Pulsed film cooling was studied experimentally to determine its effect on film-cooling effectiveness and heat transfer. The film-cooling jets were pulsed using solenoid valves in the supply air line. Cases with a single row of cylindrical film-cooling holes inclined at 35 deg to the surface of a flat plate were considered at blowing ratios of 0.25, 0.5, 1.0, and 1.5 for a variety of pulsing frequencies and duty cycles. Temperature measurements were made using an infrared camera and thermocouples. The plate was equipped with constant flux surface heaters, and data were acquired for each flow condition with the plate both heated and unheated. The local film-cooling effectiveness, Stanton numbers, and heat flux ratios were calculated and compared to baseline cases with continuous blowing and no blowing. Stanton number signatures on the surface provided evidence of flow structures, including horseshoe vortices wrapping around the film-cooling jets and vortices within the jets. Pulsing tends to increase Stanton numbers, and the effect tends to increase with pulsing frequency and duty cycle. Some exceptions were observed, however, at the highest frequencies tested. Overall heat flux ratios also show that pulsing tends to have a detrimental effect with some exceptions at the highest frequencies. The best overall film cooling was achieved with continuous jets and a blowing ratio of 0.5. The present results may prove useful for understanding film-cooling behavior in engines, where mainflow unsteadiness causes film-cooling jet pulsation.

The highest overall effectiveness was achieved with continuous jets and a blowing ratio of 0.5. Abstract A measurement technique for recording convective heat transfer coefficient and adiabatic film cooling effectiveness in demanding environments with highly curved surfaces and limited optical access, such as turbomachinery, is presented. Thermography and tailor-made flexible heating foils are used in conjunction with a novel multistep calibration and data reduction method. This method compensates for sensor drift, angle dependence of surface emissivity and window transmissivity, heat flux inhomogeneity, and conductive losses. The 2D infrared images are mapped onto the 3D curved surfaces and overlapped, creating surface maps of heat transfer coefficient and film cooling effectiveness covering areas significantly larger than the window size. The measurement technique’s capability is demonstrated in a sector-cascade test rig of a turbine center frame (TCF), an inherent component of modern two-spool turbofan engines. The horseshoe vortices were found to play a major role for the thermal integrity of turbine center frames, as they lead to a local increase in heat transfer, and at the same instance, to a reduction of film cooling effectiveness. It was also found that the horseshoe vortices lift off from the curved surface at 50% hub length, resulting in a pair of counter-rotating vortices. The measurement technique was validated by comparing the data against flat plate correlations and also by the linear relation between temperature difference and heat flux. This study is complemented with an extensive error and uncertainty analysis. Article highlights This paper presents an accurate measurement technique for heat transfer and film cooling on 3D curved surfaces with limited optical access using flexible tailor-made heating foils, infrared thermography and a high-fidelity multistep calibration process. In gas turbine engines, film cooling holes are commonly fed with an internal crossflow, the magnitude of which has been shown to have a notable effect on film cooling effectiveness. In Part I of this study, as well as in a few previous studies, the magnitude of internal crossflow velocity was shown to have a substantial effect on film cooling effectiveness of axial shaped holes. There is, however, almost no data available in the literature that shows how internal crossflow affects compound angle shaped film cooling holes. In Part II, film cooling effectiveness, heat transfer coefficient augmentation, and discharge coefficients were measured for a single row of compound angle shaped film cooling holes fed by internal crossflow flowing both in-line and counter to the span-wise direction of coolant injection. The crossflow-to-mainstream velocity ratio was varied from 0.2–0.6 and the injection velocity ratio was varied from 0.2–1.7. It was found that increasing the magnitude of the crossflow velocity generally caused degradation of the film cooling effectiveness, especially for in-line crossflow. An analysis of jet characteristic parameters demonstrated the importance of crossflow effects relative to the effect of varying the film cooling injection rate. Heat transfer coefficient augmentation was found to be primarily dependent on injection rate, although for in-line crossflow, increasing crossflow velocity significantly increased augmentation for certain conditions.

The effect of an unheated starting length upstream of a row of film cooling holes was studied experimentally to determine its effect on heat transfer coefficients downstream of the holes. Cases with a single row of cylindrical film cooling holes inclined at 35deg to the surface of a flat plate were considered at blowing ratios of 0.25, 0.5, 1.0, and 1.5. For each case, experiments were conducted to determine the film-cooling effectiveness and the Stanton number distributions in cases with the surface upstream of the holes heated and unheated. Measurements were made using an infrared camera, thermocouples, and hot and cold-wire anemometry. Ratios were computed of the Stanton number with film cooling (Stf) to corresponding Stanton numbers in cases without film cooling (Sto), but the same surface heating conditions. Contours of these ratios were qualitatively the same regardless of the upstream heating conditions, but the ratios were larger for the cases with a heating starting length. Differences were most pronounced just downstream of the holes and for the lower blowing rate cases. Even 12 diameters downstream of the holes, the Stanton number ratios were 10–15% higher with a heated starting length. At higher blowing rates the differences between the heated and unheated starting length cases were not significant. The differences in Stanton number distributions are related to jet flow structures, which vary with blowing rate.

Internal coolant passages of gas turbine vanes and blades have various orientations relative to the external hot gas flow. As a consequence, the inflow of film cooling holes varies as well. To further identify the influencing parameters of film cooling under varying inflow conditions, the present paper provides detailed experimental data. The generic study is performed in a novel test rig, which enables compliance with all relevant similarity parameters including density ratio. Film cooling effectiveness as well as heat transfer of a 10–10–10 deg laidback fan-shaped cooling hole is discussed. Data are processed and presented over 50 hole diameters downstream of the cooling hole exit. First, the parallel coolant flow setup is discussed. Subsequently, it is compared to a perpendicular coolant flow setup at a moderate coolant channel Reynolds number. For the perpendicular coolant flow, asymmetric flow separation in the diffuser occurs and leads to a reduction of film cooling effectiveness. For a higher coolant channel Reynolds number and perpendicular coolant flow, asymmetry increases and cooling effectiveness is further decreased. An increase in blowing ratio does not lead to a significant increase in cooling effectiveness. For all cases investigated, heat transfer augmentation due to film cooling is observed. Heat transfer is highest in the near-hole region and decreases further downstream. Results prove that coolant flow orientation has a severe impact on both parameters.

Data from conical-shaped film cooling holes is extremely sparse in open literature, especially the cooling uniformity characteristic, an important criterion for evaluating any film cooling design. The authors will compare the performance of conical-shaped holes to cylindrical-shaped holes. Cylindrical-shaped holes are often considered a baseline in terms of film cooling effectiveness and cooling uniformity coefficient. The authors will study two coupons with conical-shaped holes, which have 3° and 6° diffusion angles, named CON3 and CON6 respectively. A conjugate heat transfer computational fluid dynamics model and an experimental wind tunnel will be used to study these coupons. The three configurations: cylindrical baseline, CON3, and CON6, have a single row of holes with an inlet metering diameter of 3mm, length-to-nominal diameter of 4.3, and an injection angle of 30°. In this study, the authors will also take into account the heat transfer into the coolant flow from the coolant channel. In other words, coolant temperature at the exit of the coolant hole will be different than that measured at the inlet, and the conjugate heat transfer model will be used to correct for this difference. For the numerical model, the realizable k-ε turbulent model will be applied with a second order of discretization and enhanced wall treatment to provide the highest accuracy available. Grid independent studies for both cylindrical-shaped film cooling holes and conical-shaped holes will be performed and the results will be compared to data in open literature as well as in-house experimental data. Results show that conical-shaped holes considerably outperform cylindrical-shaped holes in film cooling effectiveness at all blowing ratios. In terms of cooling uniformity, conical-shaped holes perform better than cylindrical-shaped holes for low and mid-range blowing ratios, but not at higher levels.

Experiments were conducted to determine the impact of synfuel deposits on film cooling effectiveness and heat transfer. Scaled up models were made of synfuel deposits formed on film-cooled turbine blade coupons exposed to accelerated deposition. Three distinct deposition patterns were modeled: a large deposition pattern (max deposit peak ≅ 2 hole diameters) located exclusively upstream of the holes, a large deposition pattern (max deposit peak ≅ 1.25 hole diameters) extending downstream between the cooling holes, and a small deposition pattern (max deposit peak ≅ 0.75 hole diameter) also extending downstream between the cooling holes. The models featured cylindrical holes inclined at 30 degrees to the surface and aligned with the primary flow direction. The spacing of the holes were 3, 3.35, and 4.5 hole diameters respectively. Flat models with the same film cooling hole geometry and spacing were used for comparison. The models were tested using blowing ratios of 0.5–2 with a turbulent approach boundary layer and 0.5% freestream turbulence. The density ratio was approximately 1.1 and the primary flow Reynolds number at the film cooling row location was 300,000. An infrared camera was used to obtain the film cooling effectiveness from steady state tests and surface convective heat transfer coefficients using transient tests. The model with upstream deposition caused the primary flow to lift off the surface over the roughness peaks and allowed the coolant to stay attached to the model. Increasing the blowing ratio from 0.5 to 2 only expanded the region that the coolant could reach and improved the cooling effectiveness. Though the heat transfer coefficient also increased at high blowing ratios, the net heat flux ratio was still less than unity, indicating film cooling benefit. For the two models with deposition between the cooling holes, the free stream air was forced into the valleys in line with the coolant holes and degraded area-averaged coolant performance at lower blowing ratios. It is concluded that the film cooling effectiveness is highest when deposition is limited to upstream of the cooling holes. When accounting for the insulating effect of the deposits between the film holes, even the panels with deposits downstream of the film holes can yield a net decrease in heat flux for some cases.

An experimental study was performed to measure surface Nusselt number and film cooling effectiveness on a film cooled first stage nozzle guide vane (NGV) at high freestream turbulence, using a transient thin film gauge (TFG) technique. The information presented attempts to further characterize the performance of shaped hole film cooling by taking measurements on a row of shaped holes downstream of leading edge showerhead injection on both the pressure and suction surfaces (hereafter PS and SS) of a first stage NGV. Tests were performed at engine representative Mach and Reynolds numbers and high inlet turbulence intensity and large length scale at the Virginia Tech 2D Linear Transonic Cascade facility. Three exit Mach/Reynolds number conditions were tested: 1.0/1,400,000, 0.85/1,150,000, and 0.60/850,000 where Reynolds number is based on exit conditions and vane chord. At Mach/Reynolds numbers of 1.0/1,450,000 and 0.85/1,150,000, three blowing ratio conditions were tested: BR = 1.0, 1.5, and 2.0. At a Mach/Reynolds number of 0.60/850,000, two blowing ratio conditions were tested: BR = 1.5 and 2.0. All tests were performed at inlet turbulence intensity of 12% and length scale normalized by the cascade pitch of 0.28. Film cooling effectiveness and heat transfer results compared well with previously published data, showing a marked effectiveness improvement (up to 2.5×) over the showerhead-only NGV and also agreement with published showerhead-shaped hole data. Net heat flux reduction (NHFR) was shown to increase substantially (average 2.6 × ) with the addition of shaped holes with an increase (average 1.6×) in required coolant mass flow. Based on the heat flux data, the boundary layer transition location was shown to be within a consistent region on the suction side regardless of blowing ratio and exit Mach number.
