Developing Method

Using pure oxygen in blast furnace is a developing method in blast furnace in order to lower the emission of waste gases. Numerical simulation has been applied to analyze the combustion process of co-injection of natural gas (NG) and pulverized coal (PC) in a blast furnace while the blast is pure oxygen gas. The effect of injection NG and blast flow rate on the coal and coke combustion processes is examined. The predicted results provide a better understanding of reactions inside blast furnace.

A blast furnace is a reaction vessel in which iron ore is converted to molten iron. High rate pulverized coal injection (PCI) into a blast furnace (BF) is an existing process that is known to decrease the amount of coke in the ironmaking process. Natural gas co-injection with pulverized coal increases the burnout and devolatilization rates of pulverized coal. Also, hydrogen produced from natural gas combustion is a powerful reducing agent of iron (III) oxide, releasing pure iron that trickles down and is eventually removed through the taphole. Due to the inherent complexity of the blast furnace ironmaking process, numerical simulation can prove to be quite difficult. This paper describes a three step methodology for modeling blast furnace combustion, and its application to a furnace in operation at USSC Hamilton Works.

In the combustion process of pulverized coal injection into blast furnace, the chlorine goes into the unburned pulverized coal is about 17%, the chlorine in the unburned coal keeps original state; The chlorine goes into the blast furnace gas is about 83%, and these chlorine stay as Hcl gas. Changes in air temperature and oxygen rate had no significant effect on the decomposition of chlorine in coal, resulting the rate of Cl into the blast furnace gas is difficult to increase significantly.

Abstract This paper describes the process of developing a simplified methodology for furnace aerodynamics during the development or modernization of combustion schemes with direct-flow burners. This technique is based on the use of numerical modeling of air movement and turbulence phenomena in the furnace volume and allows for a relatively short period of time to analyze a large number of options for the burners and nozzles location. This is its advantage in comparison with the use of experimental modeling or numerical simulation with combustion when analyzing a variety of schemes. The model was developed on the basis of validated results of combustion processes numerical simulation in the K-50 boiler furnace. The paper presents the results of calculations performed for several variants of the simplified methodology. For further use, the option that best corresponds to full-scale studies taking into account the fuel combustion process has been selected. The main states of the methodology are formulated.

In 2019, according to the technological assignment of the Iron and Steel Institute (ISI), the reconstruction of the blast furnace (BF) No. 3 of PJSC «AZOVSTAL IRON & STEEL WORKS» was carried out for the long-term energy-efficient production of pig iron with using pulverized coal (PCI) up to 180 kg/t with a change in the profile according to the technological task of ISI. The design of the BF No. 3 profile corresponds to the best world solutions for furnaces efficiently working with pulverized coal, and the furnace was equipped with five mathematical models of ISI («Horn», «Mine», «Heat losses», «Loading», «Slag»). Specialists of ISI developed recommendations and carried out technological support for the operation of BF No.3, which made it possible to increase the removal of pig iron from the design 2.1 t/m3 to 2.27 t/m3 and achieved the best indicators in the blast furnace workshop in terms of coke and equivalent fuel consumption by increasing the productivity of the burden system, using a rational burden loading matrix, using a rational pressure drop in the furnace, which allows the maximum use of the power of the blower machine, forcing the furnace with technical oxygen and other measures. Using the heat power model of I.D. Semikin was made a comparative analysis of the best for six months indicators of thermal performance and technical and economic indicators of BF №3 of PJSC «AZOVSTAL IRON & STEEL WORKS», with a volume of 1800 m3 before (work with natural gas) and after major repairs (work with pulverized coal and with natural gas). Using the exergy method of analysis based on the results of calculating heat and power balances, a comparative analysis of changes in the energy efficiency and environmental indicators of BF No. 3 before and after its major repairs was carried out. It shown the expediency of integrated mastering of operating modes and modernization of the blast furnace for long-term and energy-efficient operation with pulverized coal. It disclosed the mechanism for improving the technical and economic indicators of work after major repairs by changing the heat and power conditions of the blast furnace. Its shown Improvement of exergy efficiency factor and environmental performance of BF No. 3 after major repairs.

The aim of the work is to study the effect of pulverized coal (PCI) on the energy indicators of the technological system of steel production «blast furnace-oxygen converter». The analysis of energy use in the technological system for the best actual periods of operation of the blast furnace (BF) using only natural gas, pulverized coal and co-injection of pulverized coal with natural gas is performed. It is shown that the technology of using PCI improves technical and economic indicators and has a positive effect on the distribution of exergic flows, exergic efficiency and environmental indicators in the system «blast furnace-oxygen converter». Comparative heat and energy and exergy analysis of actual pulverized coal consumption in the amount of 135 kg/t of pig iron compared to blowing only natural gas in the amount of 35 m3/t of pig iron showed that pulverized coal leads to a decrease in coke consumption by ~ 25% due to pulverized pulverized coal. An exergetic analysis of the predicted converter heats showed that the injection of pulverized coal to the pulpwood leads to a decrease in the total exergy supplied by ~7%, and in the case of co-application of pulverized coal with natural gas, the exergy decreases by ~ 2%. Analysis of the exergy balance of converter melting showed that a change in the consumption of pulverized coal and natural gas in the blast furnace production slightly affects the change in the exergic efficiency (up to 0.4%). In general, it is shown that the technology of using PCI improves technical and economic indicators and positively affects the distribution of exergic flows, exergic efficiency and environmental indicators in the blast furnace – oxygen converter system.
