Could Shock Tests Adequately Mimic Drop Test Conditions?

Drop tests are often substituted in qualification or life testing of microelectronic and optoelectronic products by shock tests. The existing (e.g., Telcordia) qualification specifications require that a short term load of the given magnitude and duration (say, an “external” acceleration with the maximum value of 500 g, acting for 0.001 s) is applied to the support structure of the product under test. The natural frequencies of vibration are not taken into account. The objective of our study is to develop simple analytical (“mathematical”) predictive models for the evaluation of the dynamic response of a structural element in a microelectronic or an optoelectronic product/package to an impact load occurring as a result of drop or shock tests. We use the developed models to find out if a shock tester could be “tuned” in such a way that the shock tests adequately mimic drop test conditions. We suggest that the maximum induced curvature and the maximum induced acceleration be used as suitable characteristics of the dynamic response of a structural element to an impact load. Indeed, the maximum curvatures determine the level of the bending stresses, and the maximum accelerations are supposedly responsible for the functional (electronic or photonic) performance of the product. We use the case of an elongated rectangular simply supported plate as an illustration of the suggested concept. We show that in order to adequately mimic drop test conditions, the shock test loading should be as close as possible to an instantaneous impulse, and that the duration of the shock load should be established based on the lowest (fundamental) natural frequency of vibrations. We show also that, for practical purposes, it is sufficient to consider the fundamental mode of vibrations only, and that the shock load does not have to be shorter than, say, half the quarter of the fundamental period. We demonstrate that, if the loading is not short enough, the induced curvatures and accelerations can exceed significantly the curvatures and accelerations in drop test conditions. Certainly, the results of such shock tests will be misleading. After the appropriate duration of the shock impulse is established, the time dependence and the maximum value of the imposed (“external”) acceleration in shock tests should be determined, depending on the most likely drop height, in order to adequately mimic drop test conditions. We demonstrate that the application of a probabilistic approach can be helpful in understanding the mechanical behavior and to ensure high short- and long-term reliability of an electronic or photonic device that might be or will be subjected to an accidental or expected impact loading. We conclude that although it is possible to “tune” the shock tester, so that the drop test conditions are adequately reproduced, actual drop tests should be conducted, whenever possible. The results of the analysis can be helpful in physical design and qualification testing of microelectronic and photonic products, experiencing dynamic loads of short duration.

The objective of this paper is to develop an analytical or mathematical predicative model for the evaluation of dynamic response of a structural element in a microelectronic or an optoelectronic product to an impact load occurring as a result of drop or shock test. Closed-form theoretical solution was obtained to simulate the board level drop test. The block diagram based SIMULINK analysis was introduced to determine the response with various impact configurations for the system level drop test as well. This study will help reliability engineers to design the impact input profiles and obtain the desired responses, and to calibrate and validate finite element analysis results quickly for both board level and system level drop test. It was found that time durations of the input profiles play an important role in the dynamic response. The system response can be designed by carefully choosing the impact time duration. Certain input pulse time results in the response with very low ringing after first or second peaks.

The aim of present paper is to experimentally investigate the dynamic strength characteristics of LNG cargo containment system under impact loads. A series of impact tests for full-scale MARK III insulation system is undertaken using a custom-built drop test facility as varying height and weight of the drop object. Based on a series of repeated drop tests, displacement recovery was measured for the assessment of damping characteristic of insulation system. Crack initiation was also measured during the cyclic drop test. The quantitative relationship between impact load and crack initiation as well as the crack propagation with respect to drop number are derived.

The published work on analytical ("mathematical") and computer-aided, primarily finite-element-analysis (FEA) based, predictive modeling of the dynamic response of electronic systems to shocks and vibrations is reviewed. While understanding the physics of and the ability to predict the response of an electronic structure to dynamic loading has been always of significant importance in military, avionic, aeronautic, automotive and maritime electronics, during the last decade this problem has become especially important also in commercial, and, particularly, in portable electronics in connection with accelerated testing of various surface mount technology (SMT) systems on the board level. The emphasis of the review is on the nonlinear shock-excited vibrations of flexible printed circuit boards (PCBs) experiencing shock loading applied to their support contours during drop tests. At the end of the review we provide, as a suitable and useful illustration, the exact solution to a highly nonlinear problem of the dynamic response of a "flexible-and-heavy" PCB to an impact load applied to its support contour during drop testing.

This paper aims to evaluate the structural strength of unreinforced concrete armor units (CAU), named Cubipod®, used on rubble-mound breakwaters and coastal structures, through a numerical methodology using the combined finite–discrete element method (FDEM). A numerical modeling methodology is developed to reproduce the results of an experimental examination published by Medina et al. (2011) of a free-fall drop test performed on a 15 t conventional Cubic block and a 16 t Cubipod® unit. The field results of the Cube drop tests were used to calibrate the model. The numerically simulated response to the Cubipod® test is then discussed in the context of a validation study. The calibration process and validation study provide insights into the sensitivity of breakage to tensile strength and collision angle, as well as a better understanding of the crushing and cracking damage of this unit under drop test impact conditions.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to present a novel retractable main landing gear for a light amphibious airplane, while the design, synthesis and analysis are given in details for constructing the main landing gear. Design/methodology/approach The constraint three-position synthesis has given the correct path of all linkages that suitably fit the landing gear into the compartment. The additional lock-link is introduced into the design to ensure the securement of the mechanism while landing. Having the telescopic gas-oil shock strut as a core element to absorb the impact load, it enhances the ability and efficiency to withstand higher impact than others type of light amphibious airplane. Findings By kinematics bifurcation analysis, the optimized value of the unlock spring stiffness at 90 N/m can be found to tremendously reduce the extended-retracted linear actuator force from 500 N to 150 N at the beginning of the retraction sequence. This could limit the size and weight of the landing gear actuator of the light amphibious airplane. Practical implications The drop test of the landing gear to comply with the ASTM f-2245 (Standard Specification for Design and Performance of a Light Sport Airplane) reveals that the novel landing gear can withstand the impact load at the drop height determined by the standard. The maximum impact loading 4.8 G occurs at the drop height of 300 mm, and there is no sign of any detrimental or failure of the landing gear or the structure of the light amphibious airplane. The impact settling time response reaches the 2% of steady-state value in approximately 1.2 s that ensure the safety and stability of the amphibious airplane if it subjects to an accidentally hard landing. Originality/value This paper presents unique applications of a retractable main landing gear of a light amphibious airplane. The proposed landing gear functions properly and complies with the drop test standard, ensuring the safety and reliability of the airplane and exploiting the airworthiness certification process.
