Three-Dimensional Wakes of Curved Pipes

A numerical investigation into the flow past curved pipes has been performed. The first group of computations includes curved pipes for which the incoming flow vector is normal to the plane of curvature. For the second group of computations the free-stream flow vector is parallel to the plane of curvature. Different flow conditions have been applied and the corresponding results compared. The vortex shedding patterns and the wake topology are studied and the sectional forces at different locations of the span are also presented. The fully three-dimensional simulations were computed with a spectral/hp element method. The computational results were compared with visualisation experiments undertaken in the towing tank facility of the Department of Aeronautics of Imperial College.

In order to gain a preliminary understanding of the fluid dynamics developed past a curved riser pipe, a numerical investigation into the flow past curved cylinders at a Reynolds number of 100 has been performed. To approximate the flow conditions on curved riser pipes, different velocity profiles and flow directions were applied and the corresponding results compared. In addition, the fluid dynamic loading and the wake structures for curved cylinder flows were investigated. The fully three-dimensional simulations were computed with a spectral/hp element method. The computational results were compared with experiments undertaken in the towing tank facility of the Department of Aeronautics of Imperial College.

Two- and three-dimensional simulations of the flow around straked cylinders are presented. For the two-dimensional simulations we used the Spectral/hp Element Method, and carried out simulations for five different angles of rotation of the cylinder with respect to the free stream. Fixed and elastically-mounted cylinders were tested, and the Reynolds number was kept constant and equal to 150. The results were compared to those obtained from the simulation of the flow around a bare cylinder under the same conditions. We observed that the two-dimensional strakes are not effective in suppressing the vibration of the cylinders, but also noticed that the responses were completely different even with a slight change in the angle of rotation of the body. The three-dimensional results showed that there are two mechanisms of suppression: the main one is the decrease in the vortex shedding correlation along the span, whilst a secondary one is the vortex wake formation farther downstream.

The near wake of a blunt-base cylinder at 10° angle-of-attack to a Mach 2.46 free-stream flow is visualized at several locations to study unsteady aspects of its structure. In both side-view and end-view images, the shear layer flapping grows monotonically as the shear layer develops, similar to the trends seen in a corresponding axisymmetric supersonic base flow. The interface convolution, a measure of the tortuousness of the shear layer, peaks for side-view and end-view images during recompression. The high convolution for a septum of fluid seen in the middle of the wake indicates that the septum actively entrains fluid from the recirculation region, which helps to explain the low base pressure for this wake compared to that for a corresponding axisymmetric wake.

The effect of an incoming wake on the flow around and heat transfer from the stagnation region of a circular cylinder was studied using direct numerical simulations (DNSs). Four simulations were carried out at a Reynolds number (based on free-stream velocity and cylinder diameterD) ofReD= 13200: one two-dimensional (baseline) simulation and three three-dimensional simulations. The three-dimensional simulations comprised a baseline simulation with a uniform incoming velocity field, a simulation in which realistic wake data – generated in a separate precursor DNS – were introduced at the inflow plane and, finally, a simulation in which the turbulent fluctuations were removed from the incoming wake in order to study the effect of the mean velocity deficit on the heat transfer in the stagnation region. In the simulation with realistic wake data, the incoming wake still exhibited the characteristic meandering behaviour of a near-wake. When approaching the regions immediately above and below the stagnation line of the cylinder, the vortical structures from the wake were found to be significantly stretched by the strongly accelerating wall-parallel (circumferential) flow into elongated vortex tubes that became increasingly aligned with the direction of flow. As the elongated streamwise vortical structures impinge on the stagnation region, on one side they transport cool fluid towards the heated cylinder, while on the other side hot fluid is transported away from the cylinder towards the free stream, thereby increasing the heat transfer. The DNS results are compared with various semi-empirical correlations for predicting the augmentation of heat transfer due to free-stream turbulence.

The present works details the occurrence of the Kelvin–Helmholtz instability in a centrifugal compressor operating near stall. The analysis are based on unsteady three dimensional simulations performed on a calculation domain covering the full annulus for the impeller and the vaned diffuser. A detailed investigation of the flow structure is presented, together with its evolution consequent to the mass flow reduction. It is demonstrated that this reduction leads to an enlargement of the low momentum flow region initially induced by the combination of the secondary and leakage flows. When the compressor operates near stall, the shear layer at the interface between the main flow and this low momentum flow becomes unstable and induces a periodic vortex shedding. The frequency of such an unsteady phenomenon is not correlated with the blade passing frequency. Its signature is thus easily isolated from the deterministic rotor/stator interaction. Its detection requires full-annulus simulations with an accurate resolution in time and space, which explains why it has never been previously observed in centrifugal compressors.

This paper considers the effects of free stream turbulence intensity on intermittent boundary layer flows related to turbomachinery. The present experimental investigation has been undertaken under free stream flow conditions dominated by grid generated turbulence and Reynolds numbers appropriate for turbomachinery applications. Unseparated flow transition in the boundary layer has been considered using a flat plate with the C4 leading edge which has been designed to avoid laminar separation. This configuration provided the opportunity to study the effect of a realistic turbomachinery leading edge shape on transition. Boundary layer type hot-wire probes have been used in order to acquire detailed information about the effect of the free stream conditions and the leading edge configuration on the structure of the boundary layer. Furthermore, information about the intermittency distribution throughout the boundary layer has been obtained using statistical analysis of the velocity record of the flow field.

Three-dimensional spectral/hp computations have been performed to study the fundamental mechanisms of vortex shedding in the wake of curved circular cylinders at Reynolds numbers of 100 and 500. The basic shape of the body is a circular cylinder whose centreline sweeps through a quarter section of a ring and the inflow direction lies on the plane of curvature of the quarter ring: the free stream is then parallel to the geometry considered and the part of the ring that is exposed to it will be referred to as the ‘leading edge’. Different configurations were investigated with respect to the leading-edge orientation. In the case of a convex-shaped geometry, the stagnation face is the outer surface of the ring: this case exhibited fully three-dimensional wake dynamics, with the vortex shedding in the upper part of the body driving the lower end at one dominant shedding frequency for the whole cylinder span. The vortex-shedding mechanism was therefore not governed by the variation of local normal Reynolds numbers dictated by the curved shape of the leading edge. A second set of simulations were conducted with the free stream directed towards the inside of the ring, in the so-called concave-shaped geometry. No vortex shedding was detected in this configuration: it is suggested that the strong axial flow due to the body's curvature and the subsequent production of streamwise vorticity plays a key role in suppressing the wake dynamics expected in the case of flow past a straight cylinder. The stabilizing mechanism stemming from the concave curved geometry was still found to govern the wake behaviour even when a vertical extension was added to the top of the concave ring, thereby displacing the numerical symmetry boundary condition at this point away from the top of the deformed cylinder. In this case, however, the axial flow from the deformed cylinder was drawn into the wake of vertical extension, weakening the shedding process expected from a straight cylinder at these Reynolds numbers. These considerations highlight the importance of investigating flow past curved cylinders using a full three-dimensional approach, which can properly take into account the role of axial velocity components without the limiting assumptions of a sectional analysis, as is commonly used in industrial practice. Finally, towing-tank flow visualizations were also conducted and found to be in qualitative agreement with the computational findings.

We review and expand on the control of separated flows over flat plates and aerofoils at low Reynolds numbers associated with micro air vehicles. Experimental observations of the steady-state and transient lift response to actuation, and its dependence on the actuator, aerofoil geometry and flow conditions, are discussed and an attempt is made to unify them in terms of their excitation of periodic and transient vortex shedding. We also examine strategies for closed-loop flow and flight control using actuation of leading-edge vortices.

Introducing a duct along the perimeter of a rotor has been acknowledged to augment turbine performance. The outcome causation due to a bi-directional, cylindrical shroud, however, is uncertain. This study analyses the hydrodynamic swallowing capacity of a true-scale, vacant duct for tidal turbine applications in aligned and yawed inlet flow conditions by utilising three-dimensional unsteady computational fluid dynamics. The performance is investigated within free-stream magnitudes of 1 to 7 m.s−1, and a bearing angular range of 0° to 45° with the duct axis. In proportion to the free-stream magnitude, the normalised axial velocity through the duct increases as a result of a diminishment in pressure drag. Within yawed flow, the maximum capacity falls at a bearing of 23.2°, resulting in a performance increase of 4.13% above that at aligned flow conditions. The analysis concludes that the augmentation at yawed flow occurs due to the duct cross-sectional profile lift variation with angle-of-attack. Towards nominal yaw angle, the internal static pressure reduces, permitting a higher mass-flow rate. Beyond the nominal angle-of-attack, flow separation occurs within the duct, increasing pressure drag, thereby reducing the swallowing capacity.

The distinctive pendulum-like oscillation and pitching patterns of cubic and rectangular slung prisms were inspected for two aspect ratios at various Reynolds numbers $Re$ under two free-stream turbulence levels. Systematic experiments were performed using high-resolution telemetry and hotwire anemometry to quantitatively characterize the dynamics of the prisms and the wake fluctuation. The results show that the dynamics of the prisms can be characterized by two distinctive regions depending on the prism shape. Specifically, in the case of cubic prisms the regions are defined by the growth rate of the pitching amplitude; whereas the dynamics of the rectangular prisms is more sensitive to the angle of attack. In particular, when the large side initially faces the flow, the regions are defined by the synchronization between the vortex shedding and pure oscillations under very low turbulence. When the smaller side initially faces the flow, the regions are defined by the equilibrium pitching position. Regardless of the geometry of the prism and flow condition the dominant oscillation frequency resulted as being close to the natural frequency of the small-amplitude pendulum-like oscillation.
