Static Recrystallization Behavior of a Nitrogen Controlled Z2CN19-10 Austenitic Stainless Steel

In order to increase the hot workability and provide proper hot forming parameters for nitrogen controlled Z2CN19-10 austenitic stainless steel, the static recrystallization behavior was investigated by double-pass hot compression tests in the temperature range of 950–1100°C, initial grain size of 72μm–152μm, and the strain rates of 0.01, 0.1, 1, and 5 s−1. The tests were conducted with inter-pass times varying between 1 and 100 s after achieving a pass strain of 0.05, 0.1, 0.15 and 0.2 in the first pass on a Gleeble-1500 thermo-mechanical simulator. The static recrystallization fraction has been predicted by the 2 % offset stress method and verified by metallographic observations. The metallographic results indicate the crystallized grains generate at the cross of the prior austenite grain boundary and grow up. Also the kinetics of static recrystallization behavior for Z2CN19-10 steel are proposed. Experimental results show that the volume fraction of static recrystallization increases with the increase of deformation temperature, strain rates, pass strain and interval time, while it decreases with the increase of initial grain size. According to the present experimental results, the activation energy (Q) and Avrami exponent (n) was determined as 199.02kJ/mol and 0.69. The established equations can give a reasonable estimate of the static recrystallization behavior for Z2CN19-10 steel.

Interrupted and continuous hot compression tests were performed for eutectoid steel over the temperature range of 850 to 1050 °C and while using strain rates of 0.001, 0.01, 0.1, and 1 s−1. The interrupted tests were carried out to characterize the kinetics of static recrystallization(SRX) and determinate the interpass time conditions that are required for initiation and propagation of dynamic recrystallization (DRX), while considering that the material does not contain microalloying elements additions for the recrystallization delay. Continuous testing was used to investigate the evolution of the austenite grain size that results from DRX. The results indicate that carbon content accelerates the SRX rate. This effect was observed when the retardation of recrystallization due to a decrease in deformation temperature from 1050 to 850 °C was only about one order of magnitude. The expected decelerate effect on the SRX rate when the initial grain size increases from 86 to 387 µm was not significant for this material. Although the strain parameter has a strong influence on SRX rate, in contrast to a lesser degree of strain rate, both of the effects are nearly independent of the chemical composition. The calculated maximum interpass times that are compatible with DRCR (Dynamic Recrystallization Controlled Rolling), for relatively low strain rates, suggest that the onset and maintaining of the DRX is possible. However, while using the empirical equations that were developed in the present work to estimate the maximum times for high strain rates, such as those observed in the wire and rod mills, indicate that the DRX start is feasible, but maintaining this mechanism for 5% softening in each pass after peak strain is not possible.

SUS316L austenitic stainless steel was subjected to severe plastic deformation (SPD) by the method of high pressure torsion (HPT). From a fully austenitic matrix (γ), HPT resulted in phase transformation from g®a¢. The largest volume fraction of 70% a¢ was obtained at 0.2 revolutions per minute (rpm) while was limited to 3% at 5rpm. Pre-straining of g by HPT at 5rpm decreases the volume fraction of a¢ obtained by HPT at 0.2rpm. By HPT at 5rpm, a¢®g reverse transformation was observed for a¢ produced by HPT at 0.2rpm.

The martensite induced in three types of austenitic stainless steel, which indicate the different stability of the austenitic phase (γ), were estimated by the resistivity measured during the tensile deformation or compressive deformation at the temperatures 77, 187 and 293 K. The resistivity curves were strongly dependent on the deformation mode. The volume fraction of the martensite (α’) was also affected by the deformation mode. The ε phase, which is the precursor of the martensite and is induced from the commencement of the deformation, decreased the resistivity. However, lots of defects generated by the deformation-induced martensite increased the resistivity. The experimental facts and the results shown by the modified parallelepiped model suggested a complicated transformation process depending on each deformation mode. The results shown by the model also suggested a linear relation between the resistivity and the martensite volume at the region of the martensite formation. The fact denoted that the resistivity is mostly not controlled by the austenite, ε phase and martensite, but by the defects induced due to the deformation-induced martensite.

The present work concerns the simulation of metallurgical evolutions in 3D multi-pass forming processes. In this context, the analyzed problem is twofold. One point refers to the management of the microstructure evolution during each pass or each inter-pass period and the other point concerns the management of the multi-pass aspects (different grain categories, data structure). In this framework, a model is developed and deals with both aspects. The model considers the microstructure as a composite made of a given (discretized) number of phases which have their own specific properties. The grain size distribution and the recrystallized volume fraction distribution of the different phases evolve continuously during a pass or inter-pass period. With this approach it is possible to deal with the heterogeneity of the microstructure and its evolution in multi-pass conditions. Both dynamic and static recrystallization phenomena are taken into account, with typical Avrami-type equations. The present model is implemented in the Finite Element code FORGE2005®. 3D numerical simulation results for a multi-pass process are presented.

There are various definitions of damage variables from the existing damage models. The calculated damage value by the current methods still could not well correspond to the actual damage value. Therefore, it is necessary to establish a damage evolution model corresponding to the actual damage evolution. In this paper, a strain rate-sensitive isotropic damage model for plain concrete is proposed to describe its nonlinear behavior. Cyclic uniaxial compression tests were conducted on concrete samples at three strain rates of 10−3s−1, 10−4s−1, and 10−5s−1, respectively, and ultrasonic wave measurements were made at specified strain values during the loading progress. A damage variable was defined using the secant and initial moduli, and concrete damage evolution was then studied using the experimental results of the cyclic uniaxial compression tests conducted at the different strain rates. A viscoelastic stress-strain relationship, which considered the proposed damage evolution model, was presented according to the principles of irreversible thermodynamics. The model results agreed well with the experiment and indicated that the proposed damage evolution model can accurately characterize the development of macroscopic mechanical weakening of concrete. A damage-coupled viscoelastic constitutive relationship of concrete was recommended. It was concluded that the model could not only characterize the stress-strain response of materials under one-dimensional compressive load but also truly reflect the degradation law of the macromechanical properties of materials. The proposed damage model will advance the understanding of the failure process of concrete materials.
