Angle-of-Attack Effects on Counter-Rotating Propellers at Take-Off

Due to their potential for significant fuel consumption savings, Counter-Rotating Open Rotors (CRORs) are currently being considered as an alternative to high-bypass turbofans. When CRORs are mounted on an aircraft, several ‘installation effects’ arise which are not present when the engine is operated in isolation. This paper investigates how flow features arising from one such effect — the angle-of-attack of the engine centre-line relative to the oncoming flow — can influence the design of CROR engines. Three-dimensional full-annulus unsteady CFD simulations are used to predict the time-varying flow field experienced by each rotor and emphasis is put on the interaction of the front-rotor wake and tip vortex with the rear-rotor. A parametric study is presented that quantifies the rotor-rotor interaction as a function of the angle-of-attack. It is shown that angle-of-attack operation significantly changes the flow field and the unsteady lift on both rotors. In particular, a frequency analysis shows that the unsteady lift exhibits sidebands around the rotor-rotor interaction frequencies. Further, a non-linear increase in the total rear-rotor tip unsteadiness is observed for moderate and high angles-of-attack. The results presented in this paper demonstrate that common techniques used to mitigate CROR noise, such as modifying the rotor-rotor axial spacing and rear-rotor crop, can not be applied correctly unless angle-of-attack effects are taken into account.

The present contribution addresses the aero-thermal experimental and computational study of a trapezoidal cross-section model simulating a trailing edge cooling cavity with one rib-roughened wall. The flow is fed through tilted slots on one side wall and exits through straight slots on the opposite side wall. The flow field aerodynamics is investigated in part I of the paper. The reference Reynolds number is defined at the entrance of the test section and set at 67500 for all the experiments. A qualitative flow model is deduced from surface-streamline flow visualizations. Two-dimensional Particle Image Velocimetry measurements are performed in several planes around mid-span of the channel and recombined to visualize and quantify three-dimensional flow features. The jets issued from the tilted slots are characterized and the jet-rib interaction is analyzed. Attention is drawn to the motion of the flow deflected by the rib-roughened wall and impinging on the opposite smooth wall. The experimental results are compared with the numerical predictions obtained from the finite volume, RANS solver CEDRE.

AbstractA canonical study is developed to investigate the unsteady interactions of a streamwise-oriented vortex impinging upon a finite surface using high-fidelity simulation. As a model problem, an analytically defined vortex superimposed on a free stream is convected towards an aspect-ratio-six ($\mathit{AR}=6$) plate oriented at an angle of ${\it\alpha}=4^{\circ }$ and Reynolds number of $\mathit{Re}=20\,000$ in order to characterize the unsteady modes of interaction resulting from different spanwise positions of the incoming vortex. Outboard, tip-aligned and inboard positioning are shown to produce three distinct flow regimes: when the vortex is positioned outboard of, but in close proximity to, the wingtip, it pairs with the tip vortex to form a dipole that propels itself away from the plate through mutual induction, and also leads to an enhancement of the tip vortex. When the incoming vortex is aligned with the wingtip, the tip vortex is initially strengthened by the proximity of the incident vortex, but both structures attenuate into the wake as instabilities arise in the pair’s feeding sheets from the entrainment of opposite-signed vorticity into either structure. Finally, when the incident vortex is positioned inboard of the wingtip, the vortex bifurcates in the time-mean sense with portions convecting above and below the wing, and the tip vortex is mostly suppressed. The time-mean bifurcation is actually a result of an unsteady spiralling instability in the vortex core that reorients the vortex as it impacts the leading edge, pinches off, and alternately attaches to either side of the wing. The increased effective angle of attack inboard of impingement enhances the three-dimensional recirculation region created by the separated boundary layer off the leading edge which draws fluid from the incident vortex inboard and diminishes its impact on the outboard section of the wing. The slight but remaining downwash present outboard of impingement reduces the effective angle of attack in that region, resulting in a small separation bubble on either side of the wing in the time-mean solution, effectively unloading the tip outboard of impingement and suppressing the tip vortex. All incident vortex positions provide substantial increases in the wing’s lift-to-drag ratio; however, significant sustained rolling moments also result. As the vortex is brought inboard, the rolling moment diminishes and eventually switches sign as the reduced outboard loading balances the augmented sectional lift inboard of impingement.

In Sweden, the dam-safety guidelines call for an overhaul of many existing bottom outlets. During the opening of an outlet gate, understanding the transient air-water flow is essential for its safe operation, especially under submerged tailwater conditions. Three-dimensional CFD simulations are undertaken to examine air-water flow behaviors at both free and submerged outflows. The gate, hoisted by wire ropes and powered by AC, opens at a constant speed. A mesh is adapted to follow the gate movement. At the free outflow, the CFD simulations and model tests agree well in terms of outlet discharge capacity. Larger air vents lead to more air supply; the increment becomes, however, limited if the vent area is larger than 10 m2. At the submerged outflow, a hydraulic jump builds up in the conduit when the gate reaches approximately 45% of its full opening. The discharge is affected by the tailwater and slightly by the flow with the hydraulic jump. The flow features strong turbulent mixing of air and water, with build-up and break-up of air pockets and collisions of defragmented water bodies. The air demand rate is several times as much as required by steady-state hydraulic jump with free surface.

This paper presents the results of three-dimensional, unsteady, Improved Delayed Detached Eddy Simulations of an oscillating and a stable hydraulic jump at Froude numbers of 3.8 and 8.5, respectively. The different types of oscillations characterised in a hydraulic jump are analysed by evaluating the instantaneous flow field. The instability caused by the flapping wall-jet type flow in an oscillating jump is distinct compared to the jump-toe fluctuations caused by the spanwise vortices in the shear layer of a stable jump. These flow features are accurately captured by the simulations and are presented with pertinent discussions. The near-bed vortical structures in an oscillating jump is extracted and analysed using the λ2 criterion.

AbstractThe three-dimensional structure of incompressible flow in a narrow, open rectangular cavity in a flat plate was investigated with a focus on the flow topology of the time-averaged flow. The ratio of cavity length (in the direction of the flow) to width to depth was $l{: }w{: }d= 6{: }2{: }1$. Experimental surface pressure data (in air) and particle image velocimetry data (in water) were obtained at low speed with free-stream Reynolds numbers of ${\mathit{Re}}_{l} = 3. 4\times 1{0}^{5} $ in air and ${\mathit{Re}}_{l} = 4. 3\times 1{0}^{4} $ in water. The experimental results show that the three-dimensional cavity flow is of the ‘open’ type, with an overall flow structure that bears some similarity to the structure observed in nominally two-dimensional cavities, but with a high degree of three-dimensionality both in the flow near the walls and in the unsteady behaviour. The defining features of an open-type cavity flow include a shear layer that traverses the entire cavity opening ultimately impinging on the back surface of the cavity, and a large recirculation zone within the cavity itself. Other flow features that have been identified in the current study include two vortices at the back of the cavity, of which one is barely visible, a weak vortex at the front of the cavity, and a pair of counter-rotating streamwise vortices along the sides of the cavity near the cavity opening. These vortices are generally symmetric about the cavity centre-plane. However, the discovery of a single tornado vortex, located near the cavity centreline at the front of the cavity, indicated that the flow within the cavity is asymmetric. It is postulated that the observed asymmetry in the time-averaged flow field is due to the asymmetry in the instantaneous flow field, which switches between two extremes at large time scales.

A ceiling fan is the predominating comfort provider in tropical regions worldwide. It consists of an assembly of an electric motor with 3–4 blades suspended from the ceiling of a room. Despite its simplicity and widespread use, the flow induced by a ceiling fan in a closed room has not been investigated, and sub-optimal designs are in wide use. There is vast potential for energy conservation and improved comfort by developing optimized fan designs. This work develops a fundamental understanding of the flow characteristics of a ceiling operating inside a closed room. Using smoke from thick incense sticks, the flow field created by the ceiling fan is visualized. In most regions, the flow is periodic and three-dimensional. Vortices are seen to be attached to the blade tip and hub, which reduces downward flow and increases energy consumption. Only the middle 75% of blade actually pushes the air downwards, and the comfort region is limited to a cylinder directly under the blades; velocities in this region were measured with a vane anemometer. Winglets and spikes attached to the blade tip disrupted the tip vortex, and increased downflow by about 13% without any increase in power consumption.

The present paper is the second part of a two-part paper focused on the design and the analysis of an optimized rotor blade for a geared open rotor engine. This part is focused on the experimental investigation of the three-dimensional unsteady flow field at the exit plane of a rotor row installed in a large scale single-stage low speed research turbine. The investigation is aimed at in depth characterizing the wake-boundary layer and the vortex-vortex interaction processes induced by the rotor-stator relative motion. Measurements have been carried out at a typical aeroengine cruise condition Reynolds number. The rotor blade aerodynamic loadings at different blade spans have been measured. A five-hole probe has been used to assess the row efficiency and detailed hot-wire phase-locked ensemble-averaged data have been analyzed to characterize the three-dimensional time-dependent flow field at the rotor exit plane. Results clearly highlight a significant distortion of the rotor blade wake and tip vortex during the migration of the high turbulence regions (wake and secondary flows) associated with the upstream stator. The unsteady interaction between the stator secondary flows and the rotor passage vortex provokes a time dependent movement of the low momentum area at the hub surface, sensibly modifying the penetration of the rotor secondary flows in an incoming stator wake passage period. The comparison of deterministic and random velocity fluctuations also allows the distinction between the structures generated by the stator and those due to the rotor.

The present study deals with a detailed experimental investigation of the turbulent flow inside a rib-roughened turbine blade cooling channel. The measurements are carried out in a stationary straight channel with high blockage ribs installed on one wall. The main objective is to enhance the understanding and deepen the analysis of this complex flow field with the help of highly resolved particle image velocimetry measurements. A quasi-three-dimensional view of the flow field is achieved, allowing the identification of the main time-averaged coherent structures. The combined analysis of the present aerodynamic results with available heat transfer data emphasizes the role of the mean and fluctuating flow features in the heat transfer process. In particular, the stream wise/normal to the wall component of the Reynolds stress tensor is shown to be strictly related to the heat transfer rate on the channel surfaces. A correlation to estimate the heat transfer field from the aerodynamic data is presented for the high blockage rib roughened channel flow.

Three-dimensional structures of the vortical flow field in a propeller fan with a shroud covering only the rear region of its rotor tip have been investigated by experimental analysis using laser Doppler velocimetry (LDV) measurements and by numerical analysis using a large eddy simulation (LES) in Part I of the present study. The propeller fan has a very complicated vortical flow field near the rotor tip compared with axial fan and compressor rotors. It is found that three vortex structures are formed near the rotor tip: the tip vortex, the leading edge separation vortex, and the tip leakage vortex. The tip vortex is so strong that it dominates the flow field near the tip. Its formation starts from the blade tip suction side near the midchord. Even at the design condition the tip vortex convects nearly in the tangential direction, thus impinging on the pressure surface of the adjacent blade. The leading edge separation vortex develops close along the tip suction surface and disappears in the rear region of the rotor passage. The tip leakage vortex is so weak that it does not affect the flow field in the rotor.
