Investigation of Diametral Acoustic Modes in a Model of a Steam Control Gate Valve

The objective of the present study is to provide an insight into mechanism of coupling between turbulent pipe flow and partially trapped diametral acoustic modes associated with a shallow cavity formed by the seat of a steam control gate valve. First, the effects of the internal pipe geometry immediately upstream and downstream of the shallow cavity on the characteristics of partially trapped diametral acoustic modes were investigated. The mode shapes were calculated numerically by solving a Helmholtz equation in a three-dimensional domain corresponding to the internal geometry of the pipe and the cavity. Second, the set of experiments were performed using a scaled model of a gate valve mounted in a pipeline that contained converging–diverging sections in the vicinity of the valve. Acoustic pressure measurements at three azimuthal locations at the floor of the cavity were performed for a range of geometries of the converging–diverging section and inflow velocities. The experimentally obtained pressure data were then used to scale the amplitude of the pressure in the numerical simulations. The present results are in good agreement with the results reported in earlier studies for an axisymmetric cavity mounted in a pipe with a uniform cross-section. The resonant response of the system corresponded to the second diametral mode of the cavity. Excitation of the dominant acoustic mode was accompanied by pressure oscillations corresponding to other acoustic modes. As the angle of the converging–diverging section of the main pipeline in the vicinity of the cavity increased, the trapped behavior of the acoustic diametral modes diminished, and additional antinodes of the acoustic pressure wave were observed in the main pipeline.

The interaction of a cavity shear layer with the sound field of an acoustic mode can generate an aeroacoustic source which is capable of initiating and sustaining acoustic resonances in the duct housing the cavity. This aeroacoustic source is determined experimentally for an internal axisymmetric cavity exposed to high Reynolds number, fully developed turbulent pipe flow without the need to resolve the details of neither the unsteady flow field nor the flow-sound interaction process at the cavity. The experimental technique, referred to here as the standing wave method (SWM), employs six microphones distributed upstream and downstream of the cavity to evaluate the fluctuating pressure difference generated by the oscillating cavity shear layer in the presence of an externally imposed sound wave. The results of the aeroacoustic source are in good agreement with the concepts of free shear layer instability and the fluid-resonant oscillation behavior. The accuracy of the measurement technique is evaluated by means of sensitivity tests. In addition, the measured source is used to predict the self-excited acoustic resonance of a shallow cavity in a pipeline. Comparison of the predicted and measured results shows excellent prediction of the self-excited acoustic resonance, including the resonance frequency, the lock-in velocity range, and the amplitude of the self-generated acoustic resonance.

The aim of the following paper is to discuss a newly developed approach for the identification of vibration mode shapes of multilayer composite structures. To overcome the limitations of the approaches based on image analysis (two-dimensional structures, high spatial resolution of mode shapes description), convolutional neural networks (CNNs) are applied to create a three-dimensional mode shapes identification algorithm with a significantly reduced number of mode shape vector coordinates. The CNN-based procedure is accurate, effective, and robust to noisy input data. The appearance of local damage is not an obstacle. The change of the material and the occurrence of local material degradation do not affect the accuracy of the method. Moreover, the application of the proposed identification method allows identifying the material degradation occurrence.

A three-dimensional (3D) method of analysis is presented for determining the free vibration frequencies and mode shapes of thick, complete (not truncated) conical shells of revolution in which the bottom edges are normal to the midsurface of the shells based upon the circular cylindrical coordinate system using the Ritz method. Comparisons are made between the frequencies and the corresponding mode shapes of the conical shells from the authors' former analysis with bottom edges parallel to the axial direction and the present analysis with the edges normal to shell midsurfaces.

The aim of this paper is to study the effects of mistuning on fan flutter and to compare the prediction of two numerical models of different fidelity. The high fidelity model used here is a three-dimensional, whole assembly, time-accurate, viscous, finite-volume compressible flow solver. The Code used for this purpose is AU3D, written in Imperial College and validated for flutter computations over many years. To the best knowledge of authors, this is the first time such computations have been attempted. This is due to the fact that, such non-linear aeroelastic computations with mistuning require large amount of CPU time and cannot be performed routinely and consequently, faster (low fidelity) models are required for this task. Therefore, the second model used here is the aeroelastic fundamental mistuning model (FMM) and it based on an eigenvalue analysis of the linearized modal aeroelastic system with the aerodynamic matrix calculated from the aerodynamic influence coefficients. The influence coefficients required for this algorithm are obtained from the time domain non-linear Code by shaking one blade in the datum (tuned) frequency and mode. Once the influence coefficients have been obtained, the computations of aero damping require minimal amount of CPU time and many different mistuning patterns can be studied. The objectives of this work are to: 1. Compare the results between the two models and establish the capabilities/limitations of aeroelastic FMM, 2. Check if the introduction of mistuning would bring the experimental and computed flutter boundaries closer, 3. Establish a relationship between mistuning and damping. A rig wide-chord fan blade, typical of modern civil designs, was used as the benchmark geometry for this study. All the flutter analyses carried out in this paper are with frequency mistuning, but the possible consequences of mistuned mode shapes are briefly discussed at the end of this paper. Only the first family of modes (1F, first flap) is considered in this work. For the frequency mistuning analysis, the 1F frequency is varied around the annulus but the 1F mode shapes remain the same for all the blades. For the mode shape mistuning computations, an FE analysis of the whole assembly different mass blades is performed. The results of this work clearly show the importance of mistuning on flutter. It also demonstrates that when using rig test data for aeroelastic validation of CFD codes, the amount mistuning present must be known. Finally, it should be noted that the aim of this paper is the study of mistuning and not steady/unsteady validation of a CFD code and therefore minimal aerodynamic data are presented.

Abstract Vibration of an array of stacked annular plates, in which adjacent plates couple weakly through an acoustic layer, is investigated through experimental and theoretical methods. Such acoustic coupling manifests itself through split natural frequencies, beating in the time responses of adjacent or separated plates, and system-level modes in which plates in the array vibrate in- or out-of-phase at closely-spaced frequencies. Laboratory measurements, including a technique in which the frequency response function of all in-phase modes but no out-of-phase modes, or visa versa, is measured, demonstrate the contribution of coupling to the natural frequency spectrum, and identify the combinations of design parameters for which it is important. For the lower modes of primary interest here, the natural frequencies of the out-of-phase system modes decrease as the air layer becomes thinner, while those of the in-phase mode remain sensibly constant at the in vacuo values. A vibration model comprising N classical thin plates that couple through the three-dimensional acoustic fields established in the annular cavities between plates is developed, and its results are compared with measurements of the natural frequencies and mode shapes.

The shape of the modal duct of an acoustic wave propagating in a muffling system varies with the internal geometry. This shape can be either as a result of plane wave propagation or three-dimensional wave propagation. These shapes depict the distribution of acoustic pressure that may be used in the design or modification of mufflers to create resonance at cut-off frequencies and hence achieve noise attenuation or special effects on the output of the noise. This research compares the shapes of acoustic duct modes of two sets of four pitch configurations of a helicoid in a simple expansion chamber with and without a central tube. Models are generated using Autodesk Inventor modeling software and imported into ANSYS 18.2, where a fluid volume from the complex computer-aided-design (CAD) geometry is extracted for three-dimensional (3D) analysis. Mesh is generated to capture the details of the fluid cavity for frequency range between 0 and 2000Hz. After defining acoustic properties, acoustic boundary conditions and loads were defined at inlet and outlet ports before computation. Postprocessed acoustic results of the modal shapes and transmission loss (TL) characteristics of the two configurations were obtained and compared for geometries of the same helical pitch. It was established that whereas plane wave propagation in a simple expansion chamber (SEC) resulted in a clearly defined acoustic pressure pattern across the propagation path, the distribution in the configurations with and without the central tube depicted three-dimensional acoustic wave propagation characteristics, with patterns scattering or consolidating to regions of either very low or very high acoustic pressure differentials. A difference of about 80 decibels between the highest and lowest acoustic pressure levels was observed for the modal duct of the geometry with four turns and with a central tube. On the other hand, the shape of the TL curve shifts from a sinusoidal-shaped profile with well-defined peaks and valleys in definite multiples of π for the simple expansion chamber, while that of the other two configurations depended on the variation in wavelength that affects the location of occurrence of cut-on or cut-off frequency. The geometry with four turns and a central tube had a maximum value of TL of about 90 decibels at approximately 1900Hz.

Spinning behaviour of diametral acoustic modes associated with self-sustained flow oscillations in a deep, axisymmetric cavity located in a long pipeline was investigated experimentally. High-amplitude pressure fluctuations resulted from the excitation of the diametral acoustic modes by the fully-turbulent flow in the pipeline. The unsteady pressure was measured at three equally spaced azimuthal locations at the bottom of the cavity. This arrangement allowed calculation of the azimuthal orientation of the acoustic modes, which were classified as stationary, partially spinning or spinning. Introduction of shallow chamfers to the upstream and the downstream edges of the cavity resulted in changes of azimuthal orientation and spinning behaviour of the acoustic modes. In addition, introduction of splitter plates in the cavity led to pronounced change in the spatial orientation and the spinning behaviour of the acoustic modes. The short splitter plates changed the behaviour of the dominant acoustic modes from partially spinning to stationary, while the long splitter plates enforced the stationary behaviour across all resonant acoustic modes.

Based on their three-dimensional mode shapes, the vibrational modes of free finite length thick cylinders can be classified into 6 categories, consisting of pure radial, radial motion with radial shearing, extensional, circumferential, axial bending, and global modes. This classification, together with the numbers of both the circumferential and the longitudinal nodes, is sufficient to identify each mode of a finite length thick cylinder. The mode classification was verified experimentally by measurements on a thick cylinder. According to the displacement distribution ratio in the radial, tangential and longitudinal directions, the effect of varying cylinder length on the vibrational modes is such that all the modes can be broadly categorized as either pure radial modes, or non pure radial modes. The natural frequencies and mode shapes of the former are dependent upon only the radial dimensions of the models, while the natural frequencies and mode shapes of the latter are dependent upon both the axial length and radial thickness.

This study is based on a real finite element human head–neck model and concentrates on its numerical vibration characteristic. Frequency spectrum and mode shapes of the finite element model of human head–neck under mechanical vibration have been calculated. These vibration characteristics are in good agreement with the previous studies. The simulated fundamental frequency of 35.25 Hz is fairly similar to the published documents, and rarely reported modal responses such as “mastication” and flipping of nasal lateral cartilages modes, however, are introduced by our three-dimensional modal analysis. These additional modes may be of interest to surgeons or clinicians who are specialized in temporomandibular or rhinoplasty joint disorder. Modal validation in terms of modal shapes proposes a necessity for elaborate modeling to identify each individual part’s extra frequencies. Furthermore, it also studies the influence of damping on resonant frequencies and biomechanical responses. It is discovered that damping has an inverse proportionality between damping effect on natural frequency and that on biomechanical responses.

Flutter numerical analysis of a dynamically scaled model (DSM) of a high aspect ratio wing was performed using experimentally obtained generalized parameters of eigen modes of vibrations. The DSM is made of polymer composite materials and is designed for aeroelastic studies in a high-speed wind tunnel. As a result of the analysis, safe operation conditions (flutter limits) of the DSM were determined. The input data to develop the flutter mathematical model are DSM modal test results, i.e. eigen frequencies, mode shapes, modal damping coefficients, and generalized masses obtained from the experiment. The known methods to determine generalized masses have experimental errors. In this work some of the most practical methods to get generalized masses are used: mechanical loading, quadrature component addition and the complex power method. Errors of the above methods were analyzed, and the most reliable methods were selected for flutter analysis. Comparison was made between the flutter analysis using generalized parameters and a pure theoretical one based on developing the mathematical model from the DSM design specifications. According to the design specifications, the mathematical model utilizes the beam-like schematization of the wing. The analysis was performed for Mach numbers from 0.2 to 0.8 and relative air densities of 0.5, 1, 1.5. Comparison of the two methods showed the difference in critical flutter dynamic pressure no more than 6%, which indicates good prospects of the flutter analysis based on generalized parameters of eigen modes.
