When heavy equipment is moved by cranes or derricks—for example, in the course of manufacturing, assembly, or installation—the rigging or hitch used should be stable, i.e., it should not dump the load in the course of its motion. A general criterion is derived which is necessary and sufficient for Liapunov stability or asymptotic stability of a hitch. The relationship between asymptotic stability and stability under persistent disturbances is discussed, and an analytical expression for the system margin of stability is obtained.

Abstract The study of properties of switched and hybrid systems gives rise to a number of interesting and challenging mathematical problems. This paper aims to briefly survey recent results on stability and controllability of switched linear systems. First, the stability analysis for switched systems is reviewed. We focus on the stability analysis for switched linear systems under arbitrary switching, and we highlight necessary and sufficient conditions for asymptotic stability. After that, we review the controllability results.

The certain and uncertain neutral systems with time-delay and saturating actuator are considered in this paper. In order to analyse and optimize the system, auxiliary functions are presented based on additive decomposition approach and the relationship among them is discussed. As the novel stability criterion, two sufficient conditions are obtained for asymptotic stability of the neutral systems. Furthermore, the paper gives the stability analysis algorithm and optimality algorithm to optimize the result. Finally, from the two-stage dissolution tank of solid caustic soda in a chemical plant, three numerical examples are implemented to show the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Using the invariance principle of LaSalle [1], sufficient conditions for the existence of linear and nonlinear control laws for local and global asymptotic stability of nonlinear Hamiltonian systems are derived. An instability theorem is also presented which identifies the control laws from the given class which cannot achieve asymptotic stability. Some of the stability results are based on certain results for the univalence of nonlinear maps. A similar approach for the stabilization of bilinear systems which include nonconservative systems in elasticity is used and a necessary and sufficient condition for stabilization is obtained. An application to attitude control of a gyrostat Satellite is presented.

Systems possessing symmetries often admit robust heteroclinic cycles that persist under perturbations that respect the symmetry. In previous work, we began a systematic investigation into the asymptotic stability of such cycles. In particular, we found a sufficient condition for asymptotic stability, and we gave algebraic criteria for deciding when this condition is also necessary. These criteria are satisfied for cycles in R3.Field and Swift, and Hofbauer, considered examples in R4 for which our sufficient condition for stability is not optimal. They obtained necessary and sufficient conditions for asymptotic stability using a transition-matrix technique.In this paper, we combine our previous methods with the transition-matrix technique and obtain necessary and sufficient conditions for asymptotic stability for a larger class of heteroclinic cycles. In particular, we obtain a complete theory for ‘simple’ heteroclinic cycles in R4 (thereby proving and extending results for homoclinic cycles that were stated without proof by Chossat, Krupa, Melbourne and Scheel). A partial classification of simple heteroclinic cycles in R4 is also given. Finally, our stability results generalize naturally to higher dimensions and many of the higher-dimensional examples in the literature are covered by this theory.

The relationship between the spectra of $M_C$ and $M_0,$ and theirvarious distinguished parts, has been studied by a large number of authors inthe recent past. This paper brings forth the important role played by SVEP,the {\it single-valued extension property,} in the study of some of these relations. In this work, we prove necessary and sufficient conditions of implication of the type $M_0$ satisfies property $(w)$ $\Leftrightarrow$ $M_C$ satisfies property $(w)$ to hold. Moreover, we explore certain conditions on $T\in\LB(\hh)$ and $S\in\LB(\K)$ so that the direct sum $T\oplus S$ obeys property $(w)$, where $\hh$ and $\K$ are Hilbert spaces.

AbstractThe purpose of this paper is to examine the relationship between the quotient problem for right noetherian nonsingular rings and the quotient problem for semicritical rings. It is shown that a right noetherian nonsingular ring R has an artinian classical quotient ring iff certain semicritical factor rings R/Ki, i = 1,…,n, possess artinian classical quotient rings and regular elements in R/Ki lift to regular elements of R for all i. If R is a two sided noetherian nonsingular ring, then the existence of an artinian classical quotient ring is equivalent to each R/Ki possessing an artinian classical quotient ring and the right Krull primes of R consisting of minimal prime ideals. If R is also weakly right ideal invariant, then the former condition is redundant. Necessary and sufficient conditions are found for a nonsingular semicritical ring to have an artinian classical quotient ring.

A matrix is a Q0-matrix if for every k∈{1,2,…,n}, the sum of all k×k principal minors is nonnegative. In this paper, we study some necessary and sufficient conditions for a digraph to have Q0-completion. Later on we discuss the relationship between Q and Q0-matrix completion problem. Finally, a classification of the digraphs of order up to four is done based on Q0-completion.
