive visual experience. The experimental results of this paper show that the smoothness of the virtual reality visualization system test can reach 60FPS, the excellent rate reaches nearly 33%, and the model scene-realistic feedback excellent rate is about 62.5%.
