The effects of artificially-produced dents and grooves on the elastohydrodynamic (EHD) film thickness profile in a sliding point contact are investigated by means of optical interferometry. The defects, formed on the surface of a highly polished ball, are held stationary at various locations within and in the vicinity of the contact region while the disk is rotating. It is shown that the defects, having a geometry similar to what can be expected in practice, can dramatically change the film thickness which exists when no defects are present in or near the contact. This change in film thickness is mainly a function of the position of the defects in the inlet region, the geometry of the defects, the orientation of the defects in the case of grooves, and the depth of the defect relative to the central film thickness.

The effects of surface kinematic conditions on micro-elastohydrodynamic lubrication (micro-EHL) are investigated under rolling and/or sliding point contact conditions using the optical interferometry technique. A long bump of chromium sputtered on the surface of a highly polished ball is used as a model asperity. It is shown that the film thickness distribution or the elastic deformation of the bump is influenced significantly by the surface kinematic conditions and the orientation of the bump. An interesting phenomenon is also found when contacting surfaces move with different speeds; the thin film formed on a transversely oriented bump existing at the entrance of the contact travels through the contact region at the average speed of the surfaces. The experimental results obtained qualitatively confirm published numerical simulations.

This article presents a thermal resistances-based approach for solving the thermal-elastohydrodynamic lubrication problem in point contact, taking the lubricant rheology into account. The friction coefficient in the contact is estimated, along with the distribution of both film thickness and temperature. A commercial tribometer is used in order to measure the friction coefficient at a ball-on-disc point contact lubricated with a polyalphaolefin base. These data and other experimental results available in the bibliography are compared to those obtained by using the proposed methodology, and thermal effects are analysed. The new approach shows good accuracy for predicting the friction coefficient and requires less computational cost than full thermal-elastohydrodynamic simulations.


A technique using Newton’s rings for mapping the oil film of lubricated point contacts is described. A theoretical value for the film thickness of such contacts in elastohydrodynamic lubrication is derived. The experimental results give the exit constriction predicted by previous theory but never shown in detail. The comparison of theoretical and experimental oil film thicknesses, which is satisfactorily accurate, gives strong evidence for a viscous surface layer some 1000Å thick. This film agrees with the known ‘lubricating power’ of the various oils tested.

Lubricant film-forming viscosity index improvers blended with commercial engine oil have been developed and studied by using optical interferometry. The influence of the viscosity index improvers (PTFE and MoS2) mixed with oil were experimentally studied and compared with engine oil without the index improvers as the baseline. The effect of the viscosity index improvers on lubricant film thickness, contact pressure and rolling speed for the case of a steel ball loaded on a flat glass surface in point contact condition was investigated. An optical interferometry technique which utilized a monochromatic two-beam interferometry light source, a microscope and a high-speed video recording device was used for the investigation. Hamrock and Dawson calculations for EHL film thickness were also used for comparative analysis. The lubricants used were commercial SAE #30 engine oil and PTFE and MoS2 mixed with commercial SAE #30 engine oil. The oil viscosities ranged from 0.0109 Pa.s to 0.255 Pa.s. The rolling speed and the loads were varied between 0.189 m/s to 0.641 m/s and 1 N to 2.6 N respectively. The lubricant film thickness stability at the point of contact between the steel ball and the glass disc was investigated for both steady and rolling state conditions. The viscosity index improvers were found to have a significant effect on the film thickness behavior under pure rolling point contact conditions.

Fifty-seven measurements of the minimum lubricant film thickness separating the elastohydrodynamically lubricated point contact of a steel crowned roller and a flat sapphire disk were made by an optical interferometry technique. The data collected were used to evaluate the Hamrock and Dowson minimum EHD film thickness model over a practical range of contact ellipticity ratio where the major axis of the contact ellipse is aligned both parallel and perpendicular to the direction of motion. A statistical analysis of the measured film thickness data showed that the experimental data averaged 30 percent greater film thickness than the Hamrock and Dowson model predicts.

This study investigates the influences of coating material properties and coating thickness on lubricant film thickness based on a point-contact isothermal EHL model developed recently by the authors. The results present the trend of minimum film thickness variation as a function of coating thickness and elastic modulus under a wide range of working conditions. Numerical results indicates that the increase in minimum film thickness, Imax, and the corresponding optimal dimensionless coating thickness, H2, can be expressed in the following formulas: Imax=0.766M0.0248R20.0296L0.1379exp(−0.0245ln2L)H2=0.049M0.4557R2−0.1722L0.7611exp(−0.0504ln2M−0.0921ln2L) These formulas can be used to estimate the effect of a coating on EHL film thickness.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to study the behavior of a single ridge passing through elastohydrodynamic lubrication of point contacts problem for different ridge shapes and sizes, including flat-top, triangular and cosine wave pattern to get an optimal ridge profile. Design/methodology/approach The time-dependent Reynolds’ equation is solved using Newton–Raphson technique. Several shapes of surface feature are simulated and the film thickness and pressure distribution are obtained at every time step by simultaneous solution of the Reynolds’ equation and film thickness equation, including elastic deformation. Film thickness and pressure distribution are chosen to be the criteria in the comparisons. Findings The geometrical characteristics of the ridge play an important role in the formation of lubricant film thickness profile and the pressure distribution through the contact zone. To minimize wear, friction and fatigue life, an optimal ridge profile should have smooth shape with small ridge size. Obtained results are compared with other published numerical results and show a good agreement. Originality/value The study evaluates the performance of different surface features of a single ridge with different shapes and sizes passing through elastohydrodynamic of point contact problem in relation to film thickness and pressure profile.

This paper describes an experimental investigation of the elastohydrodynamic problem. The investigation was limited to a study of nominal point contacts in pure sliding motion. The profile of the lubricant film separating the bearing surfaces was determined during a transient of the normal load. During this transient the Hertzian contact stresses were increased from zero to a maximum of 150,000 lbf/in2 in approximately 45 milli-secs. The sliding velocities used in this study were varied from 13.7 to 92.1 ips. The resulting mean shear rate, however, was typically 107 reciprocal seconds. Both pure and polymer-blended naphthenic and paraffinic oils, in addition to several synthetic fluids, were studied. On the basis of the film thickness profiles obtained for the polymer-blended oils, it was concluded that the ambient value of viscosity often used in theoretical considerations does not characterize the behavior of the system. It was also found that the rapid application of the normal load had a negligible effect on the film thickness profile. During this investigation the contact traction was also measured. The results of those measurements are reported in the companion paper, “Fluid Rheological Effects in Sliding Elastohydrodynamic Point Contacts With Transient Loading: II—Traction.”

Heavily loaded point elastohydrodynamically lubricated (EHL) contacts involved in steady purely transitional, skewed transitional, and transitional with spinning motions are considered. It is shown that in the central parts of the inlet and exit zones of such heavily loaded point EHL contacts the asymptotic equations governing the EHL problem along the lubricant flow streamlines for the above types of contact motions can be reduced to two sets of asymptotic equations: one in the inlet and one in the exit zones. The latter sets of equations are identical to the asymptotic equations describing lubrication process in the inlet and exit zones of the corresponding heavily loaded line EHL contact (Kudish, I. I., 2013, Elastohydrodynamic Lubrication for Line and Point Contacts: Asymptotic and Numerical Approaches, Chapman and Hall/CRC). For each specific motion of a point contact, a separate set of formulas for the lubrication film thickness is obtained. For different types of contact motions, these film thickness formulas differ significantly (Kudish, I. I., 2013, Elastohydrodynamic Lubrication for Line and Point Contacts: Asymptotic and Numerical Approaches, Chapman and Hall/CRC). For heavily loaded contacts, the discovered relationship between point and line EHL problems allows to apply to point contacts most of the results obtained for line contacts (Kudish, I. I., 2013, Elastohydrodynamic Lubrication for Line and Point Contacts: Asymptotic and Numerical Approaches, Chapman and Hall/CRC; Kudish, I. I., and Covitch, M. J., 2010, Modeling and Analytical Methods in Tribology, Chapman and Hall/CRC).
