Relative Torsional Vibration Analysis for Crankshaft

Abstract Crankshaft torsional vibration characteristics have been studied, more often based on the results of measurement at a pulley, rather than in relation to a pulley. The results of the measurement at a pulley, however, include crankshaft torsion assuming that a crankshaft is elastic, as well as rotational speed changes due to cylinder pressure fluctuation assuming that a crankshaft is rigid. The authors recommend that relative torsional amplitude should be used in evaluating torsional vibration characteristics, rather than torsional amplitude at a pulley.

In this study, the torsional vibration analysis of a rotating tapered sandwich beam with a magnetorheological elastomer core has been investigated. The magnetorheological elastomer material is used as a constrained damping layer embedded between two elastic constraining skins in order to improve the vibrational behavior of the sandwich beam. The three layers of the sandwich beam have rectangular cross-sections with symmetric arrangement. The problem formulation is set up based on the torsional theory of rectangular laminated plates. The assumed modes method and the Lagrange equations are used to derive the governing equations of motion of the system. The validity of the presented formulation is confirmed through comparison of the obtained results with those available in the literature. A detailed parametric study is carried out to investigate the effects of applied magnetic field, tapering ratios, magnetorheological elastomer layer thickness, rotating speed, hub radius, and setting angle on the free vibration characteristics of the sandwich beam. The results show that magnetic field intensity, magnetorheological elastomer layer thickness, and tapering ratio have significant influences on the torsional vibrating characteristics of the sandwich beam, and the effects of rotating speed and hub radius are considerable. The setting angle has no substantial effect on the torsional vibration characteristics.

AbstractIn recent years, studies on the development of new and advanced composite materials have been increasing. Among these new technological products, Fiber Metal Laminates (FML), and hybrid structures made of aluminium, carbon, glass or aramid fiber, are preferred especially in the aircraft industry due to their high performance. Therefore, free vibration analysis is necessary for the design process of such structures. In this study, the vibration characteristics of FML for clamped-free boundary conditions were investigated experimentally and numerically. Firstly, numerical results were obtained using Finite Element Method (FEM) and then these results were compared with the experimental results. It was seen that the numerical results were in good agreement with the experimental results. As the theoretical model was justified, the effects of various parameters such as number of layers, fiber orientations, and aluminium layer thickness on the in-plane vibration characteristics of the FML straight beam were analysed using FEM. Thus, most important parameters affecting the vibration characteristics of the hybrid structures were determined.

A modified Fourier–Ritz method is developed for the flexural and in-plane vibration analysis of plates with two rectangular cutouts with arbitrary boundary conditions, aiming to provide a unified solving process for cases that the plate has various locations or sizes of cutout, and different kinds of boundary conditions. Under the current framework, modifying the position of the cutout or the boundary conditions of the plate is just as changing the geometric parameters of the plate, and there is no need to change the solution procedures. The arbitrary boundary conditions can be obtained by setting the stiffness constant of the boundary springs which are fixed uniformly along the edges of the plate at proper values. The strain and kinetic energy functions of a plate with rectangular cutout are derived in detail. The convergence and accuracy of the present method are demonstrated by comparing the present results with those obtained from the FEM software. In this paper, free in-plane and flexural vibration characteristics of the plate with rectangular cutout under general boundary conditions are studied. From the results, it can be found that the geometric parameters and positions of the cutout and the boundary conditions of the plate will obviously influence the natural vibration characteristics of the structures.

In certain rotor systems, bending-torsion coupled resonance occurs when the rotational speed Ω (= 2π Ωrps) is equal to the sum/difference of the bending natural frequency ωb (= 2π fb) and torsional natural frequency ωθ(= 2πfθ). This coupling effect is due to an unbalance in the rotor. In order to clarify this phenomenon, an equation was derived for the motion of the bending-torsion coupled 2 DOF system, and this coupled resonance was verified by numerical simulations. In stability analyses of an undamped model, unstable rotational speed ranges were found to exist at about Ωrps = fb + fθ. The conditions for stability were also derived from an analysis of a damped model. In rotational simulations, bending-torsion coupled resonance vibration was found to occur at Ωrps = fb − fθ and fb + fθ. In addition, confirmation of this resonance phenomenon was shown by an experiment. When the rotor was excited in the horizontal direction at bending natural frequency, large torsional vibration appeared. On the other hand, when the rotor was excited by torsion at torsional natural frequency, large bending vibration appeared. Therefore, bending-torsion coupled resonance was confirmed.
