A Design Methodology for Obtaining Infinite Stiffness in an Aerostatic Thrust Bearing

The desire to maintain high positional accuracy has led to many unique bearing designs which achieve high, and even infinite, stiffness. This paper presents a design procedure for an aerostatic thrust bearing and demonstrates that infinite stiffness may be attained by proper selection of the bearing’s geometric parameters. The bearing is comprised of two main components; the bearing housing and a flexible membrane that deflects due to changes in load. The current analysis employs plate equations to approximate the behavior of the membrane. Optimization techniques are utilized in the design algorithm and the results are presented in the form of a design chart or nomograph. Additionally, so that the results may be extended to other bearing sizes and gas properties, scaling laws are developed based on a dimensional analysis of the associated variables.

The design of a novel Schönflies-Motion Generator (SMG) is the focus of the paper. Schönflies motions are characterized by four degrees of freedom three independent translations and one rotation about one axis of fixed orientation. The two driving modules of the manipulator are based on differential transmissions. Then, the design philosophy and the layout of the SMG are discussed, along with the design procedure. This procedure includes: (i) part-modelling and visualization, with animation of the device; (ii) evaluation of the main parameters and the characteristics of the different structural realizations, as well as the selection of one single structure meeting best the design specifications; (iii) the design of the main components for the selected variant of the structure; and (iv) the production of detailed manufacturing drawings. Further results of structural and modal analyses of the SMG are considered, while the link geometry is defined based on the design specifications.

Abstract The tire technology related with the computational mechanics is reviewed from the standpoint of yesterday, today, and tomorrow. Yesterday: A finite element method was developed in the 1950s as a tool of computational mechanics. In the tire manufacturers, finite element analysis (FEA) was started applying to a tire analysis in the beginning of 1970s and this was much earlier than the vehicle industry, electric industry, and others. The main reason was that construction and configurations of a tire were so complicated that analytical approach could not solve many problems related with tire mechanics. Since commercial software was not so popular in 1970s, in-house axisymmetric codes were developed for three kinds of application such as stress/strain, heat conduction, and modal analysis. Since FEA could make the stress/strain visible in a tire, the application area was mainly tire durability. Today: combining FEA with optimization techniques, the tire design procedure is drastically changed in side wall shape, tire crown shape, pitch variation, tire pattern, etc. So the computational mechanics becomes an indispensable tool for tire industry. Furthermore, an insight to improve tire performance is obtained from the optimized solution and the new technologies were created from the insight. Then, FEA is applied to various areas such as hydroplaning and snow traction based on the formulation of fluid–tire interaction. Since the computational mechanics enables us to see what we could not see, new tire patterns were developed by seeing the streamline in tire contact area and shear stress in snow in traction.Tomorrow: The computational mechanics will be applied in multidisciplinary areas and nano-scale areas to create new technologies. The environmental subjects will be more important such as rolling resistance, noise and wear.

The different design trajectories have been analyzed in the design space on the basis of the new system design methodology. Optimal position of the design algorithm start point was analyzed to minimize the CPU time. The initial point selection has been done on the basis of the before discovered acceleration effect of the system design process. The geometrical dividing surface was defined and analyzed to obtain the optimal position of the algorithm start point. The numerical results of the design of passive and active nonlinear electronic circuits confirm the possibility of the optimal selection of the starting point of the design algorithm.

The author has studied the problem of the development of theoretical foundations and methodical tools for conducting job research within the National Police of Ukraine. The author has stated theoretical grounds of creating a profile for the profession of a detective; has revealed the possibilities of using some methods and means of job research for the development of modern profiles of the professions of the system of the National Police of Ukraine. It has been demonstrated that a profile of the profession as a set of parameters characterizing a successful specialist, a professional in a certain field of professional activity, is an important component of the job description. The main component of the profile is the characteristic of psychological peculiarities of professional activity.On the basis of experimental research, the author has formulated the requirements of the profession to the motivational sphere of a specialist, his abilities, temperamental and characterological traits, etc. The main components of the profile of a detective’s profession have been considered. The author has described such structural components of the profile of the profession as general characteristics of the activity, working conditions, negative factors, occupational risk factors, psychological characteristics and professionally important personal qualities of a specialist. The author has provided the demands of the profession to the sensory and perceptual sphere of a detective, general and special abilities, the features of temperament and character, motivation, emotional and volitional qualities. It has been emphasized that comprehensive study of professional police activity based on the development of profiles of the profession is a prerequisite for solving problems related to the efficiency of using personnel potential, optimizing the selection of the most appropriate candidates for the police force, training and retraining of personnel, rationalization of work and reduction of injuries, etc.On the basis of a broad experimental study, the author has established the list of the main professional qualities of a detective of the National Police; has determined the qualitative and quantitative psychological and psychophysiological indicators recommended for the professional activity. The author has also established psychological and psychophysiological contraindications for overtaking the professional activity of a detective (a criminal police officer).

“Flying machining” represents synchronization of an axis (slave) with a master axis in motion. One of the most important aspects of the design of “flying machining” operation is the choice of the proper law of motion of the slave axis. In literature, technical reports and papers can be found concerning this subject, but they deal with specific problems and the solutions or suggestions proposed are specific as well, suitable for those cases. In order to try to overcome this limitation, in this paper we analyze the subject of the flying machining operations from a wider point of view. We propose a unified design procedure with general validity, suitable for the choice of the slave axis’ law of motion for whatever “flying machining” operation. Furthermore methodologies for the selection of the drive system will be proposed. The procedure is described applying it on a cross sealing operation, typical of wrapping machine.

The work purpose consists in the analysis of the situation in passenger transportation of countryside and bus distribution on routes. The route investigation was carried out at different daytime by means of passenger number calculation and data recordings in the prepared tables during a day, a week, a month and also during the year, that is, using a calculating-table method. The analysis of bus operation on a route allowed drawing conclusions that this route may be favorable for investors and economically profitable. Besides, it is socially necessary for low-income population groups having no their transport vehicles. The investigation novelty consists in the adaptation of a calculating-table method to rural routes. Conclusions: modern automobile passenger transportation company is impossible without efficient passenger transportation management; one of the main components in passenger transportation management is passenger service improvement, which can be achieved only by empiric investigations of passenger flows on the routes; at the proper selection of vehicles the analyzed car route can be commercially profitable and long-term that is ensured by a quantitative analysis of vehicles and specification of bus schedule taking into account the need of population in travels.

The purpose of this research is to understand and analyze the lifestyles of the Generation Z which is formed because of their status as a Korean Wave fanatic fan. This study uses ethnographic research methods consisting of participation observation and depth interviews with five Generation Z of women who are fanatic fan of the Korean Wave. Based on the results of this study, there are four main components which are the factors why the Generation Z becomes fanatically attached with the Korean Wave, (1) high level of admiration and likes, (2) addiction, (3) feeling of wanting, and (4) loyalty. This paper then saw that the element of fanaticism inherent in Generation Z, which lead to indirect creation of a flow of the process of forming their lifestyle identity, which are the selection of Korean Wave as entertainment, spending a lot of time doing activities related to the Korean Wave, and use the money for the Korean Wave.

The feature selection problem involves the selection of a subset of features that will be sufficient for the determination of structures or clusters in a given dataset and in making predictions. This chapter presents an algorithm for feature selection, which is based on the methods of optimization. To verify the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm we applied it to a number of publicly available real-world databases. The results of numerical experiments are presented and discussed. These results demonstrate that the algorithm performs well on the datasets considered.

Our objective was to determine whether formal decision analysis could assist fishery managers in Oregon to evaluate alternative strategies with respect to allocation and production of wild and hatchery coho salmon. The method chosen given multiple objectives and uncertainty is multiattribute utility analysis. The analytical model consists of two main components: (1) a computer model that simulates the life cycle of hatchery and stream spawning coho salmon given environmental variation, different hatchery juvenile release levels, and harvest rates and (2) an objective function that evaluates the aggregate levels of catch and escapement resulting from alternative release levels and harvest rates. The approach was used to rank the expected outcomes from 12 proposed policies. We concluded that (1) the most effective policy is achieved with a relatively low harvest rate and high smolt release level, (2) selection of a particular harvest rate is the most important decision variable, and (3) a large smolt release level can be maintained unless such releases adversely decrease the ocean survival of stream spawning coho. If the agency is to be significantly helped, the analysis must be expanded to involve a larger number of decision makers, incorporate additional objectives such as catch variability, and include a finer level of detail in the simulation model.
