The effect of cold deformations as encountered in tube and superheater fabrication and of temperature and time of annealing on the grain-size characteristics of 18Cr8Ni-Ti is demonstrated by laboratory experiments with material from six heats of steel. It is shown that cold-drawn tubing retains a relatively uniform small grain size at annealing temperatures up to about 1900 F to 1950 F and that above this temperature individual grains begin to grow at an accelerated rate, leading to a mixed grain-size structure. Annealing times between 5 and 15 minutes caused only insignificant differences in the over all grain size, but extension of exposure to 30 minutes produced a noticeably larger grain structure. Small cold deformations as may be introduced into the material by tube straightening can, when followed by a final anneal, cause excessive localized grain enlargements. Observations pointed to the possibility that materials with high Ti/C ratios may retain a predominantly small grain size at annealing temperatures as high as 2050 F.

The present study explores a way to improve predictions of the mechanical anisotropy of textured polycrystalline aggregates. The underlying hypothesis is that grain-shape-dependent backstresses developed during the elastic-plastic transition influence the selection of active slip systems inside individual grains. Recently, a model was developed and applied successfully to electro-deposited pure iron with a columnar grain structure \cite{Delannay2011}. In the present study, we first suggest another definition of the boundary separation distance experienced by individual slip systems. Then, the model is adapted from the case of spheroidal grains, considered initially, to the more general situation of ellipsoidal grains. A combined effect of grain size, grain shape and texture on plastic anisotropy at yielding is illustrated in case of a rolled IF steel sheet.

This paper begins by demonstrating how the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) local scour equations take the ratio between grain size and structure size into account when computing equilibrium local scour depth and contrasts this with the well-known Colorado State University (CSU) equation that does not take sediment information into account. Then, a relatively recent empirical formulation from the J-L. Briaud research group for computing local equilibrium scour depth is presented that appears to take the structure size/grain size ratio into account indirectly. Next, a possible explanation for the dependency between local equilibrium scour depth and the structure/grain size ratio is presented that was originally developed by D. Max Sheppard in 2004. This explanation shows that superimposing the pressure gradient around a particle with the pressure gradient around a pile leads to the dependency between equilibrium scour depth and the grain size/structure size ratio. Finally, a new formulation for local equilibrium scour depth based upon turbulent energy spectrum decay is presented. This new formulation reduces the local scour problem to a problem whereby turbulent diffusivity must be better understood. However, this new formulation also appears to show a dependency between equilibrium scour depth and the grain size/structure size ratio. Overall, the analysis presented herein provides several reasons, explanations, and pieces of evidence to suggest that the grain/structure size ratio is an important parameter to consider when computing local equilibrium scour depth.

Abstract The paper presents measurements of the amount, spatial distribution, grain size structure, density and the content of organic matter in sediments of Suchedniów reservoir. After 33 years of exploitation, the primary volume of the reservoir decreased by 78 thousand m3. Catchment area covered in 45% by forests is 83 km2. Mean annual water flow is estimated at 0.63 m3·s-1. Primary volume of the reservoir was 303 thousand m3 and its surface area - 21.4 ha. The greatest width of the reservoir is 490 m, distance from the river inlet to the dam is 655 m and the length along assumed water course is 740 m. Mean and maximum depths are 1.42 and 4 m, respectively. The analyses of vertical and horizontal distribution of sediments revealed that in the deepest parts of the water body, where depth exceed 2.6 m, only 16% of sediment volume were deposited. In the inlet part of a relative volume of 0.2, 32% of sediment volume were deposited and in the outlet part - 16%. The reservoir accumulates material of a grain size <1.0 mm whose density varies between 2586 and 2758 kg·m-3. Percent of organic parts in sediments ranged from 0.24 to 18.97%. The existing methods of description of sediment distribution in retention reservoirs do not allow for accurate predicting of this distribution. They do not account for many factors affecting the distribution of sediments in reservoirs and for the time of exploitation. None of the dimensionless curves of the Annandale’s nomograph [ANNANDALE 1984] describes the distribution of sediments in Suchedniów Reservoir. The curve closest to the actual distribution curve corresponds to the value dP/dx = 1.2 while for Suchedniów Reservoir dP/dx is 0.0014 (P - wetted perimeter of the reservoir’s cross section, x - distance from the dam). Sediments in vertical profiles have laminar structure and bottom material in layers largely differs in grain size and colour which is an evidence of different conditions of sedimentation in different hydrological periods and exploita

During a study of mechanical properties of recrystallized B-free Ni3Al single crystals, regularly spaced parallel traces within individual grains were discovered on the surfaces of thin recrystallized sheets, see Fig. 1. They appeared to be slip traces, but since we could not find similar observations in the literature, a series of experiments was performed to identify them. We will refer to them “traces”, because they contain some, if not all, of the properties of slip traces. A variety of techniques, including the Electron Backscattering Pattern (EBSP) method, was used to ascertain the composition, geometry, and crystallography of these traces. The effect of sample thickness on their formation was also investigated. In summary, these traces on the surface of recrystallized Ni3Al have the following properties:1.The chemistry and crystallographic orientation of the traces are the same as the bulk. No oxides or other second phases were observed.2.The traces are not grooves caused by thermal etching at previous locations of grain boundaries.3.The traces form after recrystallization (because the starting Ni3Al is a single crystal).4.For thicknesses between 50 μm and 720 μm, the density of the traces increases as the sample thickness decreases. Only one set of “protrusion-like” traces is visible in a given grain on the thicker samples, but multiple sets of “cliff-like” traces are visible on the thinner ones (See Fig. 1 and Fig. 2).5.They are linear and parallel to the traces of {111} planes on the surface, see Fig. 3.6.Some of the traces terminate within the interior of the grains, and the rest of them either terminate at or are continuous across grain boundaries. The portion of latter increases with decreasing thickness.7.The grain size decreases with decreasing thickness, the decrease is more pronounced when the grain size is comparable with the thickness, Fig. 4.8.Traces also formed during the recrystallization of cold-rolled polycrystalline Cu thin sheets, Fig. 5.

ABSTRACTStructural and electrical characterization of laser recrystallized LPCVD silicon films on amorphous substrates using a shaped cw laser beam have been performed. In comparing the results to data obtained using a circular beam, it was found that a significant increase in grain size can be achieved and that the surface morphology of the shaped beam recrystallized material was much smoother. It was also found that whereas circular beam recrystallized material has a random grain structure, shaped beam material is highly oriented with a <100> texture. Finally the electrical characteristics of the recrystallized film were very good when measured in directions parallel to the grain boundaries.

Superalloy René 77 is very wide used for turbine blades, turbine disks of aircraft engines which work up to 1050°C. These elements are generally produced by the investment casting method. Turbine blades produced by conventional precision casting methods have coarse and inhomogeneous grain structure. Such a material often does not fulfil basic requirements, which concern mechanical properties for the stuff used in aeronautical engineering. The incorporation of controlled grain size improved mechanical properties. This control of grain size in the casting operation was accomplished by the control of processing parameters such as casting temperature, mould preheating temperature, and the use of grain nucleates in the face of the mould. For nickel and cobalt based superalloys, it was found that cobalt aluminate (CoAl2O4) has the best nucleating effect. The objective of this work was to determine the influence of the inoculant’s content (cobalt aluminate) in the surface layer of the ceramic mould on the microstructure and mechanical properties at high temperature of nickel based superalloy René 77. For this purpose, the ceramic moulds were made with different concentration of cobalt aluminate in the primary slurry was from 0 to 10% mass. in zirconium flour. Stepped and cylindrical samples were casted for microstructure and mechanical examinations. The average grain size of the matrix ( phase), was determined on the stepped samples. The influence of surface modification on the grain size of up to section thickness was considered. The microstructure investigations with the use of light microscopy and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) enable to examine the influence of the surface modification on the morphology of ’ phase and carbides precipitations. Verification of the influence of CoAl2O4 on the mechanical properties of castings were investigated on the basis of results obtained form creep tests.

The results of realized in 2010 field researches of the spatial and time grain-size structure variability of beach and bottom sediments of the bay-bar Anapskaya southern part are presented in this paper. Irretrievable carrying out of sediment particles to depths more than 7 m intensifies with their size decrease to 0,1 mm. As over 70 % bottom and about 60 % beach sediments are presented by fractions less 0,16 mm on bay-bar Anapskaya southern part, namely at this part there is sand material massive carrying out to depth. Potential danger of the investigated site geosystem degradation is revealed.

The ability to predict the mechanical behavior of brittle rocks using bonded block models (BBM) depends on the accuracy of the geometrical representation of the grain-structure and the applied micro-properties. This paper evaluates the capabilities of BBMs for predictive purposes using an approach that employs published micro-properties in combination with a Voronoi BBM that properly approximates the real rock grain-structure. The Wausau granite, with Unconfined Compressive Strength (UCS) of 226 MPa and average grain diameter of 2 mm, is used to evaluate the effectiveness of the predictive approach. Four published sets of micro-properties calibrated for granites with similar mineralogy to the Wausau granite are used for the assessment. The effect of grain-structure representation in Voronoi BBMs is analyzed, considering grain shape, grain size and mineral arrangement. A unique contribution of this work is the explicit consideration of the effect of stochastic grain-structure generation on the obtained results. The study results show that the macro-properties of a rock can be closely replicated using the proposed approach. When using this approach, the micro-properties have a greater impact on the realism of the predictions than the specific grain-structure representation. The grain shape and grain size representations have a minor effect on the predictions for cases that do not deviate substantially from the real average grain geometry. However, the stochastic effect introduced by the use of randomly-generated Voronoi grain-structures can be significant, and this effect should be considered in future studies.

In Alloy 718 ingot cogging process, dynamic and metadynamic recrystallizations, and static grain growth occur, and also the presence of δ phase plays a key role in controlling the grain size. In this study, the evolution of grain structure in VIM/VAR-processed Alloy 718 ingots during post-cogging heat treatments is dealt with. Compression tests were made on VIM/VAR-processed Alloy 718 ingot at temperatures between 900oC ~ 1150oC. Heat treatments were made on the compression-tested specimens, and the variation of grain size was evaluated. Constitutive equations for the grain growth are established to represent the evolution of microstructures. Special attention is paid to the evolution of grain structure under the condition of dynamic and metadynamic recrystallizations, and grain growth. The grain growth rate depends mainly on the presence of δ-phase below the δ-solvus temperature, and on the difference in the grain boundary characteristics above it.

The paper presents analysis of section thickness’ influence on microstructure of Elektron 21 and QE22 magnesium alloys in the form of a stepped casting test. Solid solution grain size and volume fraction of eutectic areas were measured using light microscope and sterological methods. The results showed the significant increase of grain size caused by wall thickness and its slight decrease connected with the distance beetwen analysed section and the gating system. This relationship was confirmed using statistical methods. QE22 alloy demonstrated finer grain structure than Elektron 21 alloy as well as lesser susceptibility of grain size to solidification conditions
