The Mass Transfer Analogy to Heat Transfer in Fluids With Temperature-Dependent Properties

The analogy between heat transfer in a single-component fluid and isothermal mass transfer of a two-component fluid without chemical reaction is presented. The analogy is well established and frequently used for fluids with constant properties. However, in various applications such as in the cooling of hot components in gas turbines, the temperature varies widely, causing significant fluid property variations. The present paper reviews the constant-property situation and considers in detail the conditions necessary to ensure similarity of the two transport processes with temperature and concentration-dependent fluid properties. An application of the variable property analogy to mass transfer in binary mixtures is presented along with specific recommendations for the CO2–air and Freon-air systems. It is demonstrated that the essential similarity conditions of the analogy are very well fulfilled for film cooling, total coverage film cooling, and impingement cooling when the heat (mass) flux into the wall in the transport process is zero. The heat/mass transfer analogy can, therefore, be used with confidence for these processes.

Cooling techniques play a key role in improving efficiency and power output of modern gas turbines. The conjugate technique of film and impingement cooling schemes is considered in this study. The Multi-Stage Cooling Scheme (MSCS) involves coolant passing from inside to outside turbine blade through two stages. The first stage; the coolant passes through first hole to internal gap where the impinging jet cools the external layer of the blade. Finally, the coolant passes through the internal gap to the second hole which has specific designed geometry for external film cooling. The effect of design parameters, such as, offset distance between two-stage holes, gap height, and inclination angle of the first hole, on upstream conjugate heat transfer rate and downstream film cooling effectiveness performance are investigated computationally. An Inconel 617 alloy with variable properties is selected for the solid material. The conjugate heat transfer and film cooling characteristics of MSCS are analyzed across blowing ratios of Br = 1 and 2 for density ratio, 2. This study presents upstream wall temperature distributions due to conjugate heat transfer for different gap design parameters. The maximum film cooling effectiveness with upstream conjugate heat transfer is less than adiabatic film cooling effectiveness by 24–34%. However, the full coverage of cooling effectiveness in spanwise direction can be obtained using internal cooling with conjugate heat transfer, whereas adiabatic film cooling effectiveness has narrow distribution.

We investigated heat and mass transfer on water based nanofluid due to the combined effects of homogeneous–heterogeneous reactions, an external magnetic field and internal heat generation. The flow is generated by the movement of a linearly stretched surface, and the nanofluid contains nanoparticles of copper and gold. Exact solutions of the transformed model equations were obtained in terms of hypergeometric functions. To gain more insights regarding subtle impact of fluid and material parameters on the heat and mass transfer characteristics, and the fluid properties, the equations were further solved numerically using the matlab bvp4c solver. The similarities and differences in the behavior, including the heat and mass transfer characteristics, of the copper–water and gold–water nanofluids with respect to changes in the flow parameters were investigated. Finally, we obtained the numerical values of the skin friction and heat transfer coefficients.

Abstract Ceramic matrix composite (CMC) parts create the opportunity for increased turbine entry temperatures within gas turbines. To achieve the highest temperatures possible, film cooling will play an important role in allowing turbine entry temperatures to exceed acceptable surface temperatures for CMC components, just as it does for the current generation of gas turbine components. Film cooling over a CMC surface introduces new challenges including roughness features downstream of the cooling holes and changes to the hole exit due to uneven surface topography. To better understand these impacts, this study presents flowfield and adiabatic effectiveness CFD for a 7-7-7 shaped film cooling hole at two CMC weave orientations. The CMC surface selected is a 5 Harness Satin weave pattern that is examined at two different orientations. To understand the ability of steady RANS to predict flow and convective heat transfer over a CMC surface, the weave surface is initially simulated without film and compared to previous experimental results. The simulation of the weave orientation of 0°, with fewer features projecting into the flow, matches fairly well to the experiment, and demonstrates a minimal impact on film cooling leading to only slightly lower adiabatic effectiveness compared to a smooth surface. However, the simulation of the 90° orientation with a large number of protruding features does not match the experimentally observed surface heat transfer. The additional protruding surface produces degraded film cooling performance at low blowing ratios but is less sensitive to blowing ratio, leading to improved relative performance at higher blowing ratios, particularly in regions far downstream of the hole.

The use of compound-angled shaped film cooling holes in gas turbines provides a method for cooling regions of extreme curvature on turbine blades or vanes. These configurations have received surprisingly little attention in the film cooling literature. In this study, a row of laid-back fanshaped holes based on an open-literature design, were oriented at a 45-degree compound angle to the approaching freestream flow. In this study, the influence of the approach flow boundary layer thickness and character were experimentally investigated. A trip wire and turbulence generator were used to vary the boundary layer thickness and freestream conditions from a thin laminar boundary layer flow to a fully turbulent boundary layer and freestream at the hole breakout location. Steady-state adiabatic effectiveness and heat transfer coefficient augmentation were measured using high-resolution IR thermography, which allowed the use of an elevated density ratio of DR = 1.20. The results show adiabatic effectiveness was generally lower than for axially-oriented holes of the same geometry, and that boundary layer thickness was an important parameter in predicting effectiveness of the holes. Heat transfer coefficient augmentation was highly dependent on the freestream turbulence levels as well as boundary layer thickness, and significant spatial variations were observed.

The effect of leading edge film cooling on heat transfer was experimentally investigated using the naphthalene sublimation technique. The experiments were performed on a symmetrical model of the leading edge suction side region of a high pressure turbine blade with one row of film cooling holes on each side. Two different lateral inclinations of the injection holes were studied: 0° and 45°. In order to build a data base for the validation and improvement of numerical computations, highly resolved distributions of the heat/mass transfer coefficients were measured. Reynolds numbers (based on hole diameter) were varied from 4000 to 8000 and blowing rate from 0.0 to 1.5. For better interpretation, the results were compared with injection-flow visualizations. Increasing the blowing rate causes more interaction between the jets and the mainstream, which creates higher jet turbulence at the exit of the holes resulting in a higher relative heat transfer. This increase remains constant over quite a long distance dependent on the Reynolds number. Increasing the Reynolds number keeps the jets closer to the wall resulting in higher relative heat transfer. The highly resolved heat/mass transfer distribution shows the influence of the complex flow field in the near hole region on the heat transfer values along the surface.

Abstract Augmented backside cooling refers to the enhancement of the backside convection of a combustor liner using extended heat transfer surfaces to fully utilise the cooling air by maximising the heat transfer to pumping ratio characteristic. Although film cooling has and still is widely used in the gas turbine industry, augmented backside cooling has been in development for decades now. The reason for this, is to reduce the amount of air used for liner cooling and to also reduce the emissions caused by using film cooling in the primary zones. In the case of micro gas turbines, emissions are of even greater importance, since the regulations for such engines will most likely become stricter in the following years due to a global effort to reduce emission. Furthermore, the liners investigated in this paper are for a 10 kWe micro turbine, destine for various potential markets, such as combine heat and power for houses, EV hybrids and even small UAVs. The majority of these markets require long service intervals, which in turn requires the combustor liners to be under the least amount of thermal stress possible. The desire to also increase combustor inlet temperatures with the use of recuperated exhaust gases, which in turn increase the overall system efficiency, limits the cooling effectiveness of the inlet air. Due to all these reasons, an advanced form of augmented backside cooling would be of substantial significance in such a system. Currently some very simple designs are used in the form of straight plain fins, transverse strips or other similar geometries, but the creation of high heat transfer efficiency surfaces in such small sizes becomes very difficult with traditional subtractive manufacturing methods. When using additive manufacturing though these types of surfaces are not an issue. This paper covers the comparison of experimental results with conjugate heat transfer CFD models and empirical heat balance models for two different AM liner cooling geometries and an AM blank liner. The two cooling fin geometries include a rotating plain fin and an offset strip fin. The liners were tested in an AM built reverse flow radial swirl stabilised combustion chamber at a variety of operating conditions. During the experiments the surfaces were compared using a thermal camera to record the outer liner temperature which was viewed through a quartz outer casing. The experimental results showed that the cooling surfaces were effective at reducing the liner temperatures with minimal pressure losses for multiple operating points. Those results were then compared against the conjugate heat transfer CFD models and the empirical calculations used to design the surfaces initially. From this comparison, it was noticed both the CFD and empirical calculations under predicted the wall temperatures. This is thought to be due to inaccuracies in the predicted flame temperatures and the assumed emissivity values used to calibrate the thermal imaging camera. Further uncertainties arise from the assumption of a constant air and hot gas temperature and mass flow along the cooling surfaces and the lack of data for the surface roughness of the parts.

Ever-increasing thermal loads on gas turbine components require improved cooling schemes to extend component life. Engine designers often rely on multiple thermal protection techniques, including internal cooling and external film cooling. A conjugate heat transfer model for the endwall of a seven-blade cascade was developed to examine the impact of both convective cooling and solid conduction through the endwall. Appropriate parameters were scaled to ensure engine-relevant temperatures were reported. External film cooling and internal jet impingement cooling were tested separately and together for their combined effects. Experiments with only film cooling showed high effectiveness around film-cooling holes due to convective cooling within the holes. Internal impingement cooling provided more uniform effectiveness than film cooling, and impingement effectiveness improved markedly with increasing blowing ratio. Combining internal impingement and external film cooling produced overall effectiveness values as high as 0.4. A simplified, one-dimensional heat transfer analysis was used to develop a prediction of the combined overall effectiveness using results from impingement only and film cooling only cases. The analysis resulted in relatively good predictions, which served to reinforce the consistency of the experimental data.

Gas turbine hot gas path components are protected through a combination of internal cooling and external film cooling. The coolant typically travels through internal passageways, which may involve impingement on the internal surface of a turbine component, before being ejected as film cooling. Internal cooling effects have been studied in facilities that allow measurement of heat transfer coefficients within models of the internal cooling paths, with large heat transfer coefficients generally desirable. External film cooling is typically evaluated through measurements of the adiabatic effectiveness and its effect on the external heat transfer coefficient. Efforts aimed at improving cooling are often focused on either only the internal cooling or the film cooling; however, the common coolant flow means the internal and external cooling schemes are linked and the coolant holes themselves provide another convective path for heat transfer to the coolant. Recently, measurements of overall cooling effectiveness using matched Biot number turbine component models allow evaluation of the nondimensional wall temperature achieved for the fully cooled component. However, the relative contributions of internal cooling, external cooling, and convection within the film cooling holes is not well understood. Large scale, matched Biot number experiments, complemented by CFD simulations, were performed on a fully film cooled cylindrical leading edge model to evaluate the effects of various alterations in the cooling design on the overall effectiveness. The relative influence of film cooling and cooling within the holes was evaluated by selectively disabling individual holes and quantifying how the overall effectiveness changed. Several internal impingement cooling schemes in addition to a baseline case without impingement cooling were also tested. In general, impingement cooling is shown to have a negligible influence on the overall effectiveness in the showerhead region. This indicates that the cost and pressure drop penalties for implementing impingement cooling may not be compensated by an increase in thermal performance. Instead, the internal cooling provided by convection within the holes themselves was shown, along with external film cooling, to be a dominant contribution to the overall cooling effectiveness. Indeed, the numerous holes within the showerhead region impede the ability of internal surface cooling schemes to influence the outside surface temperature. The results of this research may allow improved focus of future efforts on the forms of cooling with the greatest potential to improve cooling performance.

Computational simulations using RANS and the k-ω SST turbulence model were performed to complement experimental measurements of overall cooling effectiveness and adiabatic film effectiveness for a film cooled turbine vane airfoil. Particular attention was placed on the showerhead. The design made use of five rows of showerhead holes and a single gill row on both pressure and suction sides. The simulated geometry also included the internal impingement cooling configuration. Internal and external boundary conditions were matched to experiments using the same vane model. To correctly simulate conjugate heat transfer effects, the experimental vane model was constructed to match the Biot number for engine conditions. Computational predictions of the overall and adiabatic effectiveness were compared to experimental measurements from both the conducting vane and a model constructed from low conductivity foam. The results show that the k-ω SST RANS model over-predicts both adiabatic and overall effectiveness due in part to limited jet diffusion. The simulations were also used to investigate heat transfer augmentation, which is difficult to measure experimentally in the showerhead region. The results showed substantial augmentation of 1.5 or more over large portions of the leading edge, with many areas exceeding 2.0. However, the simulations also showed a reduction in heat transfer (i.e., hf/h0 < 1) for locations beneath the coolant jets. This result was likely due to Taw being an inappropriate driving temperature for separated jets.

Consideration is given to the constant property laminar boundary layer equations with free convection and mass transfer. It is shown that similar solutions are possible for blowing rate distributions varying as the distance from the leading edge raised to the power (n − 1)/4 where n is the exponent in a power law surface temperature distribution. Solutions to the equations in the form of skin friction and heat-transfer parameters, and velocity and temperature profiles are presented for the constant wall temperature case for a fluid with Pr = 0.73. The cases considered range from strong suction to strong blowing. Mass transfer has a pronounced effect on the heat transfer but only a slight effect on the skin friction. In light of the solutions presented, these effects are shown to be physically rational.
