Direct Experimental Measurements of Heat Transfer Coefficient Augmentation Due to Approach Flow Effects

Film cooling can have a significant effect on the heat transfer coefficient (HTC) between the overflowing freestream gas and the underlying surface. This study investigated the influence of approach flow characteristics, including the boundary layer thickness and character (laminar and turbulent), as well as the approach flow Reynolds number, on the HTC. The figure of merit for this study was the HTC augmentation, that is, the ratio of HTCs for a cooled versus uncooled surface. A heated foil surface provided a known heat flux, allowing direct measurement of HTC and augmentation. The foil was placed both upstream and downstream of the film cooling holes, in order to generate an approaching thermal boundary layer, as representative of actual engine conditions. High-resolution IR thermography provided spatially resolved HTC augmentation data. An open-literature shaped-hole design was used, known as the 7-7-7 hole, in order to compare with existing results in the literature. A variety of blowing conditions were tested from M = 0.5 to 3.0. Two elevated density ratios of DR = 1.20 and DR = 1.80 were used. The results indicated that turbulent boundary layer thickness had a modest effect on HTC augmentation, whereas a very high level of augmentation was observed for a laminar approach boundary layer. The presence of upstream heating greatly increased the HTC augmentation in the near-hole region, although these effects died out by 10–15 diameters from the holes.

The use of compound-angled shaped film cooling holes in gas turbines provides a method for cooling regions of extreme curvature on turbine blades or vanes. These configurations have received surprisingly little attention in the film cooling literature. In this study, a row of laid-back fanshaped holes based on an open-literature design, were oriented at a 45-degree compound angle to the approaching freestream flow. In this study, the influence of the approach flow boundary layer thickness and character were experimentally investigated. A trip wire and turbulence generator were used to vary the boundary layer thickness and freestream conditions from a thin laminar boundary layer flow to a fully turbulent boundary layer and freestream at the hole breakout location. Steady-state adiabatic effectiveness and heat transfer coefficient augmentation were measured using high-resolution IR thermography, which allowed the use of an elevated density ratio of DR = 1.20. The results show adiabatic effectiveness was generally lower than for axially-oriented holes of the same geometry, and that boundary layer thickness was an important parameter in predicting effectiveness of the holes. Heat transfer coefficient augmentation was highly dependent on the freestream turbulence levels as well as boundary layer thickness, and significant spatial variations were observed.

Abstract The coolant flow characteristics at the hole exits of a film-cooled blade are derived from an earlier analysis where the hole pipes and coolant plenum were also discretized. The blade chosen is the VKI rotor with three staggered rows of shower-head holes. The present analysis applies these flow characteristics at the shower-head hole exits. A multi-block three-dimensional Navier-Stokes code with Wilcox’s k-ω model is used to compute the heat transfer coefficient on the film-cooled turbine blade. A reasonably good comparison with the experimental data as well as with the more complete earlier analysis where the hole pipes and coolant plenum were also gridded is obtained. If the 1/7th power law is assumed for the coolant flow characteristics at the hole exits, considerable differences in the heat transfer coefficient on the blade surface, specially in the leading-edge region, are observed even though the span-averaged values of h match well with the experimental data. This calls for span-resolved experimental data near film-cooling holes on a blade for better validation of the code.

Abstract A number of experimental studies have been performed to study the effect of geometric and aerodynamic parameters on the film cooling performance on the flat plate and turbine blade, however, the experimental investigations on a fully-cooled turbine vane is limited, especially at different density ratios. Consequently, an experiment on a fully-cooled turbine vane with multi-row film cooling holes was carried out to investigate the effect of mass flow ratio and density ratio on the film cooling performance, in which the film cooling effectiveness and heat transfer coefficient was measured by transient liquid crystal. The mainstream inlet Reynolds number based on the inlet velocity and the true chord length is 120000 and the mainstream turbulence intensity is 15%, three mass flow ratios of 5.5%, 8.4% and 11% and two density ratios of 1.0 and 1.5 were tested. The air was selected as the mainstream, the air and carbon dioxide were independently selected as secondary flow to produce two density ratios of 1.0 and 1.5. The test vane is similar in geometry to a first stage turbine vane of a normal aeroengine. Two cavities were manufactured in the test vane to feed 18 rows of film cooling holes. Results show that with the mass flow ratio increasing for DR = 1.0 and 1.5, the film cooling effectiveness on pressure side gradually increases, however, that on the suction side gradually decreases. Generally, increased density ratio produces higher film cooling effectiveness because the injection momentum was reduced, however, the film cooling effectiveness on the suction side for DR = 1.5 is lower than that for DR = 1.0. The coolant outflow significantly enhances the surface heat transfer coefficient for 0 < S/C < 0.5 and S/C < −0.5. The heat transfer coefficient in the leading edge is less affected by the density ratio, however, the increase in density ratio reduces the heat transfer coefficient ratio in other regions, especially for large mass flow ratios.

Abstract The objective of this experimental investigation was to determine the cooling performance of a fully cooled vane with 18 rows of cylinder cooling holes. The exit Reynolds number in the wind tunnel normalized by the true chord was 500,000 with a turbulence intensity of 15%. The film cooling effectiveness and heat transfer coefficient distribution were obtained by the transient liquid crystal technology, three mass flow ratios (MFR=7.0%, 9.9%, 11%) and two density ratios (DR=1.0, 1.5) were tested. The results show that the film cooling effectiveness distribution on the suction side is more uniform and the coolant injection trajectory is much longer than that on the pressure side. As the density ratio increasing to 1.5, the more laterally uniform film cooling effectiveness contour on the pressure side is observed and the spatially averaged film cooling effectiveness is increased by 11%∼43%. For the MFR=7.0%, the coolant injection with low momentum thickens the boundary layer and reduces the heat transfer coefficient in the mid-chord region of the pressure side. Both the increased mass flow ratio and decreased density ratio result in a higher heat transfer coefficient, while do not alter the distribution trend. By calculating the heat flux ratio, the reduction in the heat flux at DR=1.5 is found to be within 20% in most areas than that of DR=1.0 on the vane surface.

In the past, heat transfer coefficient augmentation was generally measured at unit density ratio to keep measurements simple and uncertainty low. Some researchers have measured heat transfer coefficient augmentation while taking density ratio effects into account, but none have made direct temperature measurements of the wall and adiabatic wall to calculate hf/h0 at higher density ratios. This work presents results from measuring the heat transfer coefficient augmentation downstream of shaped holes with a 7° forward and lateral expansion at DR = 1.0, 1.2, and 1.5 on a flat plate using a constant heat flux surface. The results showed that the heat transfer coefficient augmentation was low while the jets were attached to the surface and increased when the jets started to separate. At DR = 1.0, hf/h0 was higher for a given blowing ratio than at DR = 1.2 and DR = 1.5. However, when velocity ratios are matched, better correspondence was found at the different density ratios. Surface contours of hf/h0 showed that the heat transfer was initially increased along the centerline of the jet, but was reduced along the centerline at distances farther downstream. The decrease along the centerline may be due to counter-rotating vortices sweeping warm air next to the heat flux plate toward the center of the jet, where they sweep upward and thicken the thermal boundary layer. This warming of the core of the coolant jet over the heated surface was confirmed with thermal field measurements.

Heat transfer coefficients were measured downstream of a row of shaped film cooling holes, as well as elliptical, diffuser, and teardrop shaped dimples, simulating depressions due to film coolant holes of different shapes. These features were placed on the suction side of a simulated gas turbine vane. The dimples were used as approximations to film cooling holes after the heat transfer levels downstream of active fan shaped film cooling holes was found to be independent of film cooling. The effects of the dimples were tested with varying approach boundary layers, freestream turbulence intensity, and Reynolds numbers. For the case of an untripped (transitional) approach boundary layer, all dimple shapes caused approximately a factor of 2 increase in heat transfer coefficient relative to the smooth baseline condition due to the dimples effectively causing boundary layer transition downstream. The exact augmentation varied depending on the dimple geometry: diffuser shapes causing the largest augmentation and teardrop shapes causing the lowest augmentation. For tripped (turbulent boundary layer) approach conditions, the dimple shapes all caused the same 20% augmentation relative to the smooth tripped baseline. The already turbulent nature of the tripped approach flow reduces the effect that the dimples have on the downstream heat transfer coefficient.
