Calculated results based on a theoretical analysis of hydraulic transients in pipes taking into account the viscoelastic behavior of pipewall material are compared with experimental results. This comparison shows that the model accurately predicts pressure fluctuations in fluid and circumferential strain changes of the pipe during transients resulting from the rapid closure of a valve.

An original poling method using purely optical means and based on a dual-frequency interference process is presented. We show that the coherent superposition of two beams at fundamental and second-harmonic frequencies results in a polar field with an irreducible rotational spectrum containing both a vector and an octupolar component. This enables the method to be applied even to molecules without a permanent dipole such as octupolar molecules. After a theoretical analysis of the process, we describe different experiments aiming at light-induced noncentrosymmetry performed respectively on one-dimensional Disperse Red 1 and octupolar Ethyl Violet molecules. Macroscopic octupolar patterning of the induced order is demonstrated in both transient and permanent regimes. Experimental results show good agreement with theory.

A novel rain gauge based on acoustic self-calibration principle is proposed in the paper. Acoustic self-calibration principle can eliminate the uncertainty of the velocity of ultrasound and achieve accurate measurement of rainfall. The rain gauge not only overcomes the influence on the rainfall measurement under intensive rainfall conditions, but also improves the precision of rain gauge. Plenty of experiments have been done to validate the design. Both theoretical analysis and experimental results show the effectiveness of the rain gauge. A full description of the rain gauge and implementation are presented.

Two Factors

Abstract We re-examined the effects of wavelength error and spectral band width on the measurement of alkaline phosphatase activity. The methods we studied is relatively insensitive to these two factors, a conclusion we base on both experimental results and theoretical analysis. These findings are in conflict with a recently published report [Lott et al., Clin. Chem. 24, 938 (1978)], and we suggest a possible explanation for this.

The Relationship

Nickel layers with tensile or pressure residual stress were prepared by electroforming technique from two kinds of electrolyte. Subsequent heat treatment was adopted to get the stress released. The coefficients of thermal expansion (CTEs) were measured with a thermal dilatometer and the relationship between residual stress and the measured CTEs was revealed both from experimental results and theoretical analysis.

Good understanding of friction in tire-road interaction is of critical importance for vehicle dynamic control systems. Most of the friction models proposed to describe the friction coefficient between tire-treads and road surfaces have been developed based on empirical or semi-empirical relations that are not able to include many effective parameters involved in the tire-road interactions. Therefore, these models are just useful in limited conditions similar to the experiments, and do not accurately represent tire-road traction in numerical tire models. However, in last two decades, a few theoretical models have been developed to calculate the tire-road friction coefficient theoretically by considering both viscoelastic behavior of tire tread compounds and multi-scale interactions between tire treads and rough road surfaces. In this article, a novel physics-based model proposed by Persson has been investigated and used to develop computer algorithms for calculation of sliding friction coefficient between a tire tread compound and a rough substrate. The viscoelastic behavior of tread compound and the surface profile of rough counter surface are the inputs of this physics-based theoretical model. The numerical results of the model have been compared with the experimental results obtained from a dynamic friction tester designed and built in the Center for Tire Research (CenTire). Good agreement between numerical results of theoretical model and experimental results has been found at intermediate range of slip velocities considering the effect of adhesion and shearing in the real contact area in addition to hysteresis friction due to internal energy dissipation in the tire tread compound.

In this paper, the interaction of a broadband Rayleigh wave generated by a laser and an artificial rectangular notch is analyzed theoretically and experimentally. For the theoretical analysis, a Gaussian function is adopted to analyze the modulation of notch depth on the frequency spectrum via reflection and transmission coefficients. By the finite element method, the Rayleigh wave generated by pulsed laser beam irradiation and its scattering waves at cracks are calculated. A curve with a slope close to 4 fitted by crack depth and critical wavelength of the threshold phenomenon is obtained by the wavelet transform and Parseval’s theorem according to simulated and experimental results. Based on this relationship, the critical frequency at which the threshold phenomenon happens due to energy transformation of transmission/reflection Rayleigh waves is adopted to determine the size of sub-wavelength surface crack. The experimental results of artificial notch depth estimation on aluminum alloy specimens consistent with theoretical analysis validates the usefulness of the critical frequency method based on a broadband Rayleigh wave generated by laser ultrasonic.
