Bioengineering: A History With a Future

Bioengineering is a technological miracle of health care and future health hope. From the entrepreneurial contributions of William Kolff with the original handmade dialysis machine to the application of the x-ray to medical diagnostics and treatment, biomedical pioneers brought technology to medical care, often at great personal risk. Few can conceive the magnitude of the impact of technology on our ability to return the sick and disabled to function. The “simple” steel and plastic hip implant is a technological wonder. The human is the most demanding of systems to be repaired by technology. The stress levels, cycle loading, chemical degradation and even biological rejection are without precedent in engineering application. Reliability is expected to be near 100%. Psychological and cosmetic compatibility are severe constraints. The current quality of life of many (if not most) of us is dependent upon technology, and forefront technology at that. The dentist no longer hurts and our teeth last longer. Numerous “replacements” are cosmetically acceptable. Medical diagnosties are everywhere, but have a long way to go. Emergency medicine is high-tech. The wonders of bioengineering are in our present and in our future. It is informative to review our bioengineering heritage from early orthopedics (splints, peg legs and crutches), through mobility facilitation (wheelchairs) and internal repair (aortic patches and arterial replacement) to modern diagnostics (MRI) and organ replacement (artificial hearts, kidneys, etc.). A recent renewed interest in biomedical devices paralleling the decoding of the genome and the proposed genetic future portends what Dr. Francis Fukuyama of Johns Hopkins called “Our Post Human Future.” We will explore our historical pathway to what we will call “our better human future through bioengineering.”

This article discusses the relationship between students' honest behavior and science and technology from the perspective of science and technology. In the era of advanced science and technology, what strategies should schools take to prevent students' academic integrity. According to what reasons students choose to achieve higher academic achievement through academic misconduct, different methods are proposed to prevent students from academic misconduct. From the psychological point of view of three ways, education policy and high-tech means will effectively prevent cheating, so as to create a fair and just education environment.

The details of the impact of exports on economic growth have been one of the most important topics in the literature. Numerous studies asserted that open economies grow faster than the closed ones because of the effect of the exports on GDP and increase of productivity and efficiency through foreign competition. Concurrently, these studies indicated that there are strong correlation exists between exports and economic growth. On the other hand, high share of production of technology in today's economies is the key for sustainable and high rates of growth and the relationship between technology exports and economic growth has been a topic of interest among economists. Many studies in the literature published on export-led hypothesis in recent years but only few studies addressed the technological issues. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to examine the impact of technology exports on economic growth of selected OECD countries using dynamic panel method. We established the model by using the yearly data of 2003-2015 periods for selected OECD countries provided by OECD.Stat. As a conclusion, it is revealed that technology exports have positive and statistically significant impact on economic growth. These results implied that high-tech exports led to growth in selected OECD countries. These results suggested that promoting the production of technology is one the drivers of the economic growth.

Abstract The impact of technology in the field of defense is often analyzed in terms of the quality and quantity of the tasks provided, another issue being how man and machine can collaborate in order to make the right choices while maintaining the human autonomy. This dilemma affects the workplace all over the world, from small businesses to large multinational corporations from households to and nation states. The development of military strategies is increasingly disrupted by artificial intelligence-based technologies that accelerate automation systems and processes. From weapon systems to so-called high-tech portable devices – digital equipment innovations are benefitting the armed forces, from logistics and strategic decision-making to training and combat action. It is not certain where these changes will lead to, but our future in this increasingly technology-dependent world will be largely determined by the social, political and economic decisions we are making today.
