Submergence and Wave Impact Loads During Dry Transportation of an Offshore Structure

In this paper, the submergence and wave impact loads acting on an offshore structure when transported on a heavy lift vessel has been experimentally studied. The nonlinear global system response under the effect of direct wave loads on the cargo has been investigated. An approach is developed to derive the global direct wave loads time history acting on the cargo in three-dimensions and correlate them to the submergence event. Numerical results are presented to illustrate this approach. Seafastening loads time history are also presented and correlated to the submergence event. Cargo Stability requirements against uplift and overturning on the vessel have been examined and reported.

This paper describes the assessment of waves and wave effects with respect to the design of a jetty at Plymouth, Montserrat, in the eastern Caribbean Sea. A previous jetty was destroyed in 1989 by Hurricane Hugo, and a critical part of the new jetty's design relates to the effects of waves. Particular attention is given to the establishment of design wave conditions. This includes both hurricane and non-hurricane conditions and requires a consideration of wave shoaling and refraction, as well as wave breaking in the vicinity of the jetty. The prediction of design wave loads includes the calculation of drag and inertia forces and an assessment of impact loads due to waves on the underside of the jetty and waves breaking onto the deck. Hydraulic shaker, equipment of simulating laboratory vibration environment, can accurately replicate the given power spectral density (PSD) and time history with an appropriate control algorithm. By studying method Hv estimator of frequency response function (FRF) estimation, a FRF identification strategy based on the Hv estimator is designed to increase the convergence rapidity and improve the system response function specialty. The system amplitude-frequency characteristics in some frequency points or frequency bands have large fluctuation. To solve this issue, a step-varying and frequency-sectioning iterative correction control algorithm is proposed for the control of 2-axial exciter PSD replication tests and the results show that the algorithm has a good effect on the control of hydraulic shaker, and can achieve reliable and high-precision PSD replication.

The Navy’s mine impact burial prediction model creates a time history of a cylindrical or a noncylindrical mine as it falls through air, water, and sediment. The output of the model is the predicted mine trajectory in air and water columns, burial depth/orientation in sediment, as well as height, area, and volume protruding. Model inputs consist of parameters of environment, mine characteristics, and initial release. This paper reviews near three decades’ effort on model development from one to three dimensions: (1) one-dimensional models predict the vertical position of the mine’s center of mass (COM) with the assumption of constant falling angle, (2) two-dimensional models predict the COM position in the (x,z) plane and the rotation around the y-axis, and (3) three-dimensional models predict the COM position in the (x,y,z) space and the rotation around the x-, y-, and z-axes. These models are verified using the data collected from mine impact burial experiments. The one-dimensional model only solves one momentum equation (in the z-direction). It cannot predict the mine trajectory and burial depth well. The two-dimensional model restricts the mine motion in the (x,z) plane (which requires motionless for the environmental fluids) and uses incorrect drag coefficients and inaccurate sediment dynamics. The prediction errors are large in the mine trajectory and burial depth prediction (six to ten times larger than the observed depth in sand bottom of the Monterey Bay). The three-dimensional model predicts the trajectory and burial depth relatively well for cylindrical, near-cylindrical mines, and operational mines such as Manta and Rockan mines.

Abstract Slamming events due to wave impact on the underside of decks might lead to severe and potentially harmful local and/or global loads in offshore structures. The strong nonlinearities during the impact require a robust method for accessing the loads and hinder the use of analytical models. The use of computation fluid dynamics (CFD) is an interesting alternative to estimate the impact loads, but validation through experimental data is still essential. The present work focuses on a flat-bottomed model fixed over the mean free surface level submitted to regular incoming waves. The proposal is to reproduce previous studies through CFD and model tests in a different reduced scale to provide extra validation and to identify possible non-potential scale effects such as air compressibility. Numerical simulations are performed in both experiments’ scales. The numerical analysis is performed with a marine dedicated flow solver, FINE™/Marine from NUMECA, which features an unsteady Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (URANS) solver and a finite volume method to build spatial discretization. The multiphase flow is represented through the Volume of Fluid (VOF) method for incompressible and nonmiscible fluids. The new model tests were performed at the wave channel of the Laboratory of Waves and Currents (LOC/COPPE – UFRJ), at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro.

Impact loads from waves on vessels and coastal structures are highly complex and may involve wave breaking, making these changes difficult to estimate numerically or empirically. Results from previous experiments have shown a wide range of forces and pressures measured from breaking and non-breaking waves, with no clear trend between wave characteristics and the localized forces and pressures that they generate. In 2008, a canonical breaking wave impact data set was obtained at the Naval Surface Warfare Center, Carderock Division, by measuring the distribution of impact pressures of incident non-breaking and breaking waves on one face of a cube. The effects of wave height, wavelength, face orientation, face angle, and submergence depth were investigated. A limited number of runs were made at low forward speeds, ranging from about 0.5 to 2 knots (0.26 to 1.03 m/s). The measurement cube was outfitted with a removable instrumented plate measuring 1 ft2 (0.09 m2), and the wave heights tested ranged from 8–14 inches (20.3 to 35.6 cm). The instrumented plate had 9 slam panels of varying sizes made from polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and 11 pressure gages; this data was collected at 5 kHz to capture the dynamic response of the gages and panels and fully resolve the shapes of the impacts. A Kistler gage was used to measure the total force averaged over the cube face. A bottom mounted acoustic Doppler current profiler (ADCP) was used to obtain measurements of velocity through the water column to provide incoming velocity boundary conditions. A Light Detecting and Ranging (LiDAR) system was also used above the basin to obtain a surface mapping of the free surface over a distance of approximately 15 feet (4.6 m). Additional point measurements of the free surface were made using acoustic distance sensors. Standard and high-speed video cameras were used to capture a qualitative assessment of the impacts. Impact loads on the plate tend to increase with wave height, as well as with plate inclination toward incoming waves. Further trends of the pressures and forces with wave characteristics, cube orientation, draft and face angle are investigated and presented in this paper, and are also compared with previous test results.

Subsidence of the Ekofisk platforms creates several operational challenges. For safety of the platforms, it is of great importance to find the wave impact loads acting on the platforms’ decks. The paper describes how such loads can be computed. Three theoretical wave models are discussed in the paper: the Airy wave, Airy wave modified through Wheeler stretching and the 5th order non-linear Stokes wave. The wave loads for these wave models are computed by various methods. The method based on momentum displacement approach and Morison-type equation developed by Dr. Kaplan is used as a reference point. The loads are also computed through a solution of complete Navier-Stokes equations, with the Volume of Fluid (VOF) method used to trace motion of the fluid’s free surface. Results of different wave models and different computational methods are compared and discussed.

This study investigates the variation of wave impact loads with the geometrical configurations of recurve retrofits mounted on the crest of a vertical seawall. Physical model tests were undertaken in a wave flume at the University of Warwick to investigate the effects of the geometrical properties of recurve on the pressure distribution, overall force, and overturning moment at the seawall, subject to both impulsive and non-impulsive waves. Additionally, the wave impact and quasi-static loads on the recurve portion of the retrofitted seawalls are investigated to understand the role of retrofitting on the structural integrity of the vertical seawall. Detailed analysis of laboratory measurements is conducted to understand the effects of overhang length and height of the recurve wall on the wave loading. It is found that the increase in both recurve height and overhang length lead to the increase of horizontal impact force at an average ratio of 1.15 and 1.1 times larger the reference case of a plain vertical wall for the tested configurations. The results also show that the geometrical shape changes in recurve retrofits, increasing the overturning moment enacted by the wave impact force. A relatively significant increase in wave loading (both impact and quasi-static loads) are observed for the higher recurve retrofits, while changes in the overturning moment are limited for the retrofits with longer overhang length. The data generated from the physical modelling measurements presented in this study will be particularly helpful for a range of relevant stakeholders, including coastal engineers, infrastructure designers, and the local authorities in coastal regions. The results of this study can also enable scientists to design and develop robust decision support tools to evaluate the performance of vertical seawalls with recurve retrofitting.

Nonlinearities, whether geometric or material, need to be addressed in seismic analysis. One good analysis method that can address these nonlinearities is direct time integration with Rayleigh damping. Modal damping is the damping typically specified in seismic analysis Codes and Standards (ASCE 4-98, 1998, “Seismic Analysis of Safety-Related Nuclear Structures and Commentary,” American Society of Civil Engineers, Reston, Virginia and ASCE/SEI 43-05, 2005, “Seismic Design Criteria for Structures, Systems, and Components in Nuclear Facilities,” American Society of Civil Engineers, Reston, Virginia.). Modal damping is constant for all frequencies where Rayleigh damping varies with frequency. An approach is proposed here for selection of Rayleigh damping coefficients to be used in seismic analyses that is consistent with given modal damping. The approach uses the difference between the modal damping response and the Rayleigh damping response along with effective mass properties of the model being evaluated to match overall system response levels. This paper provides a simple example problem to demonstrate the approach. It also provides results for a finite element model representing an existing piping system. Displacement, acceleration, and stress results are compared from model runs using modal damping and model runs using Rayleigh damping with coefficients selected using the proposed method.
