Discrete Green’s Function Measurements in a Serpentine Cooling Passage

The inverse discrete Green’s function (IDGF) is a heat transfer coefficient that is valid for arbitrarily complex thermal boundary conditions. It was measured using a rapid experimentation technique in a generic serpentine turbine-blade cooling passage with rib turbulators for Reynolds numbers from 15,000 to 55,000. The model was designed to adhere closely to industry design practice. There were four square cross-section passages with ribs on two opposing walls at 45deg to the main flow. The rib pitch-to-height ratio was 8.5:1 and the blockage ratio was 0.1. The IDGF was measured with an element length of one rib pitch and was used to determine Nusselt numbers that were then compared to the literature. An increase in Nusselt number over thermally fully developed pipe flow of 2.5–3.0 is common in the literature and was consistent with the results in this work. The results showed that the heat transfer coefficient in such complex passages is weakly affected by the thermal boundary condition, which simplifies measurement of this quantity.

Thermal stress failure caused by alternating operational loads is the one of important damage mechanisms in the nuclear power plants. To evaluate the thermal stress responses, the Green’s function approach has been generally used. In this paper, a method to consider varying heat transfer coefficients when using the Green’s function method is proposed by using artificial parameter method and superposition principle. Time dependent heat transfer coefficient has been treated by using a modified fluid temperature and a constant heat transfer coefficient. Three-dimensional temperature and stress analyses reflecting entire geometry and heat transfer properties are required to obtain accurate results. An efficient and accurate method is confirmed by comparing its result with corresponding 3D finite element analysis results for a reactor pressure vessel (RPV). From the results, it is found that the temperature dependent material properties and varying heat transfer coefficients can significantly affect the peak stresses and the proposed method can reduce computational efforts with satisfactory accuracy.

The heat transfer coefficient over the surface of a pedestal with fillet radii has been measured using thermochromic liquid crystals and the transient heat transfer method. The tests were performed at engine representative Reynolds numbers for a geometry typical of those used in turbine blade cooling systems. The heat conduction process that occurs in the engine was subsequently modelled numerically with a finite element discretization of the solid pedestal. The measured heat transfer coefficients were used to derive the exact boundary conditions applicable to the engine. The temperature field within the pedestal, calculated using the correct heat transfer coefficient distribution is compared to that calculated using an area averaged heat transfer coefficient. Metal temperature differences of 90K are predicted across the blade wall.

An experimental study is performed to investigate the heat transfer characteristics and frictional losses in a rib roughened channel combined with detached pin-fins. The overall channel geometry (W = 76.2 mm, E = 25.4 mm) simulates an internal cooling passage of wide aspect ratio (3:1) in a gas turbine airfoil. With a given pin diameter, D = 6.35 mm = [1/4]E, three different pin-fin height-to-diameter ratios, H/D = 4, 3, and 2, were examined. Each of these three cases corresponds to a specific pin array geometry of detachment spacing (C) between the pin-tip and one of the endwalls, i.e., C/D = 0, 1, 2, respectively. The rib height-to-channel height ratio is 0.0625. Two newly proposed cross ribs, namely the broken rib and full rib are evaluated in this effort. The broken ribs are positioned in between two consecutive rows of pin-fins, while the full ribs are fully extended adjacent to the pin-fins. The Reynolds number, based on the hydraulic diameter of the unobstructed cross section and the mean bulk velocity, ranges from 10,000 to 25,000. The experiment employs a hybrid technique based on transient liquid crystal imaging to obtain distributions of the local heat transfer coefficient over all of the participating surfaces, including the endwalls and all pin elements. The presence of ribs enhances local heat transfer coefficient on the endwall substantially by approximately 20% to 50% as compared to the neighboring endwall. In addition, affected by the rib geometry, which is a relatively low profile as compared to the overall height of the channel, the pressure loss seems to be insensitive to the presence of the ribs. However, from the overall heat transfer enhancement standpoint, the baseline cases (without ribs) outperform cases with broken ribs or full ribs.

In this paper a numerical simulation is performed to predict the swirl cooling on internal leading edge cooling passage model. The relative performances of four kinds of turbulence models including the standard κ-ε model, the RNG κ-ε model, the standard κ-ω model and the SST κ-ω model in the simulation of the swirl flow by tangential inlet jets in a circular pipe are compared with available experimental data. The results show that SST κ-ω model is the best one based on simulation accuracy. Then the SST κ-ω model is adopted for the present simulation. A circular pipe with a single rectangular tangential inlet jet or with two rectangular tangential inlet jets is adopted to investigate the swirl cooling and its effectiveness. The influence of the Reynolds number and the inlet to wall temperature ratio are investigated. The results indicate that the heat transfer coefficient on the swirl chamber increases with the increase of Reynolds number, and increases with the decrease of the inlet to wall temperature ratio. The swirl pipe with two tangential inlets could get a heat transfer enhancement of about three times to that of the nonswirling pipe, while swirl pipe with one tangential inlet could get a heat transfer coefficient 38% higher than that of the nonswirling pipe.

Trailing edge cooling cavities in modern gas turbine blades often have trapezoidal cross-sectional areas of relatively low aspect ratio. To enhance cooling effectiveness in these passages, they are roughened with tapered turbulators. Furthermore, to provide additional cooling for the trailing edge, the cooling air may be ejected through trailing edge slots as it moves radially along the cooling passage. The tapered turbulators, in conjunction with the presence of these slots along the smaller base of the trapezoidal cavity, create spanwise as well as longitudinal variations in heat transfer coefficient on the turbulated walls. Moreover, the continuous variation of cooling air velocity along these passages causes a continuous change in static pressure which also requires investigation. Liquid crystals are used in this experimental investigation to study the effects of tapered turbulators on heat transfer coefficients in trailing edge passages with and without bleed holes. The tapered turbulators are configured on two opposite walls of the trapezoidal test section in a staggered arrangement with an angle of attack to the mainstream flow, α, of 90°. Nine different test geometries consisting of two passage aspect ratios, AR, were tested over a range of turbulator aspect ratios, ARt, blockage ratios, emax/Dh, pitch-to-height ratios, S/emax, and Reynolds numbers. Channel pressure losses were also measured and both heat transfer and friction factor results for several geometries are compared. It is concluded that a) there exists a large spanwise variation in heat transfer coefficient in test sections with no bleed holes, b) adding bleed holes to the smaller base of the trapezoidal cavity gives a spanwise velocity component to the mainstream flow and reduces this variation, and c) Nusselt numbers measured in the test sections with bleed holes correlate well with local Reynolds number.

In this paper detailed experimental measurements and computational predictions of heat transfer coefficient distributions in a large scale perspex model of a novel integrally cast blade cooling geometry are reported. In a gas turbine blade, the cooling passage investigated is integrally cast into the blade wall, providing good thermal contact with the outer surface of the turbine blade. Flow enters the racetrack passage through the root of the blade and exits to a central plenum through a series of nineteen transfer holes equally spaced in a staggered arrangement across the span of the blade. The Reynolds number changes continuously along the passage length because of the continuous ejection of fluid through a series of 19 transfer holes to the plenum. The smooth passage surface opposite is in closest proximity to the external surface, and this investigation has characterised the heat transfer coefficient on this surface at a range of engine representative inlet Reynolds numbers using a hybrid transient liquid crystal technique. The ability of three different rib configurations to enhance the heat transfer on this surface was also determined. Because the passage at engine scale is necessarily small, the rib height in all cases was 32.5% of the passage height. As the entire passage wetted surface is able to contribute to the blade cooling, and knowledge of the heat transfer coefficient distribution on the holed surfaces is crucial to prediction of blade life, a commercial CFD package, Fluent, was used to predict the heat transfer coefficient distributions on the holed surface, where there was no optical access during these tests. This also allowed investigation of additional rib configurations, and comparison of the pressure penalty associated with each design. The study showed that the turbulator configuration used allows the position and maximum level of heat transfer coefficient enhancement to be chosen by the engine designer. For the configurations tested heat transfer coefficient enhancement of up to 32% and 51% could be achieved on the holed surface and the ribbed surface respectively. For minimum additional pressure drop 45° ribs should be used.

A transient heat transfer method which uses liquid crystals has been applied to a scale model of a turbine rotor blade passage. Detailed contours of local heat transfer coefficient are presented for the passage in which the heat transfer to one wall was enhanced firstly by ribs and then with ribs combined with holes. The hole geometry and experimental dimensionless flow rates were representative of those occurring at the entrance to engine film cooling holes. The results for the ribbed passage are compared to established correlations for developed flow. Qualitative surface shear stress distributions were determined with liquid crystals. The complex distributions of heat transfer coefficient are discussed in the light of the interpreted flow field.

Detailed measurements of the heat transfer coefficient (htc) distributions on the internal surfaces of a novel gas turbine blade cooling configuration were carried out using a transient liquid crystal technique. The cooling geometry, in which a series of racetrack passages are connected to a central plenum, provides high heat transfer coefficients in regions of the blade in good thermal contact with the outer blade surface. The Reynolds number changes along its length because of the ejection of fluid through a series of 19 transfer holes in a staggered arrangement, which are used to connect ceramic cores during the casting process. Heat transfer coefficient distributions on these holes surface are particularly important in the prediction of blade life, as are heat transfer coefficients within the hole. The results at passage inlet Reynolds numbers of 21,667, 45,596, and 69,959 are presented along with in-hole htc distributions at Rehole=5930, 12,479, 19,147; and suction ratios of 0.98, 1.31, 2.08, and 18.67, respectively. All values are engine representative. Characteristic regions of high heat transfer downstream of the transfer holes were observed with enhancement of up to 92% over the Dittus–Boelter level. Within the transfer holes, the average htc level was strongly affected by the cross-flow at the hole entrance. htc levels were low in these short (l/d=1.5) holes fed from regions of developed boundary layer.
