Radial jet drilling (RJD) is an efficient approach for improving the productivity of wells in low permeability, marginal and coal-bed methane (CBM) reservoirs at a very low cost. It uses high-pressure water jet to drill lateral holes from a vertical wellbore. The length of the lateral holes is greatly influenced by the frictional resistance in the hole deflector. However, the hole deflector frictional resistance and structure design have not been well studied. This work fills that gap. Frictional resistances were measured in a full-scale experiment and calculated by numerical simulation. The structure of the hole deflector was parameterized and a geometric model was developed to design the hole deflector track. An empirical model was then established to predict the frictional resistance as a function of the hole deflector structure parameters and an optimization method for designing the hole deflector was proposed. Finally, four types of hole deflectors were optimized using this method. The results show good agreement between the numerical simulation and the experimental data. The model error is within 11.6%. The bend radius R and exit angle β are the key factors affecting the performance of the hole deflector. The validation test was conducted for a case hole deflector (5½ in. casing). The measured frictional resistance was decreased from 31.44 N to 23.16 N by 26.34%. The results from this research could serve as a reference for the design of hole deflectors for radial jet drilling.

In order to obtain a lightweight front upright of an electric formula car’s suspension, the topology optimization method is used in the front upright structure design. The mathematical model of the lightweight optimization design is constructed, and the geometric model of the initial design of the front upright is subjected to the ultimate load condition. The structural optimization of a front upright resulted in the mass reduction of the upright by 60.43%. The optimized model was simulated and verified regarding the strength, stiffness, and safety factor under three different conditions, namely turning braking, emergency braking, and sharp turning. In the experiment, the uprights were machined and assembled and integrated into the racing suspension. The experimental results showed that the optimized front uprights met the requirements of performance.

In this paper, ANSYS-LSDYNA is used to establish the numerical simulation model of the blocked collision and the blocked hazard is analyzed in the process of putting the oil perforating string into downhole. According to the analysis results, the anti-blocked safety firing head is designed and the key technology is carried on the structure design and the experimental study [1]. The field application proved that this technology can effectively eliminate the potential hazards of mistaken perforating caused by sliding, falling objects, etc. It’s safety, reliable, and low cost.

The drum is the working mechanism of the coal shearer, and the coal loading performance of the drum is very important for the efficient and safe production of coal mine. In order to study the coal loading performance of the shearer drum, a discrete element model of coupling the drum and coal wall was established by combining the results of the coal property determination and the discrete element method. The movement of coal particles and the mass distribution in different areas were obtained, and the coal particle velocity and coal loading rate were analyzed under the conditions of different helix angles, rotation speeds, traction speeds and cutting depths. The results show that with the increase of helix angle, the coal loading first increases and then decreases; with the increase of cutting depth and traction speed, the coal loading rate decreases; the increase of rotation speed can improve the coal loading performance of drum to a certain extent. The research results show that the discrete element numerical simulation can accurately reflect the coal loading process of the shearer drum, which provides a more convenient, fast and low-cost method for the structural design of shearer drum and the improvement of coal loading performance.

Rotary-wing unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are widespread in both the military and civilian applications. However, there are still some problems for the UAV design such as the long design period, high manufacturing cost, and difficulty in maintenance. Therefore, this paper proposes a novel design method to obtain a lightweight and maintainable UAV frame from configurable design to detailed design. First, configurable design is implemented to determine the initial design domain of the UAV frame. Second, topology optimization method based on inertia relief theory is used to transform the initial geometric model into the UAV frame structure. Third, process design is considered to improve the manufacturability and maintainability of the UAV frame. Finally, dynamic drop test is used to validate the crashworthiness of the UAV frame. Therefore, a lightweight UAV frame structure composed of thin-walled parts can be obtained and the design period can be greatly reduced via the proposed method.

Abstract The present work aimed to select the optimum solar tracking mode for parabolic trough concentrating collectors using numerical simulation. The current work involved: (1) the calculation of daily solar radiation on the Earth’s surface, (2) the comparison of annual direct solar radiation received under different tracking modes and (3) the determination of optimum tilt angle for the north-south tilt tracking mode. It was found that the order of solar radiation received in Shanghai under the available tracking modes was: dual-axis tracking > north-south Earth’s axis tracking > north-south tilt tracking (β = 15°) > north-south tilt tracking (β = 45) > north-south horizontal tracking > east-west horizontal tracking. Single-axis solar tracking modes feature simple structures and low cost. This study also found that the solar radiation received under the north-south tilt tracking mode was higher than that of the north-south Earth’s axis tracking mode in 7 out of 12 months. Therefore, the north-south tilt tracking mode was studied separately to determine the corresponding optimum tilt angles in Haikou, Lhasa, Shanghai, Beijing and Hohhot, respectively, which were shown as follows: 18.81°, 27.29°, 28.67°, 36.21° and 37.97°.

To explore the mechanical properties of the braided corrugated hose, the space curve parametric equation of the braided tube is deduced, specific to the structural features of the braided tube. On this basis, the equivalent braided tube model is proposed based on the same axial stiffness in order to improve the calculational efficiency. The geometric model and the Finite Element Model of the DN25 braided corrugated hose is established. The numerical simulation results are analyzed, and the distribution of the equivalent stress and frictional stress is discussed. The maximum equivalent stress of the braided corrugated hose occurs at the braided tube, with the value of 903MPa. The maximum equivalent stress of the bellows occurs at the area in contact with the braided tube, with the value of 314MPa. The maximum frictional stress between the bellows and the braided tube is 88.46MPa. The tensile experiment of the DN25 braided corrugated hose is performed. The simulation results are in good agreement with test data, with a maximum error of 9.4%, verifying the rationality of the model. The study is helpful to the research of the axial stiffness of the braided corrugated hose and provides the base for wear and life studies on the braided corrugated hose.

The term 'Hydroponics' was derived from Greek words 'hydro' means water and 'ponics' means labor. Hydroponic is a modern agricultural technique that uses nutrient solution rather than soil solution for fodder production. As population increases the food demand also increased, the existing system of agriculture will not be able to meet the food requirement in the near future due to environmental challenges in the industry. The major environmental factors affecting the hydroponics production system are; Temperature, relative humidity, and light. The objectives of this studies are to examine the hydroponics greenhouse technologies, impact of environmental factors on hydroponics greenhouse cultivation and challenges of growing on hydroponics greenhouse system. This study revealed that hydroponics greenhouse cultivation is a better option for improved fodder production, water utilization, palatability and digestibility.
