In the present study, we propose an innovative autofocusing (AF) voice coil motor (VCM) actuator to replace the traditional AF VCM actuators with springs for smart phone camera modules. In the proposed electromagnetic structure, the magnetic pre-compression force between the two guide rods and permanent magnet is used to replace the restoring resilience force of the two springs in the traditional AF VCM actuators. The proposed AF VCM actuator is characterized numerically using the simulation analysis of commercial software Infolytica MagNet and then verified experimentally using a laboratory-built prototype. The experimental results presented in this study show compared to traditional AF VCM actuator, the proposed AF VCM actuator has excellent AF performance to be able to replace the traditional AF VCM actuators. As a result, the proposed device provides a promising solution for smart phone camera modules or industrial applications.

The use of unmanned aerial robots has increased exponentially in recent years, and the relevance of industrial applications in environments with degraded satellite signals is rising. This article presents a solution for the 3D localization of aerial robots in such environments. In order to truly use these versatile platforms for added-value cases in these scenarios, a high level of reliability is required. Hence, the proposed solution is based on a probabilistic approach that makes use of a 3D laser scanner, radio sensors, a previously built map of the environment and input odometry, to obtain pose estimations that are computed onboard the aerial platform. Experimental results show the feasibility of the approach in terms of accuracy, robustness and computational efficiency.

This paper presents the practical results of the design analysis, commissioning, identification, sensor calibration, and tuning of an active magnetic bearing (AMB) control system for a laboratory gas blower. The presented step-by-step procedures, including modeling and disturbance analysis for different design choices, are necessary to reach the full potential of the prototype in research and industrial applications. The key results include estimation of radial and axial disturbance forces caused by the permanent magnet (PM) rotor and a discussion on differences between the unbalance forces resulting from the PM motor and the induction motor in the AMB rotor system.

The fatigue life of turbine housing is an important index to measure the reliability of a radial turbocharger. The increase in turbine inlet temperatures in the last few years has resulted in a decrease in the fatigue life of turbine housing. A simulation method and experimental verification are required to predict the life of a turbine housing in the early design and development process precisely. The temperature field distribution of the turbine housing is calculated using the steady-state bidirectional coupled conjugate heat transfer method. Next, the temperature field results are considered as the boundary for calculating the turbine housing temperature and thermomechanical strain, and then, the thermomechanical strain of the turbine housing is determined. Infrared and digital image correlations are used to measure the turbine housing surface temperature and total thermomechanical strain. Compared to the numerical solution, the maximum temperature RMS (Root Mean Square) error of the monitoring point in the monitoring area is only 3.5%; the maximum strain RMS error reached 11%. Experimental results of temperature field test and strain measurement test show that the testing temperature and total strain results are approximately equal to the solution of the numerical simulation. Based on the comparison between the numerical calculation and experimental results, the numerical simulation and test results were found to be in good agreement. The experimental and simulation results of this method can be used as the temperature and strain (stress) boundaries for subsequent thermomechanical fatigue (TMF) simulation analysis of the turbine housing.

Owing to the superior properties and stable operation, the Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor (PMSM) is preferably used in wide industrial applications. But, the stability of motor is found to be dependent on its initial operating condition, showing the chaotic characteristic. Therefore, this paper addresses the chaos control of PMSM by developing four simple but effective controllers, which are mathematically designed by using the principle of Lyapunov’s method for asymptotic global stability. A comparative performance assessment has been carried out for the developed controllers in terms of settling time and peak over shoot. Furthermore, the concept of conventional proportional-integration type controller has been extended to develop two more controllers for chaos control of PMSM. Numerical simulation has been carried out in Matlab environment for performance evaluation of developed controllers. The obtained analytical results have been validated through experimental implementation in real time environment on Multisim/Ultiboard platform.

This paper describes an analysis of torque characteristics of a noncontact spinning system using linearly actuated magnets. This noncontact spinning system spins the suspended object (here is an iron ball) without contact by the remanent magnetization and the linear movement of four permanent magnets. In this paper, the remanent magnetization point is modeled, and the rotational torque of this mechanism is calculated by IEM (Integral Element Method) analysis. The rotational torque is also measured using a measurement device with strain gauges. According to the IEM analysis results and the experimental results, the rotational torque characteristics of the noncontact spinning system are discussed.

In nowadays the pneumatic controlled systems are widely used in industrial applications where valves must be operated, where there is a fire ignition risk, or in different automation systems where a positioning action is desired. The paper presents the experimental results of a pneumatic actuator controlled by a proportional control valve. The goal of the paper is to compare the experimental results with the numerical simulation results and to improve the mathematical model associated with the experiment.

Linear switched reluctance actuators are a focus of study for many applications because of their simple and robust electromagnetic structure, despite their lower thrust force density when compared with linear permanent magnet synchronous motors. This chapter deals with incremental linear actuator have switched reluctance structure. First, the different topologies of linear incremental actuators are mentioned. Furthermore, a special interest is focused on the switched reluctance linear actuator then the operating principal is explained. In addition, an analytical model of the proposed actuator is developed without taking account of the saturation in magnetic circuit. Finally, the control techniques that can be applied to the studied actuator are presented.
