Heat Transfer Enhancement in Ferrofluids Flow in Micro and Macro Parallel Plate Channels: A Comparative Numerical Study

This paper presents a comparative numerical study of heat transfer enhancement in steady, laminar, hydrodynamically fully developed flow of water-based ferrofluids under no magnetic field in micro and macro parallel plate channels subjected to constant equal heat fluxes on its top and bottom, considering Brownian diffusion and thermophoresis of ferroparticles in the base fluid. While the microchannel results match very well with the experimental data for water in an equivalent microtube (Kurtoglu et al., 2014, “Experimental Study on Convective Heat Transfer Performance of Iron Oxide Based Ferrofluids in Microtubes,” ASME J. Therm. Sci. Eng. Appl., 6(3), p. 034501.), the numerically predicted enhancement factor in ferrofluids is much below that for the same microtube. A detailed parametric study points to possible inaccuracies in the experimental results of Kurtoglu et al. (2014, “Experimental Study on Convective Heat Transfer Performance of Iron Oxide Based Ferrofluids in Microtubes,” ASME J. Therm. Sci. Eng. Appl., 6(3), p. 034501.) for ferrofluids. The nanoparticle concentration profiles in the microchannel flow reveal that (a) the nanoparticle concentration at the wall increases with axial distance, (b) the wall nanoparticle concentration decreases with increasing heat flux, and (c) the concentration profile of nanoparticles is parabolic at the exit. A comparison of thermally developing flow in microchannel and macrochannel of the same length (0.025 m) indicates that the enhancement factor at the microchannel exit is 1.089 which is only marginally higher than that at the macrochannel exit in the heat flux range of 20–80 kW/m2. On the other hand, for the thermally fully developed flow in both microchannel and macrochannel of the same length (0.54 m) the maximum enhancement factor for the macrochannel is 1.7, as compared to 1.1 for the microchannel, in the heat flux range of 1–4 kW/m2.

This study investigates the influence of the heat flux and mass velocity on convective heat transfer performance of FC-72 in a rectangular channel of 20mm in width and 2 mm in height. The heated side has either a smooth surface or a pin-finned surface. The inlet fluid temperature is maintained at 30°C. The total length of the test channel is 113 mm, with a heated length of 25mm. The flow rate varies between 80 and 960 ml/min, and the heat flux sets between 18 and 50 W/cm2. The experimental results show that the controlling variable is heat flux instead of flow rate because of the boiling activities in FC-72. At a fixed flow rate, the pin-finned surface yields up to 20% higher heat transfer coefficient and greater critical heat flux than those of a smooth surface.

In this paper we reported an advanced structure, the Piranha Pin Fin (PPF), for microchannel flow boiling. Fluid flow and heat transfer performance were evaluated in detail with HFE7000 as working fluid. Surface temperature, pressure drop, heat transfer coefficient and critical heat flux (CHF) were experimentally obtained and discussed. Furthermore, microchannels with different PPF geometrical configurations were investigated. At the same time, tests for different flow conditions were conducted and analyzed. It turned out that microchannel with PPF can realize high-heat flux dissipation with reasonable pressure drop. Both flow conditions and PPF configuration played important roles for both fluid flow and heat transfer performance. This study provided useful reference for further PPF design in microchannel for flow boiling.

Flow patterns and heat transfer inside mini twisted oval tubes (TOTs) heated by constant-temperature walls are numerically investigated. Different configurations of tubes are simulated using water as the working fluid with temperature-dependent thermo-physical properties at Reynolds numbers ranging between 500 and 1100. After validating the numerical method with the published correlations and available experimental results, the performance of TOTs is compared to a smooth circular tube. The overall performance of TOTs is evaluated by investigating the thermal-hydraulic performance and the results are analyzed in terms of the field synergy principle and entropy generation. Enhanced heat transfer performance for TOTs is observed at the expense of a higher pressure drop. Additionally, the secondary flow generated by the tube-wall twist is concluded to play a critical role in the augmentation of convective heat transfer, and consequently, better heat transfer performance. It is also observed that the improvement of synergy between velocity and temperature gradient and lower irreversibility cause heat transfer enhancement for TOTs.

In the present study, the forced convective heat transfer performance of two different nanofluids, namely, Al2O3-water and CNT-water has been studied experimentally in an automobile radiator. Four different concentrations of nanofluid in the range of 0.15–1 vol. % were prepared by the additions nanoparticles into the water as base fluid. The coolant flow rate is varied in the range of 2 l/min–5 l/min. Nanocoolants exhibit enormous change in the heat transfer compared with the pure water. The heat transfer performance of CNT-water nanofluid was found to be better than Al2O3-water nanocoolant. Furthermore, the Nusselt number is found to increase with the increase in the nanoparticle concentration and nanofluid velocity.

Air jet impingement is one of the effective cooling techniques employed in micro-electronic industry. To enhance the heat transfer performance, a cooling system with air jet impingement on a finned heat sink is evaluated via the computational fluid dynamics method. A two-dimensional confined slot air impinging on a finned flat plate is modeled. The numerical model is validated by comparison of the computed Nusselt number distribution on the impingement target with published experimental results. The flow characteristics and heat transfer performance of jet impingement on both of smooth and finned heat sinks are compared. It is observed that jet impingement over finned target plate improves the cooling performance significantly. A dimensionless heat transfer enhancement factor is introduced to quantify the effect of jet flow Reynolds number on the finned surface. The effect of rectangular fin dimensions on impingement heat transfer rate is discussed in order to optimize the cooling system. Also, the computed flow and thermal fields of the air impingement system are examined to explore the physical mechanisms for heat transfer enhancement.

The heat transfer performance of fluid flowing in a microchannel was experimentally studied, to meet the requirement of extremely high heat flux removal of microelectronic devices. There were 10 parallel microchannels with rectangular cross-section in the stainless steel plate, which was covered by a glass plate to observe the fluid flowing behavior, and another heating plate made of aluminum alloy was positioned behind the microchannel. Single phase heat transfer and fluid flow downstream the microchannel experiments were conducted with both deionized water and ethanol. Besides experiments, numerical models were also set up to make a comparison with experimental results. It is found that the pressure drop increases rapidly with enlarging Reynolds number (200), especially for ethanol. With comparison, the flow resistance of pure water is smaller than ethanol. Results also show that the friction factor decreases with Reynolds number smaller than the critical value, while increases the velocity, the friction factor would like to keep little changed. We also find that the water friction factors obtained by CFD simulations in parallel microchannels are much larger than experiment results. With heat flux added to the fluid, the heat transfer performance can be enhanced with larger Re number and the temperature rise could be weaken. Compared against ethanol, water performed much better for heat removal. However, with intensive heat flux, both water and ethanol couldn’t meet the requirement and the temperature at outlet would increase remarkably, extremely for ethanol. These findings would be helpful for thermal management design and optimization.
