Nowadays, the most promising approach is the use of fiber-optic sensors as a key element of the monitoring system. Fiber-optic sensors (FOS) have a number of advantages, the most important of which include immunity to electromagnetic interference, low weight and the possibility of their inclusion in the measured structure. The use of such sensors in the monitoring system will make it possible to simplify the measurement and obtain reliable data, as well as to obtain all new possibilities for measuring various quantities simultaneously.The most perspective are the sensors based on the Bragg fiber gratings. Bragg fiber gratings have several advantages, for instance, they allow creating the distributed measuring massifs, which contain several sensors. As well, they are insensitive to the optic power source vibrations. Variety of using the fiber sensors based on the Bragg fiber gratings has led to producing the Bragg fiber gratings with different spectral characteristics.The article herein considers the issues of the Bragg fiber gratings mathematical modeling using the transfer matrix method. Transfer matrix method allows defining the optical components spectral characteristics based on the bound modes theory and description of electromagnetic wave, passing through an optic fiber. In the article there have been analyzed the Bragg fiber gratings in compliance with spectral features, such as transmission and reflectance spectra.

Diagnostics and assessment of the structural performance of collectors and tunnels require multi-criteria as well as comprehensive analyses for improving the safety based on acquired measurement data. This paper presents the basic goals for a structural health monitoring system designed based on distributed fiber optic sensors (DFOS). The issue of selecting appropriate sensors enabling correct strain transfer is discussed hereafter, indicating both limitations of layered cables and advantages of sensors with monolithic cross-section design in terms of reliable measurements. The sensor’s design determines the operation of the entire monitoring system and the usefulness of the acquired data for the engineering interpretation. The measurements and results obtained due to monolithic DFOS sensors are described hereafter on the example of real engineering structure—the Burakowski concrete collector in Warsaw during its strengthening with glass-fiber reinforced plastic (GRP) panels.

An absence of proper design rules has limited the application of composite materials to specific areas. However, within these application areas there is still a need to regular monitor the component resulting in significant downtime and loss of revenue. To overcome this it is proposed to have an on-line monitoring system capable of global checking of the component. Fiber optic polarimetric sensors are chosen in this study to globally characterize the health of a component. Polarimetric sensors have better sensitivity than intensity sensors and at the same time are more rugged than interferometric sensors. In this study, the effect of debonds and fiber breakages are investigated in composite bend specimens.

Abstract The development of monitoring system technology enables more accurate measurement at regular intervals of many parameters affecting the safety and proper functioning of underground infrastructure. Means of monitoring underground infrastructure using distributed fiber optic sensors (DFOS) are presented in this paper. DFOS use is developing rapidly and investment is increasingly visible internationally – examples are given. The preliminary results are also presented of research on the application of DFOS for monitoring pipeline deformation and thin-walled GRP (FRP) panels used in the renovation of existing sewage networks.
