An experimental study of the heat transfer characteristics of flows between a high speed rotating disk and a parallel stationary shroud is presented. Flow and disk heat transfer rates have been determined for various combinations and rates of freely induced and forced flows supplied at both the hub and rim of the disk. The study models a practically important class of turbine rotor cooling problems where small flow rates similar in magnitude to the disk pumping flows are of interest. The experimental facility and procedures are described in detail. They have been designed to facilitate rapid and economical acquisition of rotor cooling characteristics in situations where the particular rotor-shroud geometry makes existing correlations inadequate.

AbstractThe nanofluids owing to their alluring attributes like enhanced thermal conductivity and better heat transfer characteristics have a vast variety of applications ranging from space technology to nuclear reactors etc. The present study highlights the Ostwald-de-Waele nanofluid flow past a rotating disk of variable thickness in a porous medium with a melting heat transfer phenomenon. The surface catalyzed reaction is added to the homogeneous-heterogeneous reaction that triggers the rate of the chemical reaction. The added feature of the variable thermal conductivity and the viscosity instead of their constant values also boosts the novelty of the undertaken problem. The modeled problem is erected in the form of a system of partial differential equations. Engaging similarity transformation, the set of ordinary differential equations are obtained. The coupled equations are numerically solved by using the bvp4c built-in MATLAB function. The drag coefficient and Nusselt number are plotted for arising parameters. The results revealed that increasing surface catalyzed parameter causes a decline in thermal profile more efficiently. Further, the power-law index is more influential than the variable thickness disk index. The numerical results show that variations in dimensionless thickness coefficient do not make any effect. However, increasing power-law index causing an upsurge in radial, axial, tangential, velocities, and thermal profile.

AbstractThe current research explores incremental effect of thermal radiation on heat transfer improvement corresponds to Darcy–Forchheimer (DF) flow of carbon nanotubes along a stretched rotating surface using RSM. Casson carbon nanotubes’ constructed model in boundary layer flow is being investigated with implications of both single-walled CNTs and multi-walled CNTs. Water and Ethylene glycol are considered a basic fluid. The heat transfer rate is scrutinized via convective condition. Outcomes are observed and evaluated for both SWCNTs and MWCNTs. The Runge–Kutta Fehlberg technique of shooting is utilized to numerically solve transformed nonlinear ordinary differential system. The output parameters of interest are presumed to depend on governing input variables. In addition, sensitivity study is incorporated. It is noted that sensitivity of SFC via SWCNT-Water becomes higher by increasing values of permeability number. Additionaly, sensitivity of SFC via SWCNT-water towards the permeability number is higher than the solid volume fraction for medium and higher permeability levels. It is also noted that sensitivity of SFC (SWCNT-Ethylene-glycol) towards volume fraction is higher for increasing permeability as well as inertia coefficient. Additionally, the sensitivity of LNN towards the Solid volume fraction is higher than the radiation and Biot number for all levels of Biot number. The findings will provide initial direction for future device manufacturing.

The liquid crystal thermography can be successfully used in both transient and steady-state heat transfer experiments with excellent spatial resolution and good accuracy. Although most of the past liquid crystal based heat transfer studies are reported in the stationary frame, measurements from the rotating frame of turbomachinery systems exist The main objective of the present investigation is to determine the influence of rotation on the color calibration of encapsulated liquid crystals sprayed on the flat surface of a rotating aluminum disk. The investigation is performed for a rotational speed range from 0 rpm to 7500 rpm using three different liquid crystal coatings displaying red at 30, 35 and 45° C, under stationary conditions. An immediate observation from the present study is that the color response of liquid crystals is strongly modified by the centrifugal acceleration of the rotating environment. It is consistently and repeatedly observed that the hue versus temperature curve is continuously shifted toward lower temperatures by increasing rotational speed. The relative shift of the display temperature of the green can be as high as 7°C at 7500 rpm when compared to the temperature of the green observed under stationary conditions. The present study shows that relative shift of the liquid crystal color has a well-defined functional dependency to rotational speed. The shift is linearly proportional to the centrifugal acceleration. It is interesting to note that the individual shift curves of the green for all three liquid crystal coatings collapse into a single curve when they are normalized with respect to their own stationary green values. When the color attribute is selected as “intensity” instead of “hue”, very similar shifts of the temperature corresponding to the intensity maximum value appearing around green is observed. An interpretation of the observed color shift is made from a thermodynamics energy balance point of view.

This paper compares heat transfer measurements from a preswirl rotor–stator experiment with three-dimensional (3D) steady-state results from a commercial computational fluid dynamics (CFD) code. The measured distribution of Nusselt number on the rotor surface was obtained from a scaled model of a gas turbine rotor–stator system, where the flow structure is representative of that found in an engine. Computations were carried out using a coupled multigrid Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) solver with a high Reynolds number k-ε∕k-ω turbulence model. Previous work has identified three parameters governing heat transfer: rotational Reynolds number (Reϕ), preswirl ratio (βp), and the turbulent flow parameter (λT). For this study rotational Reynolds numbers are in the range 0.8×106<Reϕ<1.2×106. The turbulent flow parameter and preswirl ratios varied between 0.12<λT<0.38 and 0.5<βp<1.5, which are comparable to values that occur in industrial gas turbines. Two performance parameters have been calculated: the adiabatic effectiveness for the system, Θb,ad, and the discharge coefficient for the receiver holes, CD. The computations show that, although Θb,ad increases monotonically as βp increases, there is a critical value of βp at which CD is a maximum. At high coolant flow rates, computations have predicted peaks in heat transfer at the radius of the preswirl nozzles. These were discovered during earlier experiments and are associated with the impingement of the preswirl flow on the rotor disk. At lower flow rates, the heat transfer is controlled by boundary-layer effects. The Nusselt number on the rotating disk increases as either Reϕ or λT increases, and is axisymmetric except in the region of the receiver holes, where significant two-dimensional variations are observed. The computed velocity field is used to explain the heat transfer distributions observed in the experiments. The regions of peak heat transfer around the receiver holes are a consequence of the route taken by the flow. Two routes have been identified: “direct,” whereby flow forms a stream tube between the inlet and outlet; and “indirect,” whereby flow mixes with the rotating core of fluid.
