This paper presents a general solution for a thin ring under a self-equilibrating loading system comprising any combination of radial, tangential, and moment loads. The formulations are applicable to concentrated loads as well as to distributed load functions. Closed-form solutions are obtained for each case for engineering applications. Comparisons with recent published results for some special cases are demonstrated in some of the sample problems.

This paper develops a general theory whereby the effects of the elastic distortions of a planet bearing outer ring due to gear loads and inertial forces on the bearing load distribution and fatigue life can be considered. The analysis makes use of a recently developed solution for a thin elastic ring under an arbitrary system of loads. A numerical example for a planet gear roller bearing under heavy gear loads and operating at a high speed is presented.

The buckling of a thin, elastic ring confined in an elliptical hole whose circumference is smaller than that of the ring is studied. The effect of post-buckling slippage of the ring along the boundary with a corresponding curvature change is included. Buckling configurations with no friction that are (a) symmetric to one axis, and (b) symmetric to both axes, and (c) buckling configurations with no-slip are presented. Buckling with a strain energy consideration added as a criterion and buckling merely from compatibility alone are discussed. Results include curves for buckling loads of different ellipticities for different radius-to-thickness ratios.

The elastic ring is widely used in elastic support structures of aero-engine because of its simple structure and convenient manufacturing. In this paper, two elastic ring models, 3D and 2D models, are proposed, where the fillets between the bulges and ring are considered. The 2D model is more efficient for the calculation of stiffness characteristics. The 3D model can be used to obtain the maximum stress position in the axial direction. Then the experimental testing is carried out to verify the accuracy and effectiveness of the proposed models. Based on the proposed models, the stiffness nonlinearity and critical load of the elastic ring are found for the first time, which can be used to determine the normal working load range. Moreover, the elastic ring models with and without fillets are developed, and the effect of the fillets on stress is discussed. The results show that the stress is reduced by considering the fillets, which are not considered in the existing literature.

Abstract A preprocessor providing the inertia data of elastic bodies for multibody algorithms is considered. The desired capability of including stress stiffening terms leads to a high computational effort. The method presented allows a straight forward implementation of the basic formulas by starting with the development of a special purpose symbolic calculator. A rotating elastic ring serves as an example.
