Friction and Wear Behavior of Fe–Cr–B Alloys in Liquid Paraffin Oil

The tribological properties of Fe–Cr–B alloys were studied sliding against SiC ball in liquid paraffin oil. The boron played an important role in improving tribological properties of alloys. The friction coefficients of alloys decreased with the increase of normal load and sliding speed. The Fe–Cr–B alloys showed better wear resistance than that of Fe–Cr alloy. Fe-21 wt.% Cr-7 wt.% B alloy had the best tribological properties. The wear mechanism of Fe–Cr alloy was abrasive wear and plastic deformation. The wear mechanism of Fe–Cr–B alloys was microploughing and fatigue flaking pits.

Deep rolling is an established mechanical surface treatment technology based on local plastic deformation of the surface layer. By these means, residual stresses, and strain hardening are induced into the surface layer as well as its surface structure is smoothed. Vibrorolling is a derivate technology of deep rolling characterized by sinusoidal rolling lanes. Due to process kinematics of vibrorolling the surface layer is incrementally deformed multiple times in different directions. As a result, a more intensive plastic deformation of the surface layer is achieved and potentially tribologically active surface structures are produced. To investigate and compare the effects of both surface treatment technologies on the tribological behavior of a processed component, a friction and wear analysis under lubricated conditions was conducted in this work. Friction and wear behavior of untreated, deep rolled, and vibrorolled specimens using a pin-on-cylinder tribometer was conducted. Hardness, roughness, and geometrical measurements of the wear traces were used to characterize the specimens. Additionally, qualitative assessments of the wear traces using scanning electron microscopy imaging were made. The measurements were performed before, during, and after the friction and wear analysis. Furthermore, contact forces between a tribometer pin and the workpiece were determined to analyze the development of contact shear stresses. Based on the conducted investigations, the effects of deep rolling and vibrorolling on the friction and wear behavior of the treated specimens are discussed and explanations for the observed phenomena are formulated in this work.

The effect of various operational factors, such as sliding speed, normal load and temperature on the tribological properties of Date palm fruit syrup (DPFS) as an environmentally friendly lubricant, is investigated. Ball-on-disc wear tests are conducted on mild steel samples in the presence of DPFS as a lubricant under different conditions and the coefficient of friction and wear rate are measured. Scanning electron microscopy, stylus profilometry, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy are used to evaluate the wear tracks to determine the underlying wear mechanisms. Results showed that DPFS has excellent tribological properties in terms of low friction and low wear rates making it a potential candidate to be used as a lubricant in tribological applications.

ABSTRACTPin-on-disk tests were performed for comparative friction and wear behavior on flat and graded profile boron implanted beryllium samples. Peak, intended boron concentrations of 10, 20, 30 and 40 atom percent were investigated. Auger Electron Spectroscopy was used to determine the boron concentration as a function of depth. Preliminary work was performed to study the effects of (1) a low temperature (450°C, 1–1/2 hours) heat treatment of the implanted specimens and (2) a change in the pin material. All of the boron implanted beryllium samples showed significant improvement versus unimplanted beryllium and an anodized beryllium surface. Graded samples showed comparable friction coefficients but inferior wear resistance with respect to the flat profile samples.

(1) In order to improve the properties of antifriction and wear resistance of polyimide (PI) composite under high temperature conditions, (2) 3-Aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES) and Lanthanum (La) salt modifications were employed to manufacture poly-p-phenylenebenzobisoxazole (PBO)/PI composites with different interface properties. The representative ambient temperatures of 130 and 260 °C were chosen to study the friction and wear behavior of composites with different interface properties. (3) Results revealed that while both modification methods can improve the chemical activity of the surface of PBO fibers, the La salt modification is more effective. The friction coefficient of all composites decreases with the increase of sliding velocity and load at two temperatures, and the specific wear rate is increases. Contrary to the situation in the 130 °C environment, the wear resistance of the unmodified composite in the 260 °C environment is greatly affected by the sliding velocity and load, while the modified composites are less affected. Under the same test parameters, the PBO–La/PI composite has the lowest specific wear rate and friction coefficient, and (4) La salt modification is a more effective approach to improve the properties of antifriction and wear resistance of PI composite than APTES modification in high ambient temperatures.

Purpose This paper aims to investigate the effects of reciprocating frequency, large normal load on friction and wear behavior of hydrogenated diamond-like carbon (H-DLC) coating against Ti-6Al-4V ball under dry and lubricated conditions. Design/methodology/approach The friction and wear mechanisms are analyzed by scanning electron microscope, energy dispersive spectroscopy and Raman spectroscopy. Findings The results show that as reciprocating frequency increases under lubricated conditions, the friction coefficient decreases first and then increases. When the reciprocating frequency is 2.54 Hz, the value of friction coefficient reaches the minimum. The friction reduction is because of the transformation from sp3 to sp2, the formation of transfer layer on Ti-6Al-4V ball and the reduction in viscous friction, whereas the increase of friction coefficient is related to wear. In dry conditions, the friction coefficient is between 0.06 and 0.1. And, the service life of H-DLC coating decreases with the increase in reciprocating frequency and normal load. Research limitations/implications It is confirmed that adding the lubricant could prolong the service life of H-DLC coating and reduce friction and wear efficiently. And, the wear mechanisms under dry and lubricated conditions encompass abrasive wear and adhesive wear. Originality/value The results are helpful for application of diamond-like carbon coating.

This paper summarizes the friction and wear behavior of some fluoride-metal, self-lubricating composites. Fluoride-infiltrated sintered nickel alloy composites and plasma-sprayed, co-deposited fluoride-nickel alloy composites are described. The importance of proper surface-conditioning of the composites is stressed. Performance of fluoride-metal composites in some machine application evaluations is discussed.

Enhanced corrosion and wear resistance are crucially important to prolong the service life of biomaterials. Boronizing has been reported to enhance the wear resistance of pure chromium. In this research, we investigate friction and wear behavior of boronized chromium. Pin-on-disc tribometer was used to conduct the wear and friction tests. Experiments were conducted in dry conditions as well as in simulated body fluid (SBF). Fundamental aspects of wear mode and lubrication behavior were studied using surface characterization techniques such as TEM, and X-ray diffraction. Results showed evidence of tribo-chemical interactions between SBF and work piece materials.

The friction and wear properties of the DLC coatings were evaluated while being lubricated with pure PAG, PAG containing PN and ZDDP using reciprocating ball-on-disk sliding UMT tester, respectively. The morphologies of the worn surfaces of the DLC coatings were observed using a scanning electron microscope (SEM). The results indicated that the DLC coatings exhibited better tribological properties under the lubrication of PAG containing PN or ZDDP than that of pure PAG. In addition, PN and ZDDP as additives show different tribological properties. The former offers better anti-wear ability, the latter offers better friction-reducing properties.
