Tuned Sloshing Dampers With Large Rectangular Core Penetrations

Abstract Space restrictions at the top of tall buildings may necessitate using tuned sloshing dampers (TSD) tanks with large rectangular penetrations to accommodate the structural core of the tower. A finite element model is employed to predict the natural sloshing frequencies and mode shapes of liquid sloshing in a rectangular tank with a rectangular core. Equivalent mechanical properties are determined to predict the sloshing response. Frequency response predictions of wave heights, sloshing forces, and energy-dissipation per cycle agree with results from shake table testing conducted on a rectangular tank with a rectangular core. Energy dissipation due to flow around the core adds considerable damping to the liquid and is proportional to the response velocity-squared. Nonlinear coupling among sloshing modes results in multiple peaks in the frequency response plots near the fundamental resonant frequency. An interior core with a broad dimension in one direction substantially reduces the fundamental sloshing frequency and equivalent mechanical mass in the perpendicular direction; however, the fundamental sloshing frequency and equivalent mechanical mass in the parallel direction are only influenced marginally. Large rectangular cores reduce the proportion of the total water mass that is effective in controlling tower motion. A TSD with a rectangular penetrating core may enable a TSD option to be considered for the control of a tall building in cases where a traditional rectangular TSD is infeasible.

Abstract This paper presents a method for the updating of the damping matrix of a linear dynamic system. For this dynamic study, it is presumed that the characteristic mass and stiffness matrices are perfectly known thanks to the updating of the experimental and calculed frequencies and mode shapes as from a finit element model. Furthermore, it is accepted that damping has only a minor effect on the frequencies and mode shapes of a structure (a hypothesis that has been verified for structures with low damping). It is proposed to adjuste the coefficients of the [D] hysteretic damping matrix as from the superposition of the experimental and analytical Frequency Response Functions (FRF). The frequencies and mode shapes are extracted from the solutions of the caracteristic equation (3) resulting from the classic dynamic equation. An analytical FRF is calculed and then used to establish the sensitivity matrix, translating the influence of the updating parameters on the FRF. To update the [D] matrix, we use a non-linear weighted least squares estimation.

ABSTRACT Tire engineers are interested in predicting rolling resistance using tools such as numerical simulation and tests. When a car is driven along, its tires are subjected to repeated deformation, leading to energy dissipation as heat. Each point of a loaded tire is deformed as the tire completes a revolution. Most energy dissipation comes from the cyclic loading of the tire, which causes the rolling resistance in addition to the friction force in the contact patch between the tire and road. Rolling resistance mainly depends on the dissipation of viscoelastic energy of the rubber materials used to manufacture the tires. To obtain a good rolling resistance, the calculation method of the tire finite element model must take into account temperature changes. It is mandatory to calibrate all of the rubber compounds of the tire at different temperatures and strain frequencies. Linear viscoelasticity is used to model the materials properties and is found to be a suitable approach to tackle energy dissipation due to hysteresis for rolling resistance calculation.

Bluff structures in the form of tall buildings, smokestacks, control towers, bridges, etc., are susceptible to vortex resonance and galloping type of instabilities. One approach to vibration control of such systems is through energy dissipation using sloshing liquid dampers. In this paper we focus on enhancing the energy dissipation efficiency of a rectangular liquid damper through the introduction of two-dimensional obstacles as well as floating particles. The investigation has two phases. To begin with, a parametric free vibration study aimed at the optimization of the obstacle geometry is undertaken to arrive at configurations promising increased damping ratio and hence higher energy dissipation. The study is complemented by an extensive wind tunnel test program, which substantiates the effectiveness of this class of damper in suppressing both vortex resonance and galloping type of instabilities. Simplicity of design, ease of implementation, minimal maintenance, reliability as well as high efficiency make such liquid dampers quite attractive for real-life applications.

The contact between the tool flank wear land and wavy surface of workpiece causes energy dissipation which influences the tool vibration and chatter stability during a dynamic machining process. The process damping coefficient is affected by cutting conditions and constitutive property of workpiece material. This paper presents a finite element model of dynamic orthogonal cutting process with tool round edge and flank wear land. The process damping coefficient is identified based on the energy dissipation principle. The simulated results are experimentally validated.

Abstract Damage reduces the flexural stiffness of a structure, thereby altering its dynamic response, specifically the natural frequency, damping values, and the mode shapes associated with each natural frequency. Considerable effort has been put into obtaining a correlation between the changes in these parameters and the location and amount of the damage in beam structures. Most numerical research employed elements with reduced beam dimensions or material properties such as modulus of elasticity to simulate damage in the beam. This approach to damage simulation neglects the non-linear effect that a crack has on the different modes of vibration and their corresponding natural frequencies. In this paper, finite element modeling techniques are utilized to directly represent an embedded crack. The results of the dynamic analysis are then compared to the results of the dynamic analysis of the reduced modulus finite element model. Different modal parameters including both mode shape displacement and mode shape curvature are investigated to determine the most sensitive indicator of damage and its location.

Abstract A frequency-domain technique to extract the normal mode from the measurement data for highly coupled structures is developed. The relation between the complex frequency response functions and the normal frequency response functions is derived. An algorithm is developed to calculate the normal modes from the complex frequency response functions. In this algorithm, only the magnitude and phase data at the undamped natural frequencies are utilized to extract the normal mode shapes. In addition, the developed technique is independent of the damping types. It is only dependent on the model of analysis. Two experimental examples are employed to illustrate the applicability of the technique. The effects due to different measurement locations are addressed. The results indicate that this technique can successfully extract the normal modes from the noisy frequency response functions of a highly coupled incomplete system.

The deflection of the beam estimated from modal flexibility matrix (MFM) indirectly is used in structural damage detection due to the fact that deflection is less sensitive to experimental noise than the element in MFM. However, the requirement for mass-normalized mode shapes (MMSs) with a high spatial resolution and the difficulty in damage quantification restricts the practicability of MFM-based deflection damage detection. A damage detection method using the deflections estimated from MFM is proposed for beam structures. The MMSs of beams are identified by using a parked vehicle. The MFM is then formulated to estimate the positive-bending-inspection-load (PBIL) caused deflection. The change of deflection curvature (CDC) is defined as a damage index to localize damage. The relationship between the damage severity and the deflection curvatures is further investigated and a damage quantification approach is proposed accordingly. Numerical and experimental examples indicated that the presented approach can detect damages with adequate accuracy at the cost of limited number of sensors. No finite element model (FEM) is required during the whole detection process.

In-plane free vibrations of an isotropic, elastic annular disk constrained at some points on the inner and outer boundaries are investigated. The presented study is relevant to various practical problems including disks clamped by bolts along the inner and outer edges or the railway wheel vibrations. The boundary characteristic orthogonal polynomials are employed in the Rayleigh-Ritz method to obtain the frequency parameters and the associated mode shapes. The boundary characteristic orthogonal polynomials are generated for the free boundary conditions of the disk while artificial springs are used to realize clamped conditions at discrete points. The frequency parameters for different point constraint conditions are evaluated and compared with those computed from a finite element model to demonstrate the validity of the proposed method. The computed mode shapes are presented for a disk with different point constraints at the inner and outer boundaries to demonstrate the free in-plane vibration behavior of the disk. Results show that addition of point supports causes some of the modes to split into two different frequencies with different mode shapes. The effects of different orientations of multiple point supports on the frequency parameters and mode shapes are also discussed.

Resonance inspection uses the natural acoustic resonances of a part to identify anomalous parts. Modern instrumentation can measure the many resonant frequencies rapidly and accurately. Sophisticated sorting algorithms trained on sets of good and anomalous parts can rapidly and reliably inspect and sort parts. This paper aims at using finite-element-based modal analysis to put resonance inspection on a more quantitative basis. A production-level automotive steering knuckle is used as the example part for our study. First, the resonance frequency spectra for the knuckle are measured with two different experimental techniques. Next, scanning laser vibrometry is used to determine the mode shape corresponding to each resonance. The material properties including anisotropy are next measured to high accuracy using resonance spectroscopy on cuboids cut from the part. Then, finite element model (FEM) of the knuckle is generated by meshing the actual part geometry obtained with computed tomography (CT). The resonance frequencies and mode shapes are next predicted with a natural frequency extraction analysis after extensive mesh size sensitivity study. The good comparison between the predicted and the experimentally measured resonance spectra indicate that finite-element-based modal analyses have the potential to be a powerful tool in shortening the training process and improving the accuracy of the resonance inspection process for a complex, production level part. The finite element based analysis can also provide a means to computationally test the sensitivity of the frequencies to various possible defects such as porosity or oxide inclusions especially in the high stress regions that the part will experience in service.
