This article discusses about a requirement that aims to protect occupants from dangerous smoke concentrations and keep escape routes clear in a building that houses a restaurant in Zurich, Switzerland. It has to be ventilated with windows in the roof that open automatically in case of fire. For a substantial building, the difference between automated venting for one percent and two percent of a roof surface can represent tens of thousands of dollars. The AFC Air Flow Consulting hired by the restaurant uses computational fluid dynamics and visualization software to improve construction and product design before too much time or money is committed. The company has provided solutions for flow problems ranging from cold downdraft along facades to droplet dispersion. A field of growing interest for AFC is industrial engineering. The company optimizes the airflow to accommodate various parameters in technical parts, such as the airflow in a medical inhaler for homogeneous distribution of droplets, or the air intake device of a car ventilation system for water separation.

Air contamination in the operating room (OR) is an important contributor for surgical site infections. Air quality should be assessed during microbiological commissioning of new ORs and as required thereafter. Despite many modern methods of sampling air, developing countries mostly depended on conventional methods. This was studied in two ORs of the National Hospital of Sri Lanka (NHSL) with different ventilation system; a conventional ventilation (CV) and a laminar air flow (LAF). Both ORs were sampled simultaneously by two different methods, the settle plate and sampler when empty and during use for a defined time period. Laboratory work was done in the Medical Research Institute. The two methods of sampling showed moderate but highly significant correlation. The OR with CV was significantly more contaminated than LAF when empty as well as during use by both methods. Overall, the difference in contamination was more significant when sampled by the sampler. Differences in contamination in empty and in-use ORs were significant in both ORs, but significance is less in LAF rooms. The consistent and significant correlation between settle plate and sampler showed that the settle plate is an acceptable method. The LAF theatre showed less contamination while empty and during use as expected. Air contamination differences were more significant when sampled with sampler indicating that it is a more sensitive method. Both CV and LAF ORs of the NHSL did not meet the contamination standards for empty theatres but met the standards for in-use indicating that the theatre etiquette was acceptable.

Besides being routinely used for a broad spectrum of complex flow problems, there are, in the opinion expressed in this part of the book, a few precious instances in which LB has made a palpable difference.

Abstract Wells turbine is an important component in the oscillating water column (OWC) system. Thus, many researchers tend to improve the performance via experiment or computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation, which is cheaper. As the CFD method becomes more popular, the lack of evidence to support the parameters used during the CFD simulation becomes a big issue. This paper aims to review the CFD models applied to the Wells turbine for the OWC system. Journal papers from the past ten years were summarized in brief critique. As a summary, the FLUENT and CFX software are mostly used to simulate the Wells turbine flow problems while SST k-ω turbulence model is the widely used model. A grid independence test is essential when doing CFD simulation. In conclusion, this review paper can show the research gap for CFD simulation and can reduce the time in selecting suitable parameters when involving simulation in the Wells turbine.

A simplified potential theory-based infinite-bladed propeller model is coupled with the Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) code CFDSHIP-IOWA to give a model that interactively determines propeller-hull-rudder interaction without requiring detailed modeling of the propeller geometry. Computations are performed for an open-water propeller, for the Series 60 ship sailing straight ahead and for the appended tanker Esso Osaka in different maneuvering conditions. The results are compared with experimental data, and the tanker data are further used to study the interaction among the propeller, hull, and rudder. A comparison between calculated and measured data for the Series 60 ship shows fair agreement, where the computation captures the trends in the flow, that is, the flow structure and the magnitude of the field quantities together with the integral quantities. For the tanker, the flow study reveals a rather complex flow field in the stern region, where the velocity distribution and propeller loading reflect the flow field changes caused by the different maneuvering conditions. The integral quantities, that is, the propeller, hull, and rudder forces, are in fair agreement with experiments. No formal verification and validation are performed, so the present results are related to previous work with verification and validation of the same model, but without the propeller. For the validated cases, the levels of validation are the same as without the propeller, because the validation uncertainties, that is, the combined experimental and simulation uncertainties, are assumed to be the same for both cases. Based on this, validation is obtained for approximately the same cases as for the without-propeller conditions, but the comparison errors, that is, the difference between experiment and calculation, are different. For instance, the difference between computation and experiment for the ship resistance is generally larger with the propeller than without, whereas the opposite is the case for the rudder drag. Summarizing the results, the method shows encouraging results, and taking the effort related to modeling the propeller into account, the method appears to be useful in connection with studies of rudder-propeller-hull related flow problems, where the real propeller geometry cannot be modeled.

It has long been acknowledged that the development of scientific applications is in need of better software engineering practices. Here we contrast the difference between conventional software development of CFD codes with a method based on coordinate free mathematics. The former approach leads to programs where different aspects, such as the discretisation technique and the coordinate systems, can get entangled with the solver algorithm. The latter approach yields programs that segregate these concerns into fully independent software modules. Such considerations are important for the construction of numerical codes for practical problems. The two approaches are illustrated on the coating problem: the simulation of coating a wire with a polymer.

The indoor airflow with a natural ventilation system was numerically calculated using the laminar and turbulent approach. In the chemical laboratory of the Technical University of Ambato, the computational code OpenFoam demonstrated an ability to numerically predict flow patterns. The design contemplated the natural ventilation system considering the laboratories’ working conditions not only in summer, but also in a winter week. These two operating conditions are calculated on a fully open and closed environment. For a room with a capacity of 20 people, the climate data average values were recorded at 14.0 ° C, 81.7%, 1.7 m /s for temperature, relative humidity, and wind speed, respectively. Furthermore, the demonstration has shown that the homogeneous occupancy air speed average is was 0.7 m / s with a facade air intake of 1.0 m / s 0.6 m / s in the room valid for the exchange of air and evacuation of pollutants. The maximum pressures were found in the lower part of the laboratory. This prevents the modification of the thermo-hygrometric conditions.
