Visualizing Flow Partitioning in a Model of the Upper Human Lung Airways

The convective transport of fluid within the human upper airways is investigated in a transparent model of the tracheobronchial tree. Oscillatory flow through the branching network with six generations was studied at varying Reynolds numbers between 400 and 2600 and Womersley numbers from 5.5 to 12.3 in the trachea representing clinical conditions during high frequency oscillatory ventilation. The flow partitioning within the model was visualized using advection of neutrally buoyant tracer particles, which were illuminated by short light pulses and recorded by a high speed camera. Integration of the particle locations for a large number of cycles provides the probability distribution of particles passing certain branches within the bifurcating network, and thus, the dispersion of particles in the airways. The results show the different characteristics of flow partitioning at varying Womersley and Reynolds numbers.

Experimental measurements of the mean wall shear stress and boundary layer momentum thickness on long, thin cylindrical bodies are presented. To date, the spatial growth of the boundary layer and the related boundary layer parameters have not been measured for cases where δ/a (a = cylinder radius) is of order one or greater. Moderate Reynolds numbers (104 < Reθ < 105) encountered in hydrodynamic applications, are considered. Tow tests of cylinders with diameters of 0.89 mm and 2.5 mm and lengths ranging from approximately 30 meters to 150 meters were performed using the High-Speed Seawater Tow Tank at NASA Langley Research Center. The total drag (axial force) was measured at tow speeds ranging from 2.4 to 17.4 m/sec. These data were used to determine the tangential drag coefficients on each test specimen, which were found to be two to three times greater than the values for the corresponding hypothetical flat-plate cases. Using the drag measurements, the turbulent boundary layer momentum thickness at the end of the cylindrical bodies is determined, using a control volume analysis. The results show that for the smallest diameter cylinders, there is no indication of relaminarization, and a fully developed turbulent boundary layer exists. In addition, laser measurements showed no large scale transverse motions (snaking) existed during the tows, and the tow angle was less than 1 degree for all cases, confirming that the cylinders were neutrally buoyant.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to examine mechanical and metallurgical properties of AlTiN- and TiN-coates high-speed steel (HSS) materials in detail. Design/methodology/approach – In this study, HSS steel parts have been processed through machining and have been coated with AlTiN and TiN on physical vapour deposition workbench at approximately 6,500°C for 4 hours. Tensile strength, fatigue strength, hardness tests for AlTiN- and TiN-coated HSS samples have been performed; moreover, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction analysis and microstructure analysis have been made by scanning electron microscopy. The obtained results have been compared with uncoated HSS components. Findings – It was found that tensile strength of TiAlN- and TiN-coated HSS parts is higher than that of uncoated HSS parts. Highest tensile strength has been obtained from TiN-coated HSS parts. Number of cycles for failure of TiAlN- and TiN-coated HSS parts is higher than that for HSS parts. Particularly TiN-coated HSS parts have the most valuable fatigue results. However, surface roughness of fatigue samples may cause notch effect. For this reason, surface roughness of coated HSS parts is compared with that of uncoated ones. While the average surface roughness (Ra) of the uncoated samples was in the range of 0.40 μm, that of the AlTiN- and TiN-coated samples was in the range of 0.60 and 0.80 μm, respectively. Research limitations/implications – It would be interesting to search different coatings for cutting tools. It could be the good idea for future work to concentrate on wear properties of tool materials. Practical implications – The detailed mechanical and metallurgical results can be used to assess the AlTiN and TiN coating applications in HSS materials. Originality/value – This paper provides information on mechanical and metallurgical behaviour of AlTiN- and TiN-coated HSS materials and offers practical help for researchers and scientists working in the coating area.

When a research ship sails at a high speed, there is relative motion between the ship and fluid. The ship is slammed by the fluid. To reduce the direct impact of the fluid, sonar is installed in the moonpool, and acoustic detection equipment is installed along the research ship bottom behind the moonpool. However, during high-speed sailing, a large number of bubbles form in the moonpool. Some bubbles escape from the moonpool and flow backward along the bottom of the ship. When a large number of bubbles are around the sonar and acoustic detection equipment, the equipment malfunctions. However, there have been few studies on bubble formation in the moonpool with sonar and distribution along the ship bottom behind the moonpool. Therefore, a related model was developed and prototype tests were carried out in this study. The appropriate similarity criteria were selected and verified to ensure the reliability of the experiment. Considering the influences of speed, sonar, moonpool shape, and draft, the reason and mechanism of bubble formation in a sonar moonpool were studied. An artificial ventilation method was used to simulate a real navigation environment. Because the bubbles are in a bright state under laser irradiation, the bubbles can be used as tracer particles. A high-speed camera captured illuminated bubbles. The distribution mechanism of bubbles along the ship bottom behind the moonpool was investigated using particle image velocimetry under the influence of the moonpool shape and sailing speed. The model experimental results agreed well with those of the prototype test. The air sucked into the water was the dominant factor in bubble formation in the moonpool. The bubbles were distributed in a W shape under the ship bottom.

In this study, four hybrid bearings having different geometric configurations were experimentally tested for their static and dynamic characteristics, including flowrate, load capacity, rotordynamic coefficients, and whirl frequency ratio. The four bearings included a square-recess, smooth-land, radial-orifice bearing (baseline), a circular-recess bearing, a triangular-recess bearing, and an angled-orifice bearing. Each bearing had the same orifice diameter rather than the same pressure ratio. Unique to these test results is the measurement of the added mass terms, which became significant in the present tests because of high operating Reynolds numbers. Comparisons of the results were made between bearings to determine which bearing had the best performance. Based on the parameters of interest, the angled-orifice bearing has the most favorable overall performance.

A pressure resistant and optically accessible deterministic lateral displacement (DLD) device was designed and microfabricated from silicon and glass for high-throughput fractionation of particles between 3.0 and 7.0 µm comprising array segments of varying tilt angles with a post size of 5 µm. The design was supported by computational fluid dynamic (CFD) simulations using OpenFOAM software. Simulations indicated a change in the critical particle diameter for fractionation at higher Reynolds numbers. This was experimentally confirmed by microparticle image velocimetry (µPIV) in the DLD device with tracer particles of 0.86 µm. At Reynolds numbers above 8 an asymmetric flow field pattern between posts could be observed. Furthermore, the new DLD device allowed successful fractionation of 2 µm and 5 µm fluorescent polystyrene particles at Re = 0.5–25.

We evaluated the flow in experimental pig aneurysms using a high speed video system with tracer particles and digital subtraction angiography (DSA). We found that flow velocity in experimental aneurysms was fast on the inflow of aneurysms. There was a certain correlation between mean transit time (MTT) and velocity in experimental aneurysms. Therefore, the differences of flow velocity in aneurysms will be detected using DSA. The flow in aneurysms was much changed by platinum coil embolization.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the impact of blockage effect and Reynolds Number dependency by comparing measurements of an alpine skier in standardized positions between two wind tunnels with varying blockage ratios and speed ranges. The results indicated significant blockage effects which need to be corrected for accurate comparison between tunnels, or for generalization to performance in the field. Using an optimized blockage constant, Maskell’s blockage correction method improved the mean absolute error between the two wind tunnels from 7.7% to 2.2%. At lower Reynolds Numbers (<8 × 105, or approximately 25 m/s in this case), skier drag changed significantly with Reynolds Number, indicating the importance of testing at competition specific wind speeds. However, at Reynolds Numbers above 8 × 105, skier drag remained relatively constant for the tested positions. This may be advantageous when testing athletes from high speed sports since testing at slightly lower speeds may not only be safer, but may also allow the athlete to reliably maintain difficult positions during measurements.

In order to determine the aerodynamic behavior of a Variable Inlet Guide Vane as used in multishaft compressors, extensive experimental investigations with a 2D linear cascade have been conducted. All the experiments were performed at the High-Speed Cascade Wind Tunnel at the Institute of Jet Propulsion. They covered a wide range of Reynolds numbers and stagger angles as they occur in realistic turbomachines. Within this work at first the observed basic flow phenomena (loss development, overturning) will be explained. For the present special case of a symmetric profile and a constant decreasing chord length along the vane height, statements about different spanwise position can be made by investigating different Reynolds numbers. The focus of this paper is on the outflow of the VIGV along the vane height. Results for an open flow separation on the suction side are presented, too. Stall condition can be delayed by boundary layer control. This is done using a wire to trigger an early boundary layer transition. The outcomes of the trip wire measurement are finally discussed. The objective of this work is to evaluate the influence of the stagger angle and Reynolds number on the total pressure losses and the deviation angle. The results of the work presented here, gives a better insight of the efficient use of a VIGV.

When buoyant vortex rings form, azimuthal disturbances occur on their surface. When the magnitude of the disturbance is sufficiently high, the ring will become turbulent. This paper establishes conditions for categorization of a buoyant vortex ring as laminar, transitional, or turbulent. The transition regime of enclosed-air buoyant vortex rings rising in still water was examined experimentally via two high-speed cameras. Sequences of the recorded pictures were analyzed using matlab. Key observations were summarized as follows: for Reynolds number lower than 14,000, Bond number below 30, and Weber number below 50, the vortex ring could not be produced. A transition regime was observed for Reynolds numbers between 40,000 and 70,000, Bond numbers between 120 and 280, and Weber number between 400 and 800. Below this range, only laminar vortex rings were observed, and above, only turbulent vortex rings.
