The phenomenon of three-dimensional (3D) steady-state motion of a string traveling along an invariant curve in a flowing medium is studied. Existence conditions are found using a perturbation scheme where a known two-dimensional (2D) solution is used as an initial approximation.

This work presents a post-processing tool for the verification of steady-state fluid flow and heat transfer finite volume computations. It is based both on the generalized Richardson extrapolation and the Grid Convergence Index GCI. The observed order of accuracy and a error band where the grid independent solution is expected to be contained are estimated. The results corresponding to the following two and three-dimensional steady-state simulations are post-processed: a flow inside a cavity with moving top wall, an axisymmetric turbulent flow through a compressor valve, a premixed methane/air laminar flat flame on a perforated burner, and the heat transfer from an isothermal cylinder enclosed by a square duct. Discussion is carried out about the certainty of the estimators obtained with the post-processing procedure. They have been shown to be useful parameters in order to assess credibility and quality to the reported numerical solutions.

Abstract This paper presents equivalent circuits representing the partial differential equations of the theory of elasticity for bodies of arbitrary shapes. Transient, steady-state, or sinusoidally oscillating elastic-field phenomena may now be studied, within any desired degree of accuracy, either by a “network analyzer,” or by numerical- and analytical-circuit methods. Such problems are the propagation of elastic waves, determination of the natural frequencies of vibration of elastic bodies, or of stresses and strains in steady-stressed states. The elastic body may be non-homogeneous, may have arbitrary shape and arbitrary boundary conditions, it may rotate at a uniform angular velocity and may, for representation, be divided into blocks of uneven length in different directions. The circuits are developed to handle both two- and three-dimensional phenomena. They are expressed in all types of orthogonal curvilinear reference frames in order to simplify the boundary relations and to allow the solution of three-dimensional problems with axial and other symmetry by the use of only a two-dimensional network. Detailed circuits are given for the important cases of axial symmetry, cylindrical co-ordinates (two-dimensional) and rectangular co-ordinates (two- and three-dimensional). Nonlinear stress-strain relations in the plastic range may be handled by a step-by-step variation of the circuit constants. Nonisotropic bodies and nonorthogonal reference frames, however, require an extension of the circuits given. The circuits for steady-state stress and small oscillation phenomena require only inductances and capacitors, while the circuits for transients require also standard (not ideal) transformers. A companion paper deals in detail with numerical and experimental methods to solve the equivalent circuits.

The Stroh formalism for two-dimensional elastostatics can be extended to elastodynamics when the problem is a steady state motion. Most of the identities in Chapters 6 and 7 remain applicable. The Barnett-Lothe tensors S, H, L now depend on the speed υ of the steady state motion. However S(υ), H(υ), L(υ) are no longer tensors because they do not obey the laws of tensor transformation when υ≠0. Depending on the problems the speed υ may not be prescribed arbitrarily. This is particularly the case for surface waves in a half-space where υ is the surface wave speed. The problem of the existence and uniqueness of a surface wave speed in anisotropic materials is the crux of surface wave theory. It is a subject that has been extensively studied since the pioneer work of Stroh (1962). Excellent expositions on surface waves for anisotropic elastic materials have been given by Farnell (1970), Chadwick and Smith (1977), Barnett and Lothe (1985), and more recently, by Chadwick (1989d).

AbstractWe have systematically made the numerical exploration about the perturbation extension of area-preserving mappings to three-dimensional ones, in which the fixed points of area preserving are elliptic, parabolic or hyperbolic respectively. It has been observed that: (i) the invariant manifolds in the vicinity of the fixed point generally don’t exist (ii) when the invariant curve of original two-dimensional mapping exists the invariant tubes do also in the neighbourhood of the invariant curve (iii) for the perturbation extension of area-preserving mapping the invariant manifolds can only be generated in the subset of the invariant manifolds of original two-dimensional mapping, (iv) for the perturbation extension of area preserving mappings with hyperbolic or parabolic fixed point the ordered region near and far from the invariant curve will be destroyed by perturbation more easily than the other one, This is a result different from the case with the elliptic fixed point. In the latter the ordered region near invariant curve is solid. Some of the results have been demonstrated exactly.Finally we have discussed the Kolmogorov Entropy of the mappings and studied some applications.

Inertial-range scaling laws for two- and three-dimensional turbulence are re-examined within a unified framework. A new correction to Kolmogorov's k−5/3 scaling is derived for the energy inertial range. A related modification is found to Kraichnan's logarithmically corrected two-dimensional enstrophy-range law that removes its unexpected divergence at the injection wavenumber. The significance of these corrections is illustrated with steady-state energy spectra from recent high-resolution closure computations. Implications for conventional numerical simulations are discussed. These results underscore the asymptotic nature of inertial-range scaling laws.

One of the interesting fields that attracted many researchers in recent years is the smart structures. The piezomaterials, because of their ability in converting both mechanical stress and electricity to each other, are very applicable in this field. However, most of the works available used various inexact two-dimensional theories with certain types of simplification, which are inaccurate in some applications such as thick shells while, in some applications due to request of large displacement/stress, thick piezoelectric panel is needed and two-dimensional theories have not enough accuracy. This study investigates the dynamic steady state response and natural frequency of a piezoelectric circular cylindrical panel using exact three-dimensional solutions based on this decomposition technique. In addition, the formulation is written for both simply supported and clamped boundary conditions. Then the natural frequencies, mode shapes, and dynamic steady state response of the piezoelectric circular cylindrical panel in frequency domain are validated with commercial finite element software (ABAQUS) to show the validity of the mathematical formulation and the results will be compared, finally.

The deformation, using linear poroelasticity, of a two-dimensional box of porous material due to fluid flow from a line source is considered as a model of certain filtration processes. Analytical solutions for the steady-state displacement, pressure, and fluid velocity are derived when the side walls of the filter have zero solid stress. A numerical solution for the case where the porous material adheres to the side walls is also found. It will be shown, however, that simpler approximate solutions can be derived which predict the majority of the deformation behavior of the filter.
