Geometric Synthesis of Spatial Compliant Mechanisms Using Three-Dimensional Wide Curves

A three-dimensional wide curve is a spatial curve with variable cross sections. This paper introduces a geometric synthesis method for spatial compliant mechanisms by using three-dimensional wide curves. In this paper, every connection in a spatial compliant mechanism is represented by a three-dimensional wide curve and the whole spatial compliant mechanism is modeled as a set of connected three-dimensional wide curves. The geometric synthesis of a spatial compliant mechanism is considered as the generation and optimal selection of control parameters of the corresponding three-dimensional parametric wide curves. The deformation and performance of spatial compliant mechanisms are evaluated by the isoparametric degenerate-continuum nonlinear finite element procedure. The problem-dependent objectives are optimized and the practical constraints are imposed during the optimization process. The optimization problem is solved by the MATLAB constrained nonlinear programming algorithm. The effectiveness of the proposed geometric procedures is verified by the demonstrated examples.

The performance of multimaterial compliant mechanisms and structures is enhanced by integrating multiple materials into one-piece configurations. This paper introduces a geometric modeling method for spatial multimaterial compliant mechanisms and structures by using 3D multilayer wide curves. Based on the introduced modeling method, a geometric synthesis approach is proposed. In this paper, every connection in a spatial multimaterial compliant mechanism or structure is represented by a 3D multilayer wide curve and the whole compliant mechanism or structure is modeled as a set of connected wide curves. The geometric modeling and synthesis are considered as the generation and optimization of the control parameters of the corresponding 3D multilayer wide curves. How do we assess the capability of a compliant mechanism of given topology and shape? The kinetoelastostatic maps proposed in this paper help answer this question. These maps are drawn in 2D using two non-dimensional quantities, one capturing the nonlinear static response and the other the geometry, material, and applied forces. Geometrically nonlinear finite element analysis is used to create the maps for compliant mechanisms consisting of slender beams. In addition to the topology and shape, the overall proportions and the proportions of the cross-sections of the beam segments are kept fixed for a map. The finite region of the map is parameterized using a non-dimensional quantity defined as the slenderness ratio. The shape and size of the map and the parameterized curves inside it indicate the complete kinetoelastostatic capability of the corresponding compliant mechanism of given topology, shape, and fixed proportions. Static responses considered in this paper include input/output displacement, geometric amplification, mechanical advantage, maximum stress, etc. The maps can be used to compare mechanisms, to choose a suitable mechanism for an application, or re-design as may be needed. The usefulness of the non-dimensional maps is presented with multiple applications of different variety. Non-dimensional portrayal of snap-through mechanisms is one such example. The effect of the shape of the cross-section of the beam segments and the role of different segments in the mechanism as well as extension to 3D compliant mechanisms, the cases of multiple inputs and outputs, and moment loads are also explained. The effects of disproportionate changes on the maps are also analyzed.

The paper introduces the circular cross-section corner-filleted flexure hinges as connectors in three-dimensional compliant mechanism applications. Compliance factors are derived analytically for bending, axial loading and torsion. A circular cross-section corner-filleted flexure hinge belongs to a domain delimited by the cylinder (no fillet) and the right circular cross-section flexure hinge (maximum fillet radius). The analytical model predictions are confirmed by finite element simulation and experimental measurements. The circular cross-section corner-filleted flexure hinges are characterized in terms of their compliance, precision of rotation and stress levels.

Abstract Compliant mechanism synthesis is an automated design procedure which allows the designer to systematically generate the optimal structural form for a particular set of loading and motion requirements. The synthesis method presented here solves a particular class of design problems, where the compliant mechanism is required to be both flexible to meet motion requirements, and stiff to withstand external loads. A two-part problem formulation is proposed using mutual and strain energies, whereby the conflicting design objectives of required flexibility and stiffness are handled via multi-criteria optimization. The resulting compliant mechanism topologies satisfy both kinematic and structural requirements. The problem formulation is implemented using a truss ground structure and SLP algorithm. Several design examples are presented to illustrate this method.

An automated design synthesis method is developed to design an airfoil with a reconfigurable shape, which can change from one type of geometry to another. A design synthesis method using unit truss approach and particle swarm optimization is presented. In the unit truss approach, unit truss is used as a new unit cell for mechanics analysis of cellular structures, including lightweight structures and compliant mechanisms. Using unit truss approach, axial forces, bending, torsion, nonlinearity, and buckling in structures can be considered. It provides good analysis accuracy and computational efficiency. A synthesis method using unit truss approach integrated with particle swarm optimization is developed to systematically design adaptive cellular structures, in particular, compliant mechanisms discussed in this paper. As an example study, the authors realize the design synthesis of a compliant mechanism that enables an entire closed-loop airfoil profile to change shape from NACA 23015 to FX60-126 for the desired morphing wing. The nonlinear behavior of compliant mechanisms under large deformation is considered. The resulting design is validated by testing its robustness and considering nonlinearity.
