Design of an Engagement Guiding Mechanism for Roller Chain Drives

On a roller chain drive, if the incoming engaging roller moves tangent to the pitch circle at the moment of engagement, no roller-sprocket impact should occur. Based on such a notion, an engagement guiding mechanism is proposed to make this possible. The algorithm of kinematic design of the mechanism is presented. Comparisons between the new model and a conventional model show significant improvements made in the kinematic properties of the engaging roller.

A detailed numerical simulation analysis on the dynamic response of intermittent roller chain drive has been carried out in this study. Instead of using analytical method, three dimension solid modeling software and multi-rigid body dynamic analysis software are utilized for modeling and simulating the dynamic behavior of chain drive. The longitudinal vibration response of the chain links is concentrated on, which aims to reveal the dynamic characteristics of the intermittent chain drive under varying motion laws such as the modified sinusoid (MS), the modified constant velocity (MCV) and the unsymmetrical modified trapezoid (UMT). The simulation results can enable designers to require information on the analysis and design of mechanisms with the intermittent roller chain drives.

A kinematic analysis has been developed for the motion of roller chain drives, which is exact for relatively slow-speed chain drives with negligible wear. The results shed new light on chordal or polygonal action, and the associated impact velocity and motion fluctuation of the chain drive. The results have also revealed the existence of a remarkable degree of sensitivity of chain performance with respect to center distance including discontinuities in the motion derivatives. This in turn provides a new opportunity for the optimization of chain drives by optimizing center distance both in the design stage, as well as during installation and maintenance.

Abstract In this article, a brief history of chain drives is presented, and the design and construction of a machine to investigate chain drive force phenomena is discussed. The new test machine allows the measurement of the impact force between a roller and the sprocket during “seating” and it can also be used to measure the forces that exist in the link sides plates during normal operation (including start-up and shut down conditions). Data can be obtained for a wide range of chain loads and speeds. Two companion papers (“Experimental Investigation of the Impact Force that Occurs When a Roller Seats on the Sprocket During Normal Operation of a Roller Chain Drive” and “Experimental Investigation of the Forces in a Link Side Plate During Normal Operation of a Roller Chain Drive”, both presented at this conference) describe experiments that have been completed with this test machine.

Particularly at the higher sprocket speeds, one of the main sources of noise and high-frequency vibration in a roller chain drive is the impact which occurs each time the driving sprocket collects a roller from the chain span. A method of guiding the chain so as to virtually eliminate these impacts is described. Details are given of experimental tests in which a simply-constructed guide device greatly reduced the amplitude of the high-frequency vibration of a drive, and produced a very significant lowering of the noise level.

Various rider models have been proposed that provide control inputs for the simulation of motorcycle dynamics. However, those models are mostly used to simulate production motorcycles, so they assume that all motions are in the linear region such as those in a constant radius turn. As such, their performance is insufficient for simulating racing motorcycles that experience quick acceleration and braking. Therefore, this study proposes a new rider model for racing simulation that incorporates Nonlinear Model Predictive Control. In developing this model, it was built on the premise that it can cope with running conditions that lose contact with the front wheels or rear wheels so-called "endo" and "wheelie", which often occur during running with large acceleration or deceleration assuming a race. For the control inputs to the vehicle, we incorporated the lateral shift of the rider's center of gravity in addition to the normally used inputs such as the steering angle, throttle position, and braking force. We compared the performance of the new model with that of the conventional model under constant radius cornering and straight braking, as well as complex braking and acceleration in a single (hairpin) corner that represented a racing run. The results showed that the new rider model outperformed the conventional model, especially in the wider range of running speed usable for a simulation. In addition, we compared the simulation results for complex braking and acceleration in a single hairpin corner produced by the new model with data from an actual race and verified that the new model was able to accurately simulate the run of actual MotoGP riders.

Literature has shown that various studies have dealt with different professional features of teaching and they have focused on one or few professional characteristics of educators. In spite of the immense amount of literature on educator characteristics, a comprehensive study that would encompass the vital professional characteristics of an educator in total is lacking. This has instigated the researcher to take up the study to identify the professional characteristics of an educator. An attempt was made in identifying the educators' characteristics using student outcome as a boundary criterion to select the characteristics from among several that are available in the literature. Therefore, a new model of professional characteristics of educators was proposed. This paper discusses in detail, the characteristics of a profession in general and the wide range of educator’s characteristics as studied in previous researches. The paper presents a wide scope for the models developed to be studied in depth to appreciate and investigate more about the professional characteristics identified through this review of literature. The models may also be tested empirically for further accumulation of knowledge in the field.

Resumo: Neste trabalho buscamos realizar uma breve genealogia – sempre inacabada – acerca das formas como a política – especificamente sua dimensão militante e engajada – se manifesta no cinema, a partir de um recorte histórico que privilegia a produção militante e coletiva dos anos 1960 e 1970. Nesse período vários coletivos e iniciativas individuais surgiram em torno de um cinema engajado. Ao recuperar algumas dessas iniciativas, é possível retomar também as questões que elas abordavam, tais como o ato de delegar a câmera ao trabalhador, as relações entre as imagens filmadas num momento de urgência – o ponto de vista – e sua articulação na montagem, o modo de distribuição dos filmes militantes. Assim, percebemos o quanto esse momento de contestação política será também o de uma invenção formal no âmbito do cinema.Palavras-chave: cinema militante; cinema coletivo; contra-informação.Abstract: In this paper we seek to develop a genealogy – always unfinished – about the ways in which politics – specifically in its militant and engaged dimensions – manifests itself in cinema, throughout a historical frame that privileges the militant and collective production from the sixties and the seventies. During this period, several collectives and individual initiatives emerged regarding an engaged cinema. By recovering some of these initiatives it is possible to also recapture the issues that they addressed, such as the act of delegating the camera to the workers, the relations between the images made in moments of urgency – the point of view – and its assemblage in montage, the modes of distribution of the militant films. Therefore, we realize that the moment of political challenge will also be of formal invention in the scope of cinema.Keywords: militant cinema; collective cinema; counter-information.
