This paper presents a computer aided design for machining (DFMc) platform that enables designers to customize the design for the available machine tools and to estimate the effect of design decisions on the accuracy of the final machined products, particularly those containing sculptured surfaces. The platform contains two modules to model and simulate the actual machined surface and to evaluate the resulting minimum deviation zone compared to the desired geometry. In the first module, based on the configuration of the available machine tool and the limitations imposed by its inherent errors, the machined surface is simulated and presented as a nonuniform rational B-spline (NURBS) surface. In the second module, the minimum deviation zone between the actual and the nominal NURBS surfaces is evaluated when the developed method to do this task efficiently improves the convergence of the resulting optimization process. Utilizing this platform, two different applications are developed; design tolerance allocation based on the minimum deviation zone of the machined surface and adaptation of the nominal design to compensate for the effect of machining errors. Employing these applications during the design stage improves the acceptance rate of the produced parts and reduces the rate of scrap and rework. The DFMc platform and its presented applications can be implemented in any integrated computer aided design/computer aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) system. The presented methods can be applied to any type of input geometries and are particularly efficient for design and manufacturing of precise components with complex surfaces. Products in this group, such as dies and tools, medical instruments, and biomedical implants, mostly have critical and important functionalities that demand very careful design and manufacturing decisions.

The timing scroll is an important feeding mechanism on packaging lines. As packaging line speeds have increased and the shape of containers has become more diverse, the techniques used for the design and manufacture of such timing scrolls have become critical for successful packaging line performance. Since 1980, various techniques have evolved to improve scroll design, manufacture and the associated line performance. In recent years, as CAD (computer aided design), CAM (computer aided manufacture) and CNC (computer numerical control) techniques have evolved, scroll design and manufacturing techniques began to be linked with computer techniques. In this paper, a scroll design and manufacturing package is presented which can be run on a minicomputer, such as a μ-VAX on an IBM PC clone. This scroll package can produce a timing scroll for any type of container with a correct pocket shape and good dynamic characteristic. Tests using carefully chosen containers have been made using this package and the results indicate that the scrolls obtained by this package have the correct pocket shape and good line performance. However, the design of a good pick-up geometry for some container shapes remains a problem.

Statement of the problem. In order to obtain optimal design solutions that meet the conditions of safety traffic in difficult weather conditions, it is necessary to compare the options of highways according to the snow tolerance conditions. Such calculations should become an integral part of the CAD-AD computer-aided design system. Results. A systematic approach to solving the problem is set forth, a list of information necessary for calculations is identified. The results analysis of studies on the snow-bearing capacity of roads conducted in Russia and abroad is carried out. Calculation schemes and models are suggested to evaluate options for the longitudinal profile and the roadbed for the snow-bearing capacity. Solutions for evaluating variants of the route plan using maps with calculated parameters of snowstorms are proposed. Conclusions. The implementation of the proposed calculation methodology will make it possible at the design stage to evaluate the options of the highway according to the conditions of the snow-bearing capacity.
