A Feynman-diagram-based approach to calculating the spectra of highly charged ions is described and applied to lithiumlike and sodiumlike ions. Discrepancies between calculations excluding the two-loop Lamb shift and experiment allow that shift to be determined, as the accuracy of EBIT experiments is well below the size of the effect. The present status of the theory of hyperfine splitting is described, where a large quantum electrodynamics (QED) effect is made difficult to observe because of nuclear physics uncertainties. The importance of a correct treatment of nuclear recoil at present levels of accuracy is stressed, and prospects for a full QED treatment of copperlike ions are discussed. HIRFL has been upgraded for basic research on nuclear physics, atomic physics, irradiative material and biology from beginning of this decade. So far, the main performances of HIRFL have improved in the beam species from light ion to uranium and the maximum beam intensities reaching ~10μA from SFC, 1.5 μA from SSC. Therefore, some experiments have been performed during this period, especially, on new isotope synthesis and unstable nuclear physics. The new upgrading project Cooling Storage Ring (CSR) is under commissioning by ~2p μA carbon beam stripping injection. About 109 C ion have stored inside CSRm, and part of them have been cooling down by the electron cooler. The acceleration of CSRm also has been test successful. Some future experiment are under development.

J-PARC Hadron Experimental Facility is designed to carry out a variety of particle and nuclear physics experiments with intense secondary particles generated by 750 kW proton beams. The first construction stage including the experimental hall, the primary beam line, and one secondary beam line (K1.8BR) has been completed at the end of December 2008. In order to handle the high intensity primary beam safely, we have developed many special devices working under severe radiation environment. The present article reports the current status of the Hadron Experimental Facility in detail.

The Moment

The method of experiments with internal targets in the storage ring was proposed at the moment of creation of the first storage ring of charged particles. This method has demonstrated dramatic advances during the last 50 years. The most clearly visible progress can be seen in experiments with polarized gas targets. In this report we shall review: (a) the experiments on nuclear physics in the storage rings on the measure of polarization observables in different reactions with electron/positron and proton/deuteron beams, (b) the use of polarized gas targets in the storage ring for polarimetry of the circulated beams. The present status of the activity in this field of experimental physics is given.

SummaryIsotopic shifts in the lines of the heavy elements in Ap stars, and the characteristic abundance pattern of these elements point to the fact that we are observing mainly the products of rapid neutron capture. The peculiar A stars may be treated as the show windows for the products of a recent r-process in their neighbourhood. This process can be located either in Supernovae exploding in a binary system in which the present Ap stars were secondaries, or in Supernovae exploding in young clusters. Secondary processes, e.g. spontaneous fission or nuclear reactions with highly abundant fission products, may occur further with the r-processed material in the surface of the Ap stars. The role of these stars to the theory of nucleosynthesis and to nuclear physics is emphasized.
