Experiments were conducted to determine the effects of buoyancy and Coriolis forces on heat transfer in turbine blade internal coolant passages. The experiments were conducted with a large scale, multi–pass, smooth–wall heat transfer model with both radially inward and outward flow. An analysis of the governing flow equations showed that four parameters influence the heat transfer in rotating passages (coolant–to–wall temperature ratio, Rossby number, Reynolds number and radius–to–passage hydraulic diameter ratio). These four parameters were varied over ranges which are typical of advanced gas turbine engine operating conditions. It was found that both Coriolis and buoyancy effects must be considered in turbine blade cooling designs and that the effect of rotation on the heat transfer coefficients was markedly different depending on the flow direction. Local heat transfer coefficients were found to decrease by as much as 60 percent and increase by 250 percent from no rotation levels. Comparisons with a pioneering stationary vertical tube buoyancy experiment showed reasonably good agreement. Correlation of the data is achieved employing dimensionless parameters derived from the governing flow equations.

The heat transfer coefficients on surfaces, where the heat transfer decreased with rotation and buoyancy, decreased to as low as 40 percent of the value without rotation. However, the maximum values of the heat transfer coefficients with high rotation were only slightly above the highest levels previously obtained with the smooth wall model. It was concluded that (1) both Coriolis and buoyancy effects must be considered in turbine blade cooling designs with trip strips, (2) the effects of rotation are markedly different depending upon the flow direction, and (3) the heat transfer with skewed trip strips is less sensitive to buoyancy than the heat transfer in models with either smooth walls or normal trips. Therefore, skewed trip strips rather than normal trip strips are recommended and geometry-specific tests will be required for accurate design information.

Internal convective cooling is used to maintain acceptable gas turbine rotor blade temperatures. The heat transfer from the blade coolant passage walls is governed by forced convection, Coriolis forces and buoyance due to wall and coolant temperature differences. Currently little data is available to designers regarding the combined effects of these three parameters. To obtain required data, a rotating heat transfer facility was developed for experiments with large scale models and run at rotation and flow parameters typical of current gas turbine operating conditions. Analysis of the equations of motion showed that the perinent nondimensional parameters were Reynolds number, Rossby number, the difference in wall fluid and bulk fluid density and geometric ratios. The models were instrumented to measure average heat transfer rates on the coolant passage wall elements, and with pressure taps for friction data. An initial set of experiments have been conducted with rough wall geometries, typical of those used in blades. Results from the rotating experiments showed large heat transfer coefficient increases and decreases on the coolant passage leading and trailing surfaces compared to nonrotating heat transfer coefficients. The heat transfer was shown to be a function of inward or outward flow direction and Rossby number for the experiments conducted.

A model for predicting heat transfer during condensation of refrigerant R134a in horizontal microchannels is presented. The thermal amplification technique is used to measure condensation heat transfer coefficients accurately over small increments of refrigerant quality across the vapor-liquid dome (0<x<1). A combination of a high flow rate closed loop primary coolant and a low flow rate open loop secondary coolant ensures the accurate measurement of the small heat duties in these microchannels and the deduction of condensation heat transfer coefficients from measured UA values. Measurements were conducted for three circular microchannels (0.506<Dh<1.524mm) over the mass flux range 150<G<750kg∕m2s. Results from previous work by the authors on condensation flow mechanisms in microchannel geometries were used to interpret the results based on the applicable flow regimes. The heat transfer model is based on the approach originally developed by Traviss, D. P., Rohsenow, W. M., and Baron, A. B., 1973, “Forced-Convection Condensation Inside Tubes: A Heat Transfer Equation For Condenser Design,” ASHRAE Trans., 79(1), pp. 157–165 and Moser, K. W., Webb, R. L., and Na, B., 1998, “A New Equivalent Reynolds Number Model for Condensation in Smooth Tubes,” ASME, J. Heat Transfer, 120(2), pp. 410–417. The multiple-flow-regime model of Garimella, S., Agarwal, A., and Killion, J. D., 2005, “Condensation Pressure Drop in Circular Microchannels,” Heat Transfer Eng., 26(3), pp. 1–8 for predicting condensation pressure drops in microchannels is used to predict the pertinent interfacial shear stresses required in this heat transfer model. The resulting heat transfer model predicts 86% of the data within ±20%.

Experimental investigations were performed to measure the detailed heat transfer coefficients and film cooling effectiveness on the squealer tip of a gas turbine blade in a five-bladed linear cascade. The blade was a two-dimensional model of a first stage gas turbine rotor blade with a profile of the GE-E3 aircraft gas turbine engine rotor blade. The test blade had a squealer (recessed) tip with a 4.22% recess. The blade model was equipped with a single row of film cooling holes on the pressure side near the tip region and the tip surface along the camber line. Hue detection based transient liquid crystals technique was used to measure heat transfer coefficients and film cooling effectiveness. All measurements were done for the three tip gap clearances of 1.0%, 1.5%, and 2.5% of blade span at the two blowing ratios of 1.0 and 2.0. The Reynolds number based on cascade exit velocity and axial chord length was 1.1×106 and the total turning angle of the blade was 97.9 deg. The overall pressure ratio was 1.2 and the inlet and exit Mach numbers were 0.25 and 0.59, respectively. The turbulence intensity level at the cascade inlet was 9.7%. Results showed that the overall heat transfer coefficients increased with increasing tip gap clearance, but decreased with increasing blowing ratio. However, the overall film cooling effectiveness increased with increasing blowing ratio. Results also showed that the overall film cooling effectiveness increased but heat transfer coefficients decreased for the squealer tip when compared to the plane tip at the same tip gap clearance and blowing ratio conditions.
