Taking the water pump bearing with one roller row (WR)-type auto water pump bearing as a research sample, an analytical calculation method is developed to improve the accuracy and efficiency of the current calculations for the bearing loads and life in engineering application. Considering the misalignment due to the deflection of the bearing spindle, the bearing internal loads and deformations under the action of the complicated external space loads are obtained. The bearing fatigue life including the lives of the rollers and the balls is also calculated with considering the non-normal load distribution caused by the spindle deflection and the roller tilt. The bearing load and life calculation results are compared with those calculated by the traditional method in which the deflection of the bearing spindle and the roller tilt are ignored. The effects of the bearing spindle deflection on the load distribution and the life of the auto water pump bearing are analyzed and discussed. The life decrease in the auto water pump bearing is significant due to the deflection of the bearing spindle and it is recommended to give more attention to this deflection for the high quality of the bearing design and calculation.

Because of cross roller-slewing bearing structure have a certain degree of particularity, and two sets of cross rollers is equivalent to two columns roller stack situation, therefore it should deduce roller calculation formula for two sets of roller respectively. According to the stress of the slewing bearings, we proceed load distribution calculation synthetically under the center of bearing axial force, overturning moment and radial force. Finally, based on the above formula for calculating the bearing load distribution and through the Matlab software, we analyze the influence of some parameters on the bearing load distribution. For ensuring bearing design parameter, it has the certain reference value.

An elasticity analysis to calculate the distribution of all bearing loads in a turbo-generator set is presented from first principles. It is shown that the movement of bearing pedestals caused by the thermal distortion of the foundation can cause considerable changes of load distribution between bearings with consequent problems of oil film instability and shaft whip. Acute misalignment encountered in practice can cause some bearings to take a negative load. The development of a computer programme is described, which can be used to investigate a range of possible cold re-alignments. A separate analysis of the particular type of bearings used shows that the load capacity is completely adequate in the downwards direction, but greatly reduced in the upwards direction. Upwards loads of static or dynamic origin should be avoided with the type of journal bearing design considered here.

The notion of a quality criterion for non-tunable band-stop filters is introduced, and on the basis of it a comparison of filters with different designs is performed. The quality criterion takes into account the electrical characteristics of the filter and its dimensions, including the volume, the central frequency of the notch band, the level of total losses in the passbands, the width of the notch band by the level of total losses, the width of the notch band by attenuation level. Thus, it allows you to compare the quality of design and manufacture of passive notch filters of various types. The necessary analytical expression is presented, and for a number of variants of filter execution, the corresponding calculation results are given. The stated materials allow us to estimate and optimize the system of interrelated parameters of filters of an arbitrary physical structure.

Generally, interactions at surface asperities are the cause of wear. Two-Thirds of wear in industry occurs because of the abrasive or adhesive mechanisms. This research presents an analytical model for abrasion of additive manufactured Digital Light Processing products using pin-on-disk method. Particularly, the relationship between abrasion volume, normal load, and surface asperities’ angle is investigated. To verify the proposed mathematical model, the results of this model are verified with the practical experiments. Results show that the most influential parameters on abrasion rate are normal load and surface’s normal angle. Abrasion value increases linearly with increasing normal load. The maximum abrasion value occurs when the surface’s normal angle during fabrication is 45°. After the asperities are worn the abrasion volume is the same for all specimens with different surface’s normal angle. Though layer thickness does not directly affect the wear rate, but surface roughness tests show that layer thickness has a great impact on the quality of the abraded surface. When the thickness of the layers is high, the abraded surface has deeper valleys, and thus has a more negative skewness. This paper presents an original approach in abrasion behavior improvement of DLP parts which no research has been done on it so far; thus, bringing the AM one step closer to maturity.

In high speed, high load fluid-film bearings, the laminar-turbulent flow transition can lead to a considerable reduction of the maximum bearing temperatures, due to a homogenization of the fluid-film temperature in radial direction. Since this phenomenon only occurs significantly in large bearings or at very high sliding speeds, means to achieve the effect at lower speeds have been investigated in the past. This paper shows an experimental investigation of this effect and how it can be used for smaller bearings by optimized eddy grooves, machined into the bearing surface. The investigations were carried out on a Miba journal bearing test rig with Ø120 mm shaft diameter at speeds between 50 m/s–110 m/s and at specific bearing loads up to 4.0 MPa. To investigate the potential of this technology, additional temperature probes were installed at the crucial position directly in the sliding surface of an up-to-date tilting pad journal bearing. The results show that the achieved surface temperature reduction with the optimized eddy grooves is significant and represents a considerable enhancement of bearing load capacity. This increase in performance opens new options for the design of bearings and related turbomachinery applications.

Managing the performance of the Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) server under heavy load conditions is a critical task in a Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) network. In this paper, a two-tier model is proposed for the security, load mitigation, and distribution issues of the SIP server. In the first tier, the proposed handler segregates and drops the malicious traffic. The second tier provides a uniform load of distribution, using the least session termination time (LSTT) algorithm. Besides, the mean session termination time is minimized by reducing the waiting time of the SIP messages. Efficiency of the LSTT algorithm is evaluated through the experimental test bed by considering with and without a handler. The experimental results establish that the proposed two-tier model improves the throughput and the CPU utilization. It also reduces the response time and error rate while preserving the quality of multimedia session delivery. This two-tier model provides robust security, dynamic load distribution, appropriate server selection, and session synchronization.

Abstract This paper extends the “cross-sectional” approach for reverse engineering, used abundantly in biomedical applications, to the mechanical domain. We propose a combination of “projective” and cross-sectional algorithms for handling physical artifacts with complex topology and geometry. In addition, the paper introduces the concept of constraint-based reverse engineering, where the constraint parameters could include one or more of the following: time, storage (memory, disk-space), network bandwidth, Quality of Service (output-resolution), and so forth. We describe a specific reverse-engineering application which uses ultrasound (tilt-echo) imaging to reverse engineer spatial enumeration (volume) representations from cross-sectional data. The constraint here is time, and we summarize how our implementation can satisfy real-time reconstruction for distribution of the volume data on the internet. We present results that show volume representations computed from static objects. Since the algorithms are tuned to satisfy time constraints, this method is extendable to reverse engineer temporally-varying (elastic) objects. The current reverse engineering processing time is constrained by the data-acquisition (tilt-echo imaging) process, and the entire reverse engineering pipeline has been optimized to compute incremental volume representations in the order of 3 seconds on a network of four processors.

The objective of this article is to present the results obtained in a study on the interaction between the behavior of the structure and the foundation settlements and verify the influence of normal load distribution on the columns. In this mechanism, known as structure soil interaction (SSI), as the building is constructed, a transfer of loads occurs from the columns which tend to settle more to those that tend to settle less. The study was conducted in a building which had its settlements monitored from the beginning of construction. For this purpose, a linear tridimensional numerical model was constructed and numerical analysis was performed, using the finite elements method. In these analyses, numerical models corre- sponding to the execution of each floor were used, considering the settlements measured in each stage of the construction. The results of analy- ses showed that the effect of SSI are significant for calculating the normal efforts on the columns, particularly on those located in the first floors.
