Effect of Gear Tooth Crack on Spur Gear Dynamic Response by Simulation

Geared transmission systems are widely applied to transmit power, torque and high rotational speed, and as well as change the direction of rotational motion. Their performances and efficiencies depend greatly on the integrity of the gear structure. Hence, health monitoring and fault detection in geared systems have gained much attention. Often, as a result of inappropriate operating conditions, application of heavy load beyond the designed capacity or end of fatigue life, gear faults frequently occur in practice. When fault happens, gear meshing characteristics, including mesh stiffness that is one of the important dynamic parameters, can be affected. This sudden change in mesh stiffness can induce shock vibration as the faulty gear tooth passes through the engagement zone. In this study, a finite element model representing the crack at the tooth root of a spur gear is developed. The theory is applied to investigate the effect of different crack sizes and the corresponding change in mesh stiffness. In addition, a lumped parameter model is formulated to examine the effect of tooth fault on gear dynamic response.

Some tooth profile geometric features, such as root fillet area, flank modification and wear are of nonnegligible importance for gear mesh stiffness. However, due to complexity of analytical description, their influence on mesh stiffness was always ignored by existing research works. The present work derives analytical formulations for time-varying gear mesh stiffness by using parametric equations of flank profile. Tooth geometry formulas based upon a rack-type tool are derived following Litvin's vector approach. The root fillet area and tooth profile deviations can therefore be fully considered for spur gear tooth stiffness evaluation. The influence of gear fillet determined by tip fillet radius of the rack-type tool is quantified parametrically. The proposed model is validated to be effective by comparing with a finite element model. Further, the model is applied to investigate the stiffness variations produced by tooth addendum modification, tooth profile nonuniform wear and modification.

Considering tip relief, a finite element model of a spur gear pair in mesh is established by ANSYS software. Time-varying mesh stiffness under different amounts of tip relief is calculated based on the finite element model. Then, a finite element model of a geared rotor system is developed by MATLAB software considering the effects of time-varying mesh stiffness and constant load torque. Emphasis is given to the effects of tip relief on the lateral–torsional coupling vibration responses of the system. The results show that as the amount of tip relief increases, the saltation of time-varying mesh stiffness reduces at the position of approach action and transition mesh region from the single tooth to double tooth. A number of primary resonances and some super-harmonic of gears 1 and 2 are excited by time-varying mesh stiffness in amplitude frequency responses. As the amount of tip relief increases, some super-harmonic responses change due to the variation in the higher frequency components of time-varying mesh stiffness. After tip relief, the vibration and meshing force decrease obviously at lower mesh frequency range except at some resonance frequencies; however, tip relief is not effective in reducing the vibration at higher mesh frequency range. The amplitude fluctuation of the vibration acceleration reduces evidently after considering tip relief, which is not remarkable with the increase of meshing frequency.

This work mainly aims to explore the actual load, fillet and contact stresses induced during a mesh cycle in a spur gear tooth. As the mesh stiffness differs at different contact points along the path of contact, it significantly affects the load sharing between the simultaneously meshed contact pairs hence stresses. Comparative study has been made between existing symmetric spur gear pair used in light motor vehicle gear box and asymmetric spur gear. Finite element multi pair contact model has been used to explore the load sharing behavior and related stresses in this work.

Planetary gears are parametrically excited by the time-varying mesh stiffness that fluctuates as the number of gear tooth pairs in contact changes during gear rotation. At resonance, the resulting vibration causes tooth separation leading to nonlinear effects such as jump phenomena and subharmonic resonance. This work examines the nonlinear dynamics of planetary gears by numerical and analytical methods over the meaningful mesh frequency ranges. Concise, closed-form approximations for the dynamic response are obtained by perturbation analysis. The analytical solutions give insight into the nonlinear dynamics and the impact of system parameters on dynamic response. Correlation between the amplitude of response and external torque demonstrates that tooth separation occurs even under large torque. The harmonic balance method with arclength continuation confirms the perturbation solutions. The accuracy of the analytical and harmonic balance solutions is evaluated by parallel finite element and numerical integration simulations.

The thermal balance state of high-speed and heavy-load gear transmission system has an important influence on the performance and failure of gear transmission and the design of gear lubrication system. Excessive surface temperature of gear teeth is the main cause of gluing failure of gear contact surface. To investigate the gear heat distribution in meshing process and discuss the effect of thermal conduction on heat distribution,a finite element model of spur gear is presented in the paper which can represent general involute spur gears. And a simulation approach is use to calculate gear heat distribution in meshing process. By comparing with theoretical calculation, the correctness of the simulation method is verified, and the heat distribution of spur gear under the condition of heat conduction is further analyzed. The difference between the calculation results with heat conduction and without heat conduction is compared. The research has certain reference significance for dry gear hobbing and the same type of thermal-structural coupling analysis.

The gear meshing is a very complicated process due to the nonlinear behaviors during the teeth contact. It is necessary to build a reliable model to simulate gear meshing process which can consider geometry and boundary conditions nonlinear behavior in gear tooth contact analysis. This paper propose a 3D finite element model to simulate the meshing process of a pair of spur gears, and then carry out the gear tooth contact analysis with the consideration of nonlinear behaviors. The results and relevant discussions will indicate and explain some significant phenomena of the gear tooth contact characteristics in gear meshing process.

In order to conduct a further investigation of the causes of damages in large longitudinal slope of asphalt road pavement under actual heavy load, a three-dimensional finite element model was established by ANSYS finite element software. Through applying impulsive load in this model, the variation of the strains of large longitudinal slope of asphalt road pavement under different conditions was obtained and the influence of gradient on the dynamic response of large longitudinal slope of asphalt road pavement was analyzed. The results show that the strains of large longitudinal slope of asphalt road pavement increased with the increase of load times. Flexure tensile strain and shear strain were similitude with the change tendency of the increase of overloading rate but the data increased significantly. The transversal shear strain increased with the increase of gradient.

The calculation of time-varying meshing stiffness caused by the alternate contacting of the gear tooth is an essential prerequisite to obtain real and effective nonlinear dynamic characteristics of the transmission system, so that the significance of which cannot be overemphasized. Accordingly, this work proposes an improved method to get meshing stiffness with taking fillet-foundation and gear rim deflection into consideration. Compared to the traditional potential energy method, the proposed method has more superior accuracy and performance, and its effectiveness has been further verified by the finite element analytical model. After that, an ideal eight degree of freedoms (DOFs) dynamic model of one stage mass-spring-damper involute spur gear, including lateral and torsional motions, is established to study the dynamic characteristics. Due to the complexity of the gear system operating conditions, we also investigate the influence of various parameters including hub bore radius, transmitting load, and rotation speed on dynamic features, especially in heavy-load and high-speed conditions. From the results, it can be concluded that these parameters will play a prominent role in the spur gear pair dynamic behaviors, providing a certain guidance for gear design.
