All-optical characterization of fs-laser induced refractive index changes in bulk and at the surface of zinc phosphate glasses

Three AsxTe100−x films with different x and dissimilar average thickness d ¯ are characterized mainly from one interference transmittance spectrum T(λ = 300 to 3000 nm) of such film on a substrate based on the advanced optimizing envelope method (AOEM). A simple dual transformation of T(λ) is proposed and used for increasing the accuracy of computation of its envelopes T+(λ) and T−(λ) accounting for the significant glass substrate absorption especially for λ > 2500 nm. The refractive index n(λ) of As40Te60 and As98Te2 films is determined with a relative error <0.30%. As far as we know, the As80Te20 film is the only one with anomalous dispersion and the thickest, with estimated d ¯ = 1.1446 nm, ever characterized by an envelope method. It is also shown and explained why the extinction coefficient k(λ) of any of the three AsxTe100−x films is computed more accurately from the quantity Ti(λ) = [T+(λ)T−(λ)]0.5 compared to its commonly employed computation from T+(λ). The obtained results strengthen our conviction that the AOEM has a capacity for providing most accurate optical characterization of almost every dielectric or semiconductor film with d ¯ > 300 nm on a substrate, compared to all the other methods for characterization of such films only from T(λ).

The local modification of the composition of glasses by high repetition femtosecond laser irradiation is an attractive method for producing photonic devices. Recently, the successful production of waveguides with a refractive index contrast (Δn) above 10−2 by fs-laser writing has been demonstrated in phosphate glasses containing La2O3 and K2O modifiers. This large index contrast has been related to a local enrichment in lanthanum in the light guiding region accompanied by a depletion in potassium. In this work, we have studied the influence of the initial glass composition on the performance of waveguides that are produced by fs-laser induced element redistribution (FLIER) in phosphate-based samples with different La and K concentrations. We have analyzed the contribution to the electronic polarizability of the different glass constituents based on refractive index measurements of the untreated samples, and used it to estimate the expected index contrast caused by the experimentally measured local compositional changes in laser written guiding structures. These estimated values have been compared to experimental ones that are derived from near field images of the guided modes with an excellent agreement. Therefore, we have developed a method to estimate before-hand the expected index contrast in fs-laser written waveguides via FLIER for a given glass composition. The obtained results stress the importance of considering the contribution to the polarizability of all the moving species when computing the expected refractive index changes that are caused by FLIER processes.

Tuning the concentration of nanoparticles (NPs) to accommodate wider application demanded a better understanding of the physicals and structural properties of the glass. A series of zinc phosphate glasses with the composition of (57-x) P2O5- 40ZnO-3Tb2O3 –xCuO, (0 ≤ x ≤ 2 mol %) has been prepared by melt quenching technique and their physical and optical characterization have been studied. The X-Ray Diffraction technique and UV-Vis Spectroscopy have been used to characterize the glass sample. The XRD confirms the amorphous nature of the prepared glasses. The physical properties of glasses with different CuO NPs such as density, molar volume, refractive index and electronic polarizability are determined. It is found that both density and molar volume decreases with increasing CuO NPs concentration. The optical band gap (4.54 eV-2.96 eV) and the Urbach energy (0.19 eV-0.54 eV) are showing a decreasing trend with the increasing amount of CuO NPs.This is due to the formation of non-bridging oxygen, (NBO) in the glass network. The glass exhibits high refractive index ~2.40 and polarizability ~1.12 ×10-23 cm3 and is useful for solid-state laser and optoelectronic devices.
