The present paper is based on an experimental study of a front-loaded very high lift, low pressure turbine blade designed at the VKI. The experiments have been carried out in a low-speed wind tunnel over a wide operating range of incidence and Reynolds number. The aim of the study is to characterize the flow through the cascade in terms of losses, mean outlet flow angle, and secondary flows. At low inlet freestream turbulence intensity, a laminar separation bubble is present, and a prediction model for a separated flow mode of transition has been developed.

The aim of the present paper is to analyze and discuss in detail the effects of the upstream incoming wakes on both the aerodynamic loading and the evolution of the laminar separation bubble developing along the suction side of the high-lift T106-C low pressure turbine blade at engine similar Reynolds and Mach numbers, but at a low free stream turbulence level. The investigation is carried out numerically by means of steady and unsteady RANS simulations for two different Reynolds numbers (100,000 and 140,000), employing the SST turbulence model coupled to the γ–Re~θt transition model. The numerical results are compared with the experimental data provided by the von Karman Institute in terms of variation of losses and blade loading between steady and unsteady inflow conditions. In general, the incoming wakes have a crucial effect both on the reduction of the separation bubble and on the modification of the blade loading. This is analyzed in detail, in order to separate these contributions.

The scope of this work is to perform a single-objective optimization of the high-lift and aft-loaded T2 low pressure turbine blade profile previously designed at the von Karman Institute for Fluid Dynamics (VKI). At correct engine Mach and Reynolds numbers and for a uniform inflow at low turbulence level, a laminar separation bubble occurs in the decelerating part of the suction side. The main goal of the optimization is to obtain a high-lift and aft-loaded blade characterized by lower aerodynamic losses with respect to the original profile. The optimization uses a metamodel-assisted Differential Evolution algorithm, with an Ordinary Kriging metamodel performing the low-fidelity evaluations and Numeca FINE/Turbo for the high-fidelity ones. The numerical results relative to the optimized profile are compared with those obtained for the baseline profile, in order to highlight the improvements on the blade aerodynamic performance coming from the optimization process.

Low pressure turbine airfoils of the present generation usually operate at subsonic conditions, with exit Mach numbers of about 0.6. To reduce the costs of experimental programs it can be convenient to carry out measurements in low speed tunnels in order to determine the cascades performance. Generally speaking, low speed tests are usually carried out on airfoils with modified shape, in order to compensate for the effects of compressibility. A scaling procedure for high-lift, low pressure turbine airfoils to be studied in low speed conditions is presented and discussed. The proposed procedure is based on the matching of a prescribed blade load distribution between the low speed airfoil and the actual one. Such a requirement is fulfilled via an Artificial Neural Network (ANN) methodology and a detailed parameterization of the airfoil. A RANS solver is used to guide the redesign process. The comparison between high and low speed profiles is carried out, over a wide range of Reynolds numbers, by using a novel three-equation, transition-sensitive, turbulence model. Such a model is based on the coupling of an additional transport equation for the so-called laminar kinetic energy (LKE) with the Wilcox k–ω model and it has proven to be effective for transitional, separated-flow configurations of high-lift cascade flows.

Based on detailed experimental work conducted at a low speed test facility, this paper describes the transition process in the presence of a separation bubble with low Reynolds number, low free-stream turbulence, and steady main flow conditions. A pressure distribution has been created on a long flat plate by means of a contoured wall opposite of the plate, matching the suction side of a modern low-pressure turbine aerofoil. The main flow conditions for four Reynolds numbers, based on suction surface length and nominal exit velocity, were varied from 80,000 to 300,000, which covers the typical range of flight conditions. Velocity profiles and the overall flow field were acquired in the boundary layer at several streamwise locations using hot-wire anemometry. The data given is in the form of contours for velocity, turbulence intensity, and turbulent intermittency. The results highlight the effects of Reynolds number, the mechanisms of separation, transition, and reattachment, which feature laminar separation-long bubble and laminar separation-short bubble modes. For each Reynolds number, the onset of transition, the transition length, and the general characteristics of separated flow are determined. These findings are compared to the measurement results found in the literature. Furthermore, the experimental data is compared with two categories of correlation functions also given in the literature: (1) correlations predicting the onset of transition and (2) correlations predicting the mode of separated flow transition. Moreover, it is shown that the type of instability involved corresponds to the inviscid Kelvin-Helmholtz instability mode at a dominant frequency that is in agreement with the typical ranges occurring in published studies of separated and free-shear layers.

This study investigates the aerodynamic performance of a low-pressure turbine, namely the T106C, by large eddy simulation (LES) and coarse grid direct numerical simulation (CDNS) at a Reynolds number of 100,000. Existing experimental data were used to validate the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) tool. The effects of subgrid scale (SGS) models, mesh densities, computational domains and boundary conditions on the CFD predictions are studied. On the blade suction surface, a separation zone starts at a location of about 55% along the suction surface. The prediction of flow separation on the turbine blade is always found to be difficult and is one of the focuses of this work. The ability of Smagorinsky and wall-adapting local eddy viscosity (WALE) model in predicting the flow separation is compared. WALE model produces better predictions than the Smagorinsky model. CDNS produces very similar predictions to WALE model. With a finer mesh, the difference due to SGS models becomes smaller. The size of the computational domain is also important. At blade midspan, three-dimensional (3D) features of the separated flow have an effect on the downstream flows, especially for the area near the reattachment. By further considering the effects of endwall secondary flows, a better prediction of the flow separation near the blade midspan can be achieved. The effect of the endwall secondary flow on the blade suction surface separation at the midspan is explained with the analytical method based on the Biot–Savart Law.

A detailed experimental analysis of the effects of the Reynolds number and free-stream turbulence intensity on the aerodynamic performance of a very high-lift, mid-loaded low-pressure turbine blade (T106C) is presented in this paper. The study was carried out on a large scale linear cascade in the VKI S1/C high-speed wind tunnel, operating at high exit Mach number (0.65) with a range of low Reynolds numbers (80,000–160,000) and three levels of free-stream turbulence intensity (0.8–3.2%). In the first part of the paper, the overall aerodynamic performance of the airfoil is presented, based on mid-span measurements performed by means of static pressure taps, hot-film sensors and a five-hole probe traversing downstream of the cascade. Some specific features of separated flow transition are also discussed for selected cases. The second part presents the analysis of the results in terms of correlations derived for the characteristic points of boundary layer separation and transition. A comparison with some previously published prediction models is shown. The large variety of boundary conditions provides a unique database for validating codes dealing with separated flow transition in turbomachinery.

This paper addresses the issue of aerodynamic performance of a novel 3D leading edge modification to a reference low pressure turbine blade. An analysis of tubercles found in nature and used in some engineering applications was employed to synthesize new leading edge geometry. A sinusoidal wave-like geometry characterized by wavelength and amplitude was used to modify the leading edge along the span of a 2D profile, rendering a 3D blade shape. The rationale behind using the sinusoidal leading edge was that they induce streamwise vortices at the leading edge which influence the separation behaviour downstream. Surface pressure and total pressure measurements were made in experiments on a cascade rig. These were complemented with computational fluid dynamics studies where flow visualization was also made from numerical results. The tests were carried out at low Reynolds number of 5.5 × 104 on a well-researched profile representative of conventional low pressure turbine profiles. The performance of the new 3D leading edge geometries was compared against the reference blade revealing a downstream shift in separated flow for the LE tubercle blades; however, total pressure loss reduction was not conclusively substantiated for the blade with leading edge tubercles when compared with the performance of the baseline blade. Factors contributing to the total pressure loss are discussed.
