Simulation and Analysis of the Supercritical ORC Heat Exchanger

The traditional organic Rankine cycle (ORC) is operated below critical point. However, the specific heat of the working fluid undergoes tremendous change near the critical point. This can improve the thermal performance of the system due to the enhancement of heat transfer coefficient within the heat exchanger. However, the strong temperature dependence of thermo-physical properties of the working fluid especially at near the critical point requires much more efforts in designing a heat exchanger. Hence, more elaborate calculation involving stepwise integration is needed as far as accuracy is concerned. Therefore the heat exchanger is divided into several segments. The outlet temperatures of the first segment serve as the input parameters for the second segment, and the process is carried out further on. The fluid properties are calculated with the actual bulk temperature of each segment. With increasing number of segments, better resolution of temperature distribution of both heat source and working fluid within the heat exchanger is achieved. In the present study, a plate heat exchanger was numerically examined by using R-245fa as a working fluid at a supercritical condition. The effects of the working pressure and mass flow rate were examined in detail. For all cases in this study, the maximum of the total heat transfer rate was achieved by a working pressure of 3700 kPa, especially close to critical pressure. It is found that at a working pressure of 4000 kPa and mass flow rate ranging from 1 kg/s to 1.75 kg/s, the total heat transfer rate was independent of the mass flow rate.

In this investigation of multi heat pipe induced in heat exchanger shows the developments in heat transfer is to improve the efficiency of heat exchangers. Water is used as a heat transfer fluid and acetone is used as a working fluid. Rotameter is set to measure the flow rate of cold water and hot water. To maintain the parameter as experimental setup. Then set the mass flow rate of hot water as 40 LPH, 60LPH, 80 LPH, 100LPH, 120 LPH and mass flow rate of cold water as 20 LPH, 30 LPH, 40 LPH, 50 LPH, and 60 LPH. Then 40 C, 45 ºC, 50 ºC, 55 C, 60 ºC are the temperatures of hot water at inlet are maintained. To find some various physical parameters of Qc , hc , Re ,, Pr , Rth. The maximum effectiveness of the investigation obtained from condition of Thi 60 C, Tci 32 C and 100 LPH mhi, 60 LPH mci the maximum effectiveness attained as 57.25. Then the mhi as 100 LPH, mci as 60 LPH and Thi at 40 C as 37.6%. It shows the effectiveness get increased about 34.3 to the maximum conditions.

In this research work, the design of pipe in pipe, shelland-tube and combined heat exchanger (previously mentioned types were combined to consider as one unit) has been made. These three heat exchangers have been utilized for two kinds of flows i.e., parallel as well counter flow types individually. The design of combined heat exchanger takes been proposed with the idea of increasing the heat transfer area and to understand the behavior of various parameters involved by comparing with the individual heat exchangers. 75:25 aqueous Ethylene Glycols, have been used as the working fluid in all three heat exchangers of counter as well parallel flow conditions. Total quantity of working fluid is 12 liters, in which 6liters of fluid is used as cold fluid and the other half is used as hot fluid. As a result, overall heat transfer coefficient (U) has been increased with increase of mass flow rate. Highest overall heat transfer coefficient value observed as 1943w/m2 -k at highest mass flow rate (within the considerations of this work) of 0.145 kg/s. The highest decrement in LMTD recorded for 0.0425 to 0.145 increase of mass flow rate is 49.32% in shell-and-tube heat exchanger of parallel flow arrangement. The highest effectiveness is observed for pipe in pipe counter flow heat exchanger case, which is 0.39 at a mass flow rate of 0.145kg/s.

Experimentally to analyzed the enhance performance of Plate heat exchanger in milk pasteurization process using nanofluid at different concentration of 0.1%,0.15%,0.2% 0.25% and 0.3%. in this work the nanoparticles like Al2O3 and the base fluid like dematerialized water is used to prepare nanofluid by using two steps method. Exchanger is one of the thermal energy transferring devices, which transfer the heat between different fluids. This is widely used in different application because of its compact in size and higher efficiency compared to other type of heat exchanger. The main focus of using nanofluid is that it has improvement in thermal conductivity. Then the hot fluid as milk and cold fluid as nanofluids are used. The heat transfer rate is increased with increasing the concentration of nanofluid. It conducted by varying operating parameters like mass flow rate of hot milk, mass flow rate of nanofluid, inlet and outlet temperatures of hot milk and inlet outlet temperature of nanofluid. The main objective of this work is to find out mass flow rate and overall, all heat transfer coefficient.

AbstractAlternative (unconventional) deep geothermal designs are needed to provide a secure and efficient geothermal energy supply. An in-depth sensitivity analysis was investigated considering a deep borehole closed-loop heat exchanger (DBHE) to overcome the current limitations of deep EGS. A T2Well/EOS1 model previously calibrated on an experimental DBHE in Hawaii was adapted to the current NWG 55-29 well at the Newberry volcano site in Central Oregon. A sensitivity analysis was carried out, including parameters such as the working fluid mass flow rate, the casing and cement thermal properties, and the wellbore radii dimensions. The results conclude the highest energy flow rate to be 1.5 MW, after an annulus radii increase and an imposed mass flow rate of 5 kg/s. At 3 kg/s, the DBHE yielded an energy flow rate a factor of 3.5 lower than the NWG 55-29 conventional design. Despite this loss, the sensitivity analysis allows an assessment of the key thermodynamics within the wellbore and provides a valuable insight into how heat is lost/gained throughout the system. This analysis was performed under the assumption of subcritical conditions, and could aid the development of unconventional designs within future EGS work like the Newberry Deep Drilling Project (NDDP). Requirements for further software development are briefly discussed, which would facilitate the modelling of unconventional geothermal wells in supercritical systems to support EGS projects that could extend to deeper depths.

Abstract Cooling is indispensable for maintaining the desired performance and reliability over a very huge variety of products like electronic devices, computer, automobiles, high power laser system etc. Apart from the heat load amplification and heat fluxes caused by many industrial products, cooling is one of the major technical challenges encountered by the industries like manufacturing sectors, transportation, microelectronics, etc. Normally water, ethylene glycol and oil are being used as the fluid to carry away the heat in these devices. The development of nanofluid generally shows a better heat transfer characteristics than the water. This research work summarizes the experimental study of the forced convective heat transfer and flow characteristics of a nanofluid consisting of water and 1% Al2O3 (volume concentration) nanoparticle flowing in a parallel flow, counter flow and shell and tube heat exchanger under laminar flow conditions. The Al2O3 nanoparticles of about 50 nm diameter are used in this work. Three different mass flow rates have been selected and the experiments have been conducted and their results are reported. This result portrays that the overall heat transfer coefficient and dimensionless Nusselt number of nanofluid is slightly higher than that of the base liquid at same mass flow rate at same inlet temperature. From the experimental result it is clear that the overall heat transfer coefficient of the nanofluid increases with an increase in the mass flow rate. It shows that whenever mass flow rate increases, the overall heat transfer coefficient along with Nusselt number eventually increases irrespective of flow direction. It was also found that during the increase in mass flow rate LMTD value ultimately decreases irrespective of flow direction. However, shell and tube heat exchanger provides better heat transfer characteristics than parallel and counter flow heat exchanger due to multi pass flow of nanofluid. The overall heat transfer coefficient, Nusselt number and logarithmic mean temperature difference of the water and Al2O3 /water nanofluid are also studied and the results are plotted graphically.

A heat exchanger is a device intensively used for enhancing the transfer of heat energy between two or more working fluids at different temperature, which are in thermal contact. The optimal design and efficient operation of heat exchanger and heat transfer network are of a great significance in any of the process industry. The heat transfer efficiency depends on both design of heat exchanger and property of working fluid. From various types of heat exchanger, the double stacked shell and tube heat exchanger with straight tube and single pass is to be under study. Here the redesign of heat exchanger takes place with the key objectives of optimizing the pressure drop, optimizing the heat transfer rate and reducing the saddle support weight used for cooling purpose in brewery application. The design calculations are carried out using the Kerns and Bell Delwar method and other important parameters dealing with material selection and geometries are also taken into consideration. FEA analysis for optimizing the saddle support weight is carried out using Dassault systeme’s Solidworks while the CFD analysis for optimizing pressure drop and heat transfer rate is carried out using Dassault systeme’s Solidworks analysis software and the design and working of Shell and tube heat exchanger is determined in terms of variables such as pressure ,temperature ,mass flow rate ,flow rate ,energy input output that are of particular interest in Shell and tube heat exchanger analysis.

A heat exchanger is a device used to transfer thermal energy between two or more liquids, between a solid surface and a liquid, or between solid particles and a liquid at different temperatures and in thermal contact where shell and tube heat exchangers contain a large number of tubes packed in a jacket whose axes are parallel to those of the shell. Heat transfer occurs when one fluid flows into the pipes while the other flows out of the pipes through the jacket. In industry, three-tube heat exchanger tubes are used as condensers, evaporators, sub cooler, heat recovery heat exchangers, etc. The three concentric tube heat exchanger is a constructively modified version of the double concentric tube heat exchanger as an intermediate tube adds some advantages over the double tube heat exchangers in that it is larger tube surface area heat transfer per unit of length.  In the present study, the triple tube heat exchanger is further modified by inserting helical baffle over the surface of one of the tubes and observed turbulence flow which may lead to high heat transfer rates between the fluids of heat exchanger. Further, the Reynolds number, Nusselt number, friction factor of the flow at different mass flow rates of the hot fluid while keeping a constant mass flow rate of cold and normal temperature fluids were calculated. It was found that as the mass flow rate of the fluid increases the Reynolds number increases, the turbulence in the flow will increase which will cause the intermixing of the fluid, higher the rate of intermixing, more will be the heat transfer of the system.

Scale formation in risers and header of direct solar hot water systems is a problem in places where hard water is being used. In this paper, the effect of scaling on energy efficiency indices such as instantaneous efficiency, mass flow rate, and overall heat loss coefficient are quantified by Hottel–Whillier–Bliss equation in the case of thermosiphon and forced circulation systems. The effect of scaling on mass flow and heat transfer rate for both the systems are quantified with experimental validation. Experimentally found mass flow rate is 50% of the analytical mass flow rate for a clean riser and agrees 99% for the case of riser with 3.75 mm scale thickness. This is due to the extreme change in pressure gain in the narrow region. Scale mapping is done for the entire solar hot water system to study the nature of scale growth. The complete footer and nine risers for the length of 150 mm from footer are free from scaling in axial and radial direction. This is due to the low water temperature in the region. The major portion of header and risers for the length 180 mm from the header are completely blocked due to maximum temperature of water in that region. A scale prediction model is brought out based on the experimentally observed scaled water heaters in the field. It reveals that the major parameters to be considered for the correlation are water total hardness and calcium hardness. It is seen in the thermosiphon system that the mass flow rate decreased by scaling affects energy efficiency more than that caused by the heat transfer rate. The scaling effect is more predominant in thermosiphon systems than in forced circulation systems. The analytical study reveals a drop in instantaneous efficiency of 39.5% in thermosiphon system and 7.0% in the case of forced circulation system for the scale thickness of 3.75 mm. The difference between mass flow rate in scaled and unscaled condition is less in forced circulation but much higher in thermosiphon system.
