This study reports on the use of poly(lactic acid) (PLA) as a renewable thermoplastic adhesive for laminated panels using birch, spruce, and pine veneers. Consolidated panels were prepared from veneer and PLA foils by hot-pressing from 140 to 180 °C to achieve minimum bondline temperatures. Evaluation of panel properties revealed that the PLA-bonded panels met minimum tensile strength and internal bond strength performance criteria. However, the adhesion interface which developed within individual bondlines varied with distinctions between hardwood and softwood species and PLA grades. Birch samples developed greater bondline strength with a higher pressing temperature using semi-crystalline PLA, whereas higher temperatures produced a poorer performance with the use of amorphous PLA. Panels formed with spruce or pine veneers had lower bondline performance and were also similarly distinguished by their pressing temperature and PLA grade. Furthermore, the potential for PLA-bonded laminated panels was demonstrated by cold water soak testing. Samples exhibiting relatively greater bondline adhesion had wet tensile strength values comparable to those tested in dry state. Our study outcomes suggest the potential for PLA bonding of veneers and panel overlays with the added benefits of being renewable and a no added formaldehyde system.

In this paper, free and forced vibrations of symmetric laminated composite plates are studied analytically by using a perturbation method where the analytical results for transverse displacement are compared with the numerical results. The external force is taken to be harmonic in time and having uniform amplitude.

Nickel layers with tensile or pressure residual stress were prepared by electroforming technique from two kinds of electrolyte. Subsequent heat treatment was adopted to get the stress released. The coefficients of thermal expansion (CTEs) were measured with a thermal dilatometer and the relationship between residual stress and the measured CTEs was revealed both from experimental results and theoretical analysis.

In the present work, a micro-electro-mechanical system (MEMS)-based electrostatic micromotor is designed and fabricated. Finite element analysis is done and various parameters affecting the torque are studied. Maximum torque is achieved at 120° phase angle. The effect of change in voltage, micromotor height and frequency is analysed and discussed. UV-SLIGA, a microfabrication technique, is used for the fabrication of electrostatic micromotor of height 30µm and higher. UV lithography is conducted by both positive AZ P4620 and negative (SU-8 10 and SU-8 2150) photoresists. Copper (Cu) is used as a sacrificial layer to release the rotor (the movable part) of the electrostatic micromotor. Electroformed nickel (Ni) is used for making stator, rotor and axle, whereas chromium (Cr) is used as a seed layer. The micromotor is fabricated with a stator-rotor pole having configuration ratio of 3:2. The gap between the rotor and axle is 20 µm. Wet chemical etching is used to etch the deposited metal layers (Cr, Ni and Cu). Challenges such as the adhesion between the photoresist mould and substrate, cracks, seepage and misalignment are faced during the microfabrication. These challenges are overcome by optimizing the various parameters. The fabrication of electrostatic micromotor is done successfully and the results are discussed in the article.
