This paper describes the growing need for a novel approach to a Condition Monitoring Database Management System (CMDBMS). Through the study of a condition monitoring case and the examination of commonly used maintenance management systems, the needs of this system have been identified. From the case study, it has been found that to obtain maintenance information a CMDBMS requires capabilities including data organization, data processing and data collection information. However, existing systems, which are used in the maintenance community only have some of the capabilities and hence provide limited assistance for maintenance activity. Therefore, a novel approach to a CMDBMS has been suggested to meet the needs of condition monitoring data management.

The interchange between different database management systems and statistical packages may be hampered by different formats for data structure. The programs FIXFREE and GENHDR convert database files into different formats: ASCII fixed format to comma-delimited free ASCII format and vice versa. The programs may be used either as stand alone programs or as procedures within a database management system. The programs also contain a procedure to import comma-delimited free ASCII formatted files into database management systems, e.g., DBase III, DBase IV, or the different versions of FOXPRO. The programs are written in TURBO PASCAL (Version 6.0).

Palavras-chave: Sistemas de Informação Geográfica, Geoprocessamento, Geografia, Bancos de Dados, Computação.ABSTRACT Database management systems can be design with an extended database in order to store and retrieve metadata based on abstract objects. The target of this paper is a better understanding of basic requirements to this database management system operates satisfactorily, above all to test at best a model to store, analysing your performance, in front of several types of existing geographic data. The aim of this paper is to show some needs to know developed systems performance, or in developing, which purpose is digital geographic metadata management. Keywords: Geographic Information Systems, Geoprocessing, Geography, Databases, Computation.

For a long time, hard disks were the only technology that could store enough information to hold a database and offered random access at the same time. Therefore, conventional database management systems were tuned to take this technology to the maximum. But in recent years, main memories have become cheaper and grown to a point that for some fields of application it allows one to keep the whole information of a database in main memory and therefore speed up operation. This article focuses on the differences in conventional databases that affect both performance and internal structure of a database management system.
