Multi-Objective Shape Optimization on the Inlet Pipe of a Vertical Inline Pump

Vertical inline pump is a single-stage single-suction centrifugal pump with a bent pipe before the impeller, which is usually used where installation space is a constraint. In this paper, with three objective functions of efficiencies at 0.5 Qd, 1.0 Qd, and 1.5 Qd, a multi-objective optimization on the inlet pipe of a vertical inline pump was proposed based on genetic algorithm with artificial neural network (ANN). In order to describe the shape of inlet pipe, the fifth-order and third-order Bezier curves were adopted to fit the mid curve and the trend of parameters of cross sections, respectively. Considering the real installation and computation complexity, 11 variables were finally used in this optimization. Latin hypercube sampling (LHS) was adopted to generate 149 sample cases, which were solved by CFD code ANSYS cfx 18.0. The calculation results and design variables were utilized to train ANNs, and these surrogate models were solved for the optimum design using multi-objective genetic algorithm (MOGA). The results showed the following: (1) There was a great agreement between numerical results and experimental results; (2) The ANNs could accurately fit the objective functions and variables. The maximum deviations of efficiencies at 0.5 Qd, 1.0 Qd, and 1.5 Qd, between predicted values and computational values, were 1.94%, 2.35%, and 0.40%; (3) The shape of inlet pipe has great influence on the efficiency at part-load and design conditions while the influence is slight at overload condition; (4) Three optimized cases were selected and the maximum increase of the efficiency at 0.5 Qd, 1.0 Qd, and 1.5 Qd was 4.96%, 2.45, and 0.79%, respectively; and (5) The velocity distributions of outflow in the inlet pipe of the three optimized cases were more uniform than the original one.

In recent decades, the use of genetic algorithm (GA) for optimization of structures has been highly attractive in the study of concrete and steel structures aiming at weight optimization. However, it has been challenging for multi-objective optimization to determine the trade-off between objective functions and to obtain the Pareto-front for reinforced concrete (RC) and steel structures. Among different methods introduced for multi-objective optimization based on genetic algorithms, Non-Dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm II (NSGA II) is one of the most popular algorithms. In this paper, multi-objective optimization of RC moment resisting frame structures considering two objective functions of cost and displacement are introduced and examined. Three design models are optimized using the NSGA-II algorithm. Evaluation of optimal solutions and the algorithm process are discussed in details. Sections of beams and columns are considered as design variables and the specifications of the American Concrete Institute (ACI) are employed as the design constraints. Pareto-fronts for the objective space have been obtained for RC frame models of four, eight and twelve floors. The results indicate smooth Pareto-fronts and prove the speed and accuracy of the method.

Although an annular stepped fin can produce better cooling effect in comparison to an annular disk fin, it is yet to be studied in detail. In the present work, one-dimensional heat transfer in a two-stepped rectangular cross-sectional annular fin with constant base temperature and variable thermal conductivity is modeled as a multi-objective optimization problem. Taking cross-sectional half-thicknesses and outer radii of the two fin steps as design variables, an attempt is made to obtain the efficient fin geometry primarily by simultaneously maximizing the heat transfer rate and minimizing the fin volume. For further assessment of the fin performance, three more objective functions are studied, which are minimization of the fin surface area and maximization of the fin efficiency and effectiveness. Evaluating the heat transfer rate through the hybrid spline difference method, the well-known multi-objective genetic algorithm, namely, nondominated sorting genetic algorithm II (NSGA-II), is employed for approximating the Pareto-optimal front containing a set of tradeoff solutions in terms of different combinations of the considered five objective functions. The Pareto-optimal sensitivity is also analyzed for studying the influences of the design variables on the objective functions. As an outcome, it can be concluded that the proposed procedure would give an open choice to designers to lead to a practical stepped fin configuration.

In order to save the space for installation, a bent pipe is adopted for inlet of vertical inline pump. In this paper, to improve the performance of inlet pipe, a multi-objective optimization on the inlet pipe is proposed based on Genetic Algorithm (GA) and Artificial Neural Network (ANN) model. A 5th-order Bezier curve is applied to fit the mean line of the inlet pipe and 3rd-order Bezier curves are used for depicting the variation trend of shape of sections. As the outlet of inlet pipe is fixed, 11 design variables are utilized for optimization, and the three optimization objectives are efficiency, head and standard deviation of velocity at the outlet of inlet pipe. To get the surrogate model, 149 different models obtained from Latin hypercube sampling are solved with numerical simulation. The results showed the numerical simulation has a great agreement with the experiment. Artificial neural network can accurately fit the target functions and design variables. The deviation of efficiency, head and standard deviation of velocity between predicted value and actual value were 0.26%, 0.05m and −0.27m/s, respectively. After optimization, an improvement on flow condition and a decrease of standard deviation of velocity before impeller were obtained. The efficiency and head were improved by 1.16% and 0.2m, respectively.

In this paper, a multi-objective optimization of a transonic axial fan to enhance aerodynamic stability has been conducted using three-dimensional Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes equations, surrogate modeling and multi-objective genetic algorithm (MOGA). Hub radius and first rotor chord length of the axial fan were chosen as design variables for the optimization. Peak adiabatic efficiency of the axial fan and stall margin at 60% of the designed rotational speed, were used as objective functions. Latin Hypercube Sampling (LHS) method was used to select design points in the design space. The objective functions were formulated using the response surface approximation (RSA) model. Three LHS samples with different distributions of twelve design points were tested to study their effects on prediction accuracy of the RSA model and optimization results. MOGA with the RSA models based on the best LHS sample, was used to obtain the Pareto-optimal front. As a result of optimization, an improvement of 17.2% in the stall margin at 60% of the designed rotational speed and 2.96% in peak adiabatic efficiency were obtained compared to the reference design. It was also found that distribution of the design points generated by LHS affects the effectiveness of the surrogate-based optimization.

Abstract Since tires carry out many functions and many of them have tradeoffs, it is important to find the combination of design variables that satisfy well-balanced performance in conceptual design stage. To find a good design of tires is to solve the multi-objective design problems, i.e., inverse problems. However, due to the lack of suitable solution techniques, such problems are converted into a single-objective optimization problem before being solved. Therefore, it is difficult to find the Pareto solutions of multi-objective design problems of tires. Recently, multi-objective evolutionary algorithms have become popular in many fields to find the Pareto solutions. In this paper, we propose a design procedure to solve multi-objective design problems as the comprehensive solver of inverse problems. At first, a multi-objective genetic algorithm (MOGA) is employed to find the Pareto solutions of tire performance, which are in multi-dimensional space of objective functions. Response surface method is also used to evaluate objective functions in the optimization process and can reduce CPU time dramatically. In addition, a self-organizing map (SOM) proposed by Kohonen is used to map Pareto solutions from high-dimensional objective space onto two-dimensional space. Using SOM, design engineers see easily the Pareto solutions of tire performance and can find suitable design plans. The SOM can be considered as an inverse function that defines the relation between Pareto solutions and design variables. To demonstrate the procedure, tire tread design is conducted. The objective of design is to improve uneven wear and wear life for both the front tire and the rear tire of a passenger car. Wear performance is evaluated by finite element analysis (FEA). Response surface is obtained by the design of experiments and FEA. Using both MOGA and SOM, we obtain a map of Pareto solutions. We can find suitable design plans that satisfy well-balanced performance on the map called “multi-performance map.” It helps tire design engineers to make their decision in conceptual design stage.

Most real-world problems require the optimization of multiple objective functions simultaneously, which can conflict with each other. The environment of these problems usually involves imprecise information derived from inaccurate measurements or the variability in decision-makers’ (DMs’) judgments and beliefs, which can lead to unsatisfactory solutions. The imperfect knowledge can be present either in objective functions, restrictions, or decision-maker’s preferences. These optimization problems have been solved using various techniques such as multi-objective evolutionary algorithms (MOEAs). This paper proposes a new MOEA called NSGA-III-P (non-nominated sorting genetic algorithm III with preferences). The main characteristic of NSGA-III-P is an ordinal multi-criteria classification method for preference integration to guide the algorithm to the region of interest given by the decision-maker’s preferences. Besides, the use of interval analysis allows the expression of preferences with imprecision. The experiments contrasted several versions of the proposed method with the original NSGA-III to analyze different selective pressure induced by the DM’s preferences. In these experiments, the algorithms solved three-objectives instances of the DTLZ problem. The obtained results showed a better approximation to the region of interest for a DM when its preferences are considered.

Arriving optimal solutions is one of the important tasks in engineering design. Many real-world design optimization problems involve multiple conflicting objectives. The design variables are of continuous or discrete in nature. In general, for solving Multi Objective Optimization methods weight method is preferred. In this method, all the objective functions are converted into a single objective function by assigning suitable weights to each objective functions. The main drawback lies in the selection of proper weights. Recently, evolutionary algorithms are used to find the nondominated optimal solutions called as Pareto optimal front in a single run. In recent years, Non-dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm II (NSGA-II) finds increasing applications in solving multi objective problems comprising of conflicting objectives because of low computational requirements, elitism and parameter-less sharing approach. In this work, we propose a methodology which integrates NSGA-II and Technique for Order Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution (TOPSIS) for solving a two bar truss problem. NSGA-II searches for the Pareto set where two bar truss is evaluated in terms of minimizing the weight of the truss and minimizing the total displacement of the joint under the given load. Subsequently, TOPSIS selects the best compromise solution.

In most cases of high specific speed mixed-flow pump applications, it is necessary to satisfy more than one performance characteristic such as deign point efficiency, shut-off power/head and non-stall characteristic (no positive slope in flow-head curve). However, it is known that these performance characteristics are in relation of trade-offs. As a result, it is difficult to optimize these performance characteristics by conventional way such as trial and error approach by modifying geometrical parameters. This paper presents the results of the multi-objective optimization strategy of mixed-flow pump design by means of three dimensional inverse design approach, Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), Design of Experiments (DoE), response surface model (RSM) and Multi Objective Genetic Algorism (MOGA). The parameters to control blade loading distributions and meridional geometries for impeller and diffuser blades in inverse design were chosen as design variables of the optimization process. Pump efficiency, maximum slope in flow-head curve and shut-off power/head were selected as objective functions. Objective functions of pumps, designed by design variables specified in DoE, were evaluated by using CFD. Then, trade-off relations between objective functions were analyzed by using Pareto fronts obtained by MOGA. Some pumps which have specific performance characteristic (non-stall, low shut-off power, high efficiency etc.) designed along the Pareto front were numerically evaluated.

Purpose From the past few decades, parallel grippers are used successfully in the automation industries for performing various pick and place jobs due to their simple design, reliable nature and its economic feasibility. So, the purpose of this paperis to design a suitable gripper with appropriate design parameters for better performance in the robotic production systems. Design/methodology/approach In this paper, an enhanced multi-objective ant lion algorithm is introduced to find the optimal geometric and design variables of a parallel gripper. The considered robotic gripper systems are evaluated by considering three objective functions while satisfying eight constraint equations. The beta distribution function is introduced for generating the initial random number at the initialization phase of the proposed algorithm as a replacement of uniform distribution function. A local search algorithm, namely, achievement scalarizing function with multi-criteria decision-making technique and beta distribution are used to enhance the existing optimizer to evaluate the optimal gripper design problem. In this study, the newly proposed enhanced optimizer to obtain the optimum design condition of the design variables is called enhanced multi-objective ant lion optimizer. Findings This study aims to obtain optimal design parameters of the parallel gripper with the help of the developed algorithms. The acquired results are investigated with the past research paper conducted in that field for comparison. It is observed that the suggested method to get the best gripper arrangement and variables of the parallel gripper mechanism outperform its counterparts. The effects of the design variables are needed to be studied for a better design approach concerning the objective functions, which is achieved by sensitivity analysis. Practical implications The developed gripper is feasible to use in the assembly operation, as well as in other pick and place operations in different industries. Originality/value In this study, the problem to find the optimum design parameter (i.e. geometric parameters such as length of the link and parallel gripper joint angles) is addressed as a multi-objective optimization. The obtained results from the execution of the algorithm are evaluated using the performance indicator algorithm and a sensitivity analysis is introduced to validate the effects of the design variables. The obtained optimal parameters are used to develop a gripper prototype, which will be used for the assembly process.

A gerotor gear generation algorithm has been developed that evaluates key performance objective functions to be minimized or maximized, and then an optimization algorithm is applied to determine the best design. Because of their popularity, circular-toothed gerotors are the focus of this study, and future work can extend this procedure to other gear forms. Parametric equations defining the circular-toothed gear set have been derived and implemented. Two objective functions were used in this kinematic optimization: maximize the ratio of displacement to pump radius, which is a measure of compactness, and minimize the kinematic flow ripple, which can have a negative effect on system dynamics and could be a major source of noise. Designs were constrained to ensure drivability, so the need for additional synchronization gearing is eliminated. The NSGA-II genetic algorithm was then applied to the gear generation algorithm in modeFRONTIER, a commercial software that integrates multi-objective optimization with third-party engineering software. A clear Pareto front was identified, and a multi-criteria decision-making genetic algorithm was used to select three optimal designs with varying priorities of compactness vs low flow variation. In addition, three pumps used in industry were scaled and evaluated with the gear generation algorithm for comparison. The scaled industry pumps were all close to the Pareto curve, but the optimized designs offer a slight kinematic advantage, which demonstrates the usefulness of the proposed gerotor design method.
