The Ocean as a Renewable Source of Energy

The oceans and their environment have long been envisioned as renewable sources of energy. It is the purpose of this paper to assess the feasibility of drawing on the sea for power and to determine the extent to which the oceans are likely to serve future energy needs. A review is made of recent U. S. funding levels for the research and development of renewable energy sources during the fiscal years 1971–1975, and a study is made of the technical and environmertal acceptability status of tidal, wind, and sea thermal power generation systems. The estimated costs of these environmental power sources are compared with the prevailing power costs for nuclear and coal plants. On the basis of these comparisons, recommendations are made for a program of research and development culminating in the construction of prototype plants for wind and sea thermal power plants. Tidal power generation is found to be technically feasible but economically uninviting at present.

With the formation of an international carbon-neutral framework, interest in reducing greenhouse gas emissions is increasing. Ammonia is a carbon-free fuel that can be directly combusted with the role of an effective hydrogen energy carrier, and its application range is expanding. In particular, as research results applied to power generation systems such as gas turbines and coal-fired power plants have been reported, the technology to use them is gradually being advanced. In the present study, starting with a fundamental combustion research case conducted to use ammonia as a fuel, the application research case for gas turbines and coal-fired power plants was analyzed. Finally, we report the results of the ammonia-air burning flame and pulverized coal-ammonia-air co-fired research conducted at the authors’ research institute.

The paper dwells upon the problem of multi-criteria choice of ways to develop generating capacities to supply power to remote consumers. We herein propose a two-step multi-criteria analysis method: choosing promising power-generation technology first, and then specifying the generating-capacity structure. The paper describes the structure of the proposed multi-criteria methods: the interval TOPSIS method for Step 1; for Step 2, an upgraded analytic hierarchy process based on identifying the structure of the decision maker’s preferences. We demonstrate the use of this method with evidence from the Penzhinsky District, Kamchatka Krai. Thermal power plants, hydroelectric power plants, diesel power plants, as well as solar and wind power are analyzed as power sources. Step 1 includes: analyzing the potential power-supply loads in a specific area; formulating alternative power-generation technology; formulating goals and criteria; criterion-based evaluation of alternative options using objective and subjective models; multi-criteria evaluation of alternatives; analyzing the sensitivity of results and the selection of promising technology. Step 2 includes: formulating goals and criteria on the basis of the selected power-generation technologies; formulating the available alternatives; criterion-based evaluation of alternatives; multi-criteria evaluation and final decision-making.

For decades, Mauritania's economy has been fueled by thermal power.  As a developing economy, Mauritania's electricity demand has long been relatively low, though it has increased recently due to economic growth, urbanization, and industrial activities. The rapid growth in demand is making the country more dependent on oil and gas-based generation power plants, which a resultant drain on the national economy. However, Mauritania has abundant renewable energy potential. the deployment of renewable energy can be an alternative solution to reduce the dependence on fossil resources. In this paper, we have reviewed the situation of the power generation sector, the potential of renewable energy, the integration of renewable energy in Mauritania's energy mix and the mitigation potential. The installed capacity in 2018 is 415.5 MW. The percentage of thermal power plants is 59.8% and 40.2% of the integrated capacity is provided by renewable energy. In 2018, the total electric power generation was 1958.5 GWh, the contribution of renewable energy was 979.75 GWh. The IPCC 2006 methodology was used to estimate GHG emissions. The results showed that the integration of renewable energy into the country's energy mix reduced emissions by approximately 212.58 Gg CO2eq.


Many people in rural society of India does not have access to natural energy resources like LPG , electricity as there is no facilitation of grid erection. Hence it becomes imperative for country like India to go for renewable energy resources as alternative to conventional energy resources. This paper evaluations the potential of different sources of renewable energy in India. It also highlights the trends in the growth of renewable energy sector, although at the same time shows that there is need of a hybrid renewable energy model for rural electrification in India. Paper also shows the scope in using the agriculture waste as bio fuel which burned otherwise and prompt health hazards besides environmental pollution, also describing many technologies which are in the demonstration stage like Tidal, OTEC, Solar thermal power plants. Many constraints put development in the field of solar and wind sector, on hold like availability of solar rays throughout the year . The main aim of the paper is to evaluation all possible options in renewable energy sector so that large segment of rural population can have access to electricity and to meet their basic energy needs.
