The paper presents the design and development of a new robotized assembly system of optical backplanes in high-capacity ICT (Information and Communication Technology) apparatus, mainly used for switching stations and distribution networks. The optical backplane solution consists of several optical fiber ribbons positioned on a planar backplane according to an innovative and optimized full-mesh layout where the overall optical interconnection is partialized into a plurality of different independent sub-circuits. Each optical interconnection sub-circuit consists of optical fiber ribbons with standardized optical and mechanical interfaces and customized components that have to be carefully and precisely assembled in order to achieve connections with low optical power losses. The paper describes the method and the main devices and tools conceived for the automatic assembly of optical interconnection sub-circuits, highlighting the critical aspects and the proposed solutions towards the automatized assembly of the whole optical backplane.

Fraunhofer diffraction pattern from a circular aperture with the diameter of 10µm was observed using an optical fiber microprobe. The optical fiber microprobe started to detect optical power when the distance between the probe and the circular aperture was more than 292µm. When the probe was moved in a lateral motion, the light propagation showed a Bessel function profile. When the optical fiber microprobe was moved from 293µm to 309µm from the centre of the circular aperture in a transverse motion, the power detected was not consistent with a continuation of maxima and minima due to the effect of light propagation from the circular aperture. We also observed that the distance between the probe and the centre of the circular aperture was directly proportional with the radius of focused spot and inversely proportional with the Fresnel number.

The weak direct current (DC) signals detected and converted by the photodetector are output to the mobile phone by voltage/frequency switching, and the signals are processed by the mobile phone APP and audio conversion module. The photodetector is equipped with the automatic switching function to design an optical power meter and detect weak signals. Meanwhile, the optical cable identification system is analyzed and combined with the optical power meter to generate an optical fiber sensing network to improve the weak alternating current (AC) signal detection. This network needs data fusion in sensor nodes’ data collection. The cluster routing protocol is introduced and combined with the back propagation neural network (BPNN) to propose a method suitable for this photoelectric transmission and improve the information fusion and accuracy. In the experiment, the optical power meter is output in gears first, and the output waveforms are normal. The photodiode’s optical power is adjusted to obtain different frequencies on the oscilloscope. In the proposed optical fiber sensing network, weak AC signals are amplified significantly, and different optical fiber lines can be distinguished in the optical cables. The proposed information collection method can reduce network communication and node energy consumption.

<p>Distributed generation (DG) is an important issue for distribution networks due to the improvement in power losses, but the location and size of generators could be a difficult task for exact techniques. The metaheuristic techniques have become a better option to determine good solutions and in this paper the application of a bat-inspired algorithm (BA) to a problem of location and size of distributed generation in radial distribution systems is presented. A comparison between particle swarm optimization (PSO) and BA was made in the 33-node and 69-node test feeders, using as scenarios the change in active and reactive power, and the number of generators. PSO and BA found good results for small number and capacities of generators, but BA obtained better results for difficult problems and converged faster for all scenarios. The maximum active power injections to reduce power losses in the distribution networks were found for the five scenarios.</p>

There are three dominant noise mechanisms in an analog optical fiber link. These are shot noise that is proportional to the mean optical power, relative intensity noise (RIN) that is proportional to the square of the instanteaneous optical power. This report describes an adaptive noise cancellation of these dominant noise processes that persist an analog optical fiber link. The performance of an analog optical fiber link is analyzed by taking the effects of these noise processes. Analytical and simulation results show that some improvement in signal to noise ratio (SNR) and this filter is effective to remove noise adaptively from the optical fiber link.

<span lang="EN-US">The integration of the photovoltaic (PV) solar systems into distribution networks has brought new challenges to the network planners. One of the most interesting is to prevent the impacts of the PV intermittent character on the steady state system operation conditions. This work is aimed to investigate such effect on voltage performance, conventional generator daily behavior and automatic voltage regulator operation. Simulations were conducted on a 33-bus IEEE radial distribution power system. In order to provide a reliable study, a real PV power profile was considered. Obtained results over a period of 24 hours revealed that the PV integration contributes to an enhancement of the overall voltage profile, a considerable saving in the total amount of the produced active power and a reduction of power losses. However, the PV intermittent character causes significant transformation in buses voltages daily profiles as well as changes in production plan. To sum up, this paper reports the alterations, caused by the PV source intermittence, which must be taken into consideration by the distribution networks planners to maintain the overall network parameters within safe operating condition</span>
