Tooth friction is unavoidable and changes periodically in gear engagement. Friction excitation is an important excitation source of a gear transmission system. They are different than the friction coefficients of any two points on the same contact line of a helical/herringbone gear. In order to obtain the influence of the friction excitation on the dynamic response of a helical/herringbone planetary gear system, a method that uses piecewise solution and then summing them to analyze the friction force and frictional torque of tooth surfaces is proposed. Then, the friction coefficient is obtained based on the mixed elastohydrodynamic lubrication (EHL) theory. A dynamic model of a herringbone planetary gear system is established considering the friction, mesh stiffness, and meshing error excitation by the node finite element method. The influence of friction excitation on the dynamic response of the herringbone planetary gear is studied under different working conditions. The results show that friction excitation has a great influence on the vibration acceleration of the sun and planetary gear. However, the effect on the radial and tangential vibration acceleration of a planetary gear is the opposite. In addition, the friction excitation has a slight effect on the meshing force.

An interative method has been developed for analyzing dynamic loads in a light weight basic planetary gear system. The effects of fixed, semi-floating, and fully-floating sun gear conditions have been emphasized. The load dependent variable gear mesh stiffnesses were incorporated into a practical torsional dynamic model of a planetary gear system. The dynamic model consists of input and output units, shafts, and a planetary train. In this model, the sun gear has three degrees of freedom; two transverse and one rotational. The planets, ring gear, and the input and output units have one degree of freedom, (rotation) thus giving a total of nine degrees of freedoms for the basic system. The ring gear has a continuous radial support. The results indicate that the fixed sun gear arrangement with accurate or errorless gearing offers in general better performance than the floating sun gear system.

Tooth breakage is a typical failure form of wind-turbine planetary gear transmission system, it is important to study the influence of tooth breakage on vibration characteristics of planetary gear transmission system. In this paper, considering the tooth breakage defect, a lumped parameter vibration model of a planetary gear system with time-periodic mesh stiffness is established. Effects of the length and width of tooth breakage on meshing stiffness and dynamic response are discussed in detail. The relation between characteristic frequency of the tooth breakage fault and rotating speeds is pointed out. Several statistical indicators are utilized to show the influence of two parameters (length of planet tooth breakage and input speed) on the dynamic response of the system. Experiments are carried out to verify the simulation results. These results would be useful for fault diagnosis of wind turbine transmission system at different operation conditions.

Abstract In order to study the influence of friction on the nonlinear dynamic characteristics of a planetary gear system, the dynamic model of a planet gear transmission system considering mixed elastohydrodynamic lubrication (EHL) friction, time-varying meshing stiffness, backlash and comprehensive meshing error is established. The Runge–Kutta method is used to solve the dynamic differential equations, and the bifurcation and chaos characteristics of the system are analysed through the bifurcation diagram, largest lyapunov exponent (LLE), Poincaré map, phase diagram, time history curve diagram and fast fourier transform (FFT)spectrum. The results of numerical simulation show that the planetary gear system with mixed EHL friction exhibits rich bifurcation characteristics, and the system experiences short-periodic motion, long-periodic motion, quasi-periodic motion and chaotic motion. The effect of tooth surface friction on the bifurcation characteristics of the planetary gear system is more obvious at high frequency than that at low frequency. Tooth surface friction causes the system to enter chaotic motion in advance.

The dynamic response of a helicopter planetary gear system is examined over a wide range of operating speeds and torques. The analysis tool is a unique, semianalytical finite element formulation that admits precise representation of the tooth geometry and contact forces that are crucial in gear dynamics. Importantly, no a priori specification of static transmission error excitation or mesh frequency variation is required; the dynamic contact forces are evaluated internally at each time step. The calculated response shows classical resonances when a harmonic of mesh frequency coincides with a natural frequency. However, peculiar behavior occurs where resonances expected to be excited at a given speed are absent. This absence of particular modes is explained by analytical relationships that depend on the planetary configuration and mesh frequency harmonic. The torque sensitivity of the dynamic response is examined and compared to static analyses. Rotational mode response is shown to be more sensitive to input torque than translational mode response. Planter gear system is one of the critical components of various industrial transmission systems. In general, the ring gear is elastically fixed with the gearbox. The gearbox materials and their assembly relationships will affect the support stiffness of the ring gear and system vibrations. In this paper, a multi-body dynamic model for a planetary gear system with the elastic support of ring gear is developed to discuss the influence of the radial support stiffness of ring gear on the system vibrations. The planet bearings are also considered in the multi-body dynamic model. The rotational speed of the planet gear and carrier from the simulation and theoretical results are compared to validate the developed multi-body dynamic model. The influences of the radial support stiffness of the ring gear, carrier moment, and sun gear speed on the time- and frequency-domain vibrations of the planetary gear system are analyzed. The results denote that the waveform and amplitude of the time-domain vibration of the ring gear are greatly affected by the radial support stiffness of ring gear as well as the peak frequency amplitude and its sidebands. The peak frequency in the spectrum of ring gear is slightly affected by the radial support stiffness. It indicates that this study can give some guidance for the vibration control approaches for the planetary gear systems.

Backlash is a key internal excitation on the dynamic response of planetary gear transmission. After the gear transmission running for a long time under load torque, due to tooth wear accumulation, the backlash between the tooth surface of two mating gears increases, which results in a larger and irregular backlash. However, the increasing backlash generated by tooth accumulated wear is generally neglected in lots of dynamics analysis for epicyclic gear trains. In order to investigate the impact of backlash generated by tooth accumulated wear on dynamic behavior of compound planetary gear set, in this work, first a static tooth surface wear prediction model is incorporated with a dynamic iteration methodology to get the increasing backlash generated by tooth accumulated wear for one pair of mating teeth under the condition that contact ratio equals to one. Then in order to introduce the tooth accumulated wear into dynamic model of compound planetary gear set, the backlash excitation generated by tooth accumulated wear for each meshing pair in compound planetary gear set is given under the condition that contact ratio equals to one and does not equal to one. Last, in order to investigate the impact of the increasing backlash generated by tooth accumulated wear on dynamic response of compound planetary gear set, a nonlinear lumped-parameter dynamic model of compound planetary gear set is employed to describe the dynamic relationships of gear transmission under the internal excitations generated by worn profile, meshing stiffness, transmission error, and backlash. The results indicate that the introduction of the increasing backlash generated by tooth accumulated wear makes a significant influence on the bifurcation and chaotic characteristics, dynamic response in time domain, and load sharing behavior of compound planetary gear set.

Based on the lumped mass method, a torsional vibration model of the planetary gear system is established considering the nonlinear factors such as friction, time-varying meshing stiffness, backlash, and comprehensive error. The Runge–Kutta numerical method is used to analyze the motion characteristics of the system with various parameters and the influence of tooth friction on the bifurcation and chaos characteristics of the system. The numerical simulation results show that the system has rich bifurcation behavior with the excitation frequency, damping ratio, comprehensive error amplitude, load and backlash, and experiences multiple periodic motion and chaotic motion. Tooth friction makes the bifurcation behavior of the system fuzzy in the high frequency and heavy load areas, makes the chaos of the system restrained in the low-damping ratio and light load areas, advances the bifurcation point of the system in the small comprehensive error amplitude area, and makes the period window of the chaos area larger in the large-backlash area, which makes the bifurcation behavior of the system more complex.
